Nikhil Dwivedi Calls Mani Ratnam's Raavan 'Bizarre': 'Film Did Nothing For Me'

Actor Nikhil Dwivedi has called Mani Ratnam's Raavan a 'badly-made film,' criticizing its 'bizarre storytelling' and underutilization of Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai.
Actor-producer Nikhil Dwivedi has offered a candid reflection on his experience working in Mani Ratnam's ambitious 2010 film Raavan. Featuring Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, and Vikram in pivotal roles, the film reimagined the Ramayana in a contemporary setting. While hailed for its visual grandeur, it divided audiences and critics alike. More than a decade later, Dwivedi has spoken openly about why the film didn't resonate with him.
In a conversation with DNA, Nikhil did not mince words. He admitted that while some viewers appreciated the film, he found it to be a 'very badly-made film" that left no impact on his career or his personal journey as an actor. 'Aap unn kam logo mein se hai jinhe woh film pasand aayi. Mere hisaab se bahut kharab film bani thi. Mujhe aisa lagata hai. It's good ki aapko achi lagi, but the film did nothing for me," he said, clarifying that his perspective was that of an audience member, not just an insider.
Dwivedi acknowledged that Mani Ratnam's Raavan was visually breathtaking and one of the most aesthetically beautiful films he had ever seen. However, he felt the storytelling was confusing and ultimately failed to connect. 'I didn't mean as an actor, but as an audience, I think it was not a well-made film. It was a beautiful-looking film. Aesthetically, it was one of the finest films. But I think all the actors were wasted, and you just couldn't understand what the film was all about. The storytelling was very faulty. It was a bizarre form of storytelling," he added.
The actor further questioned the creative decision to reinterpret an age-old epic. While reiterating that every filmmaker has the freedom to reimagine classics, he wondered why one would alter stories that have survived centuries. 'Sometimes I feel filmmakers try to outsmart something that doesn't need improvement. What Valmiki and Tulsidas wrote has endured because it was complete in itself. To change that just for the sake of experimentation doesn't always work," he said.
Despite his sharp criticism, Dwivedi did not dismiss Mani Ratnam's vision or effort. He acknowledged that the filmmaker poured his heart into Raavan and that the film's experimental approach, while bold, simply didn't succeed. 'Maybe they were trying to experiment, but that clearly didn't work. That happens in art. Sometimes experiments succeed, sometimes they don't," he remarked.
Released in 2010, Raavan cast Abhishek Bachchan as Beera (inspired by Raavan), Aishwarya Rai as Ragini (a Sita-like figure), and Vikram as Dev Pratap (modeled on Rama). The story explored unconventional bonds and moral ambiguities, a departure from the traditional telling of the epic. However, despite its ambition and scale, the film struggled at the box office and remains one of Ratnam's most polarizing works.

Amitabh Bachchan is beaming with pride after his son Abhishek Bachchan bagged the Best Actor award for I Want To Talk at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IIFM) 2025. The megastar took to his blog to share a heartfelt note along with pictures of Abhishek, calling himself 'the happiest father in the entire universe'. He wrote, 'Abhishek, you are the pride and honour of the family. You fly the flag that Dadaji established and have carried it with valour and hard work. Consistency, never giving in, and an attitude of: no matter how much you bring me down, I will rise again with my effort — and stand even taller. It took time, but you never gave up. You showed the world your strength. At Melbourne, they declared you the Best Actor. There can be no greater gift for a father.' He concluded his note with a powerful message: 'Winning is the ultimate answer to many binding ropes and chains. The price of victory is high, but so are the rewards. You, Abhishek, have proved that. Stay quiet and flow at your own wish. With all my love — a very proud father and family.' Apart from Abhishek Bachchan, the festival honoured Geetha Kailasam with the Best Actress award, Jaideep Ahlawat with the Best Actor (Series) award for Paatal Lok 2, and Nimisha Sajayan with the Best Actress (Series) award for Dabba Cartel. Neeraj Ghaywan's Homebound won both Best Film and Best Director, while Aamir Khan was presented with the Excellence in Cinema award. Hegemony by the water's edge

The prose is decidedly unsentimental. Yet, typical of this writer, lyrical; the reader absorbs the family saga silently, moved beyond words. The dammed-up sentiment breaks through once in a while, in the telling of the life and times of Ammu, the strong woman who holds home and family together. She plays the market in Hong Kong, and after the same markets crash, picks herself and the pieces up and moves on. Ammu, who becomes somewhat inured to managing everything by herself, grows a stoic exterior, learns to cope when her journalist husband has them moving cities, (Hong Kong, NYC, Bombay, Bangalore) countries and jobs, when he goes to jail (thus acquiring in the words of the narrator notoriety, fame and unemployability, all at once), and when he eventually retreats into silence. She knows what it takes time for the other members of her family to realise: that when an Elsewherean fetches up in a new place, there's no sense of belonging or welcome. George is looked at through a lens devoid of sentiment, described as a man with a grand idea of himself. The legendary journalist, known to readers across India and Southeast Asia for decades now, is a keen observer of people, places and practices. He is prone to quoting from the Hindu scriptures (he has an interesting take on travel in the Ramay ana), and at one point, his brother-in-law wonders if George is also a communist…which would make him a Hindu Christian Communist! George turns that old saying 'water finds its level' on its head; his take is, 'a river cannot rise above its source.' The story Jeet Thayil tells is an engaging one, despite the laconic tone of its telling. The Hong Kong chapter, where George sets up Asiaweek, is interesting; the Vietnam one, where the author goes tracking some personal history, is even more interesting. The Germany account, wherein the author tells Germans about their own George Grosz and Otto Dix, and eventually gets a black eye, is rather esoteric, while the China chapter, where the author gets a lesson on slavery Indian style, is both frank and funny. In Paris, the author searches for and finds Baudelaire's tomb as a sort of tribute to his uncle, who was obsessed with the poet. In Bangalore, we hear the gardener Govindappa's story of his travels during the pandemic. And in the end, everything loops back to the Muvattupuzha River, the river of three rivers.
