Using Kookaburra ball makes no sense
Yorkshire coach Anthony McGrath has described the decision to use Kookaburra balls during this week's County Championship fixtures as "nonsensical".McGrath watched Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire play out a draw at Trent Bridge during which just 21 wickets fell.Seven of the nine matches ended in draws, with only Surrey and Northants picking up victories.McGrath said asking county players to use the less responsive Kookaburra to better prepare England players for the Ashes this winter, while Ben Stokes' side tackle India with a Dukes ball this summer, made no sense. "The match as a whole was not a great watch for spectators with the Kookaburra ball and I'm still not sure why we are using it, to be honest," the 49-year-old said."We don't play Test cricket in England with a Kookaburra and if we are thinking about the next series in Australia playing with a Kookaburra, then the people who are going to play in that series probably need to be using a Kookaburra ball as well."The directive, enthusiastically embraced by director of England cricket Rob Key, was originally brought in to encourage County Championship bowlers to 'upskill' after successive Ashes disappointments with the Kookaburra ball.It was initially seen in 2023 for a two game mid-season trial and repeated last summer with a two game early and late season trial.Critics feel the move penalises seamers, which form the bulk of county sides, and reduces the likelihood of results. A total of 17 out of 18 early season games with a Kookaburra in 2024 were draws.Former Yorkshire coach Ottis Gibson called it "a nonsense" last season and Surrey's then director of cricket Alec Stewart said it was "the worst decision ever"."If you're wanting people to bowl 90mph on the back of seven first-class games, then eight T20s... and you slot it in during a Test series, in the most jam-packed part of the season with not many England players around, it is nonsensical," McGrath added.

Wrexham take centre stage as Championship floods Boxing Day in Premier League's absence
The English Football League will stage a full Boxing Day programme following the Premier League's decision not to schedule games on the traditional festive date. Wrexham will take centre stage on the December 26 bank holiday when they host Sheffield United in the EFL Championship. All 72 EFL fixtures across both days will be televised live for the second successive season. Birmingham and Ipswich kick off the new campaign on August 8 with a Friday night game under the St Andrew's lights. Two divisions separated the clubs last term as Birmingham won the League One title and Ipswich were relegated after just one season in the Premier League. The season-opener pits ex-NFL quarterback Tom Brady against singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, the two men being respective minority owners of Birmingham and Ipswich. Birmingham's start before the September international break also includes trips to Blackburn and Leicester and a visit from Oxford, while their so-called 'Hollywood derbies' with Wrexham are away on October 4 and at home on April 11. Wrexham, under the ownership of Hollywood A-lister Ryan Reynolds and fellow actor Rob McElhenney, begin at Southampton, which will be Will Still's first match as manager at St Mary's, on Saturday, August 9 with a 12.30pm kick-off. Back in the second tier of English football for the first time in 43 years after winning three successive promotions, Wrexham follow their opener at St Mary's with home games against West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday and a trip to Millwall. Sheffield United and Bristol City start at Bramall Lane on August 9 in a repeat of last season's Championship play-off semi-final, West Brom host Blackburn and promoted Charlton welcome Watford to The Valley. Frank Lampard's Coventry start at home to Hull, Stoke entertain Derby, Oxford play Portsmouth and Liam Manning's first game in charge of Norwich will be at home to Millwall. New Middlesbrough manager Rob Edwards also opens at home against Swansea and Julien Stephan's first game at QPR is a visit from Preston. Relegated Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday are the last two teams in action on the opening weekend, with a 4.30pm kick-off on Sunday, August 10. Leicester's first away game is at Preston and the second weekend of action sees Ipswich and Southampton, both back in the second tier after relegation, meet at Portman Road. The Sheffield derbies take place on November 22 at Hillsborough and at Bramall Lane on February 21. The Championship season will consist of 33 weekend rounds, nine midweek rounds and four bank holiday rounds, finishing on Saturday, May 2, 2026. Boxing Day highlights include Birmingham at home to Derby, Leicester entertaining Watford and Norwich hosting Charlton. Leicester travel to Sheffield United on New Year's Day, with Southampton at home to Millwall and Swansea greeting West Brom. League One and League Two starts a week earlier than the Championship, with relegated Luton and promoted AFC Wimbledon getting things under way at Kenilworth Road on Friday, August 1 at 8pm. Cardiff and Plymouth start out with home games the next day after dropping into League One, against Peterborough and Barnsley respectively. Promoted pair Bradford and Doncaster are at home to Wycombe and Exeter, while Port Vale mark their return to the division away to Rotherham. Barnet and Oldham are back in the EFL after winning promotion from the Vanarama National League. The Bees open their League Two campaign at home to Fleetwood on Saturday, August 2, while Oldham make the trip to MK Dons. Salford, now owned by a new consortium which includes Sir David Beckham and Gary Neville, have a home opener against Crewe.

England make Jofra Archer decision for second Test against India after fast bowler returned to red ball cricket for Sussex
Jofra Archer has been added to England's Test squad to face India next week. Archer, 30, has not played a Test match for more than four years but returned to first-class action with Sussex at Durham earlier this week. The 2019 World Cup winner got through 18 overs in the only innings in which Sussex bowled, but England's selectors clearly saw enough to merit a recall. He joins the 14-man squad selected for the first Test victory over India at Headingley, which Ben Stokes ' team won by five wickets. Archer took the most recent of his 42 Test wickets in his 13th appearance, dismissing now India captain Shubman Gill in a 10-wicket defeat in Ahmedabad in February 2021. His preparation for Edgbaston next week involved getting Durham batsmen ducking and weaving on a sluggish Chester-le-Street pitch, returning figures of one for 32 in the process. However, his Sussex coach Paul Farbrace claimed England should resist the temptation to fast track one of their genuine 90-mile-per-hour bowlers. 'The conversation we had was that he would come and play in this game and then he'd be assessed at the end of this game,' said Farbrace, formerly England's assistant coach. 'If I was in their situation my honest answer would be that I wouldn't pick Jofra for the next Test match. I would save him for the third Test match. 'I'd pick the same team for the next game and bring Jofra back into the third game of the series. That's how I would manage him but I'm no longer involved in that. If they choose to ask my opinion that would be my view.' Archer's inclusion increases England's options for the second of five Tests in seven weeks. Chris Woakes looked off-colour in Leeds, returning his second worst match figures in a home Test, but has great knowledge of Edgbaston, his county home with Warwickshire. Brydon Carse improved in the second innings at Headingley and although Josh Tongue was ineffective for periods, his ability to wipe out the tail - taking three wickets in 10 balls in the first innings and three in four in the second - has provided England's attack with another dimension. England also have Essex seamer Sam Cook and Surrey all-rounder Jamie Overton as bowling options in their squad.
