WATCH: Eric Allen's Hall of Fame enshrinement speech
Eric Allen was the epitome of a shutdown cornerback during his time with the Eagles, and the accolades for his hard work are close to being realized. The former Eagles cornerback was initially named one of the 15 finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's 2025 class.
It was the first time Allen had reached this point in the voting process.
After years of waiting, Allen was one of four players elected into the 2025 class and properly enshrined into immortality with Sterling Sharpe, Jared Allen, and Antonio Gates.
The former Eagles cornerback was third on the list and let out a 'Fly Eagles Fly' to kick off his five-minute speech.
A key member of the Eagles' No. 1-ranked and famed Gang Green defense, Allen spent seven seasons with the Eagles. He was named to the Pro Bowl five times and was an All-Pro once, after the 1989 season, when he finished second in the NFL with eight interceptions.
Allen was inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame in 2011.

Colts planning to keep top 2 QBs on the bench for preseason finale
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis Colts coach Shane Steichen said Thursday he does not intend to play either of his top two quarterbacks, Daniel Jones or Anthony Richardson, in Saturday's preseason finale at Cincinnati. Steichen also does not intend to play many starters. The announcement comes two days after Steichen said Jones will be the starting quarterback for Indy's Sept. 7 season opener against the Miami Dolphins. 'I think he's one play away from going into an actual game and don't want to take the risk there in that situation,' Steichen said when asked about Richardson. 'We've got a lot of our threes and fours playing in this game.' NFL coaches generally don't play starters in the final preseason game, which is why Jones will sit out. Richardson also has been susceptible to injuries, starting only 15 of 34 games in his first two NFL seasons after being selected fourth overall in the 2023 draft. He also was benched for two games last season after pulling himself out of a game because he was tired. Steichen also announced four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Xavien Howard will not play Saturday. Indy signed Howard on Monday. Howard did not play in the league last season, but worked with Indy's new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo his first two seasons with the Dolphins. ___

Rob Gronkowski says he will sign a one-day contract to retire (again) as a Patriot
Rob Gronkowski first retired from the NFL in 2019 as a member of the New England Patriots. The future Hall of Fame tight end retired again in 2022 as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And even though he hasn't played in the league since then, it appears that Gronk will retire one more time, again as a member of the Patriots. The idea of Gronkowski signing a ceremonial one-day contract with the team that he helped win three Super Bowls was floated publicly Tuesday by Susan Hurley, the founder and president of the CharityTeams fundraising firm for nonprofits. Hurley was speaking at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly built 'Gronk Playground' on the Charles River Esplanade in Boston when she threw in a personal plea toward Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who was sitting behind Hurley next to Gronkowski. 'Can we just make it official and sign [Gronkowski] for a day so he can retire as a Patriot?' Hurley asked before looking in Kraft's direction and adding, 'What do you say?' Gronkowski applauded and nodded while looking in Kraft's direction. The owner, who was off camera at the time, apparently gave his approval, as Gronkowski later confirmed to reporters. '[Kraft] gave her a thumbs up, so we're going to make it happen in the future and it's gonna be a special moment,' the five-time Pro Bowl selection said. 'Come back for a day, a weekend, whatever it is. So we'll make it happen and it will be a really, really cool moment. It's gonna happen, we just don't know when.' The Patriots have not announced such a move and did not respond immediately on Thursday to The Times' request to comment. On Wednesday, a somewhat less official announcement came on the Instagram account of the 'Dudes on Dudes' podcast hosted by Gronkowski and former Patriots teammate Julian Edelmen. 'Gronk will sign a one day contract and retire a New England Patriot,' read the post that was accompanied by a video that featured Gronkowski speaking on the podcast about being drafted by the Patriots. The video doesn't mention anything about him signing a one-day contract with the team, but it does feature a graphic that reads: 'Breaking — Gronk will retire a New England Patriot.' New England selected Gronkowski in the second round of the 2010 draft. He became a key and beloved member of the team's dynasty under coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady. After Brady left for Tampa Bay before the 2020 season, Gronkowski came out of retirement to join him and ended up winning his fourth career Super Bowl that year.

Jets make trade for Phillips official and place Weaver on season-ending IR, cut Mathis
The New York Jets placed defensive lineman Rashad Weaver on season-ending injured reserve and released defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis on Thursday, when their acquisition of nose tackle Harrison Phillips became official. Phillips played the past three seasons for Minnesota after spending his first four with Buffalo. The Jets and Vikings agreed to a trade Wednesday night, pending Phillips passing his physical. New York also acquired a 2027 seventh-round draft pick from Minnesota, which received sixth-rounders in 2026 and 2027. That move came a few hours after the Jets made another addition to their defensive line when they acquired defensive tackle Jowon Briggs and a seventh-rounder next year from Cleveland for a sixth-rounder. The Jets also waived cornerback Ryan 'Bump' Cooper with an injury designation. He was claimed off waivers from Miami last month. Weaver was signed as a free agent by the Jets in March and expected to be part of New York's defensive line rotation. The nature of Weaver's injury was not immediately known and it wasn't clear when it occurred. Weaver, who has 5 1/2 career sacks and 15 quarterback hits in four NFL seasons, was waived by Tennessee last summer after being a fourth-rounder out of Pitt in 2021. He signed with Houston's practice squad and played in three games for the Texans before being waived and finishing last season on the Los Angeles Rams' practice squad. Mathis was claimed by the Jets off waivers from Washington last December. He was a second-round pick of the Commanders out of Alabama in 2022. Mathis has 25 total tackles in 23 games over three NFL seasons. The 6-foot-3, 307-pound Phillips started every game during his tenure with Minnesota and provides a veteran presence next to Pro Bowl defensive tackle Quinnen Williams. A third-round pick out of Stanford in 2018, Phillips has eight career sacks, five fumble recoveries and is regarded as a top run stuffer. He signed a three-year, $19.5 million contract with the Vikings in 2022 and then was signed to a two-year extension in September. 'Harrison has meant so much to our team and our locker room since his arrival in Minnesota three years ago," Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell said in a statement in the team's release announcing the trade. 'He brought leadership, professionalism and consistency, helping set a standard for the culture we wanted to create.' ___
