Watch Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts Play a Majestic, 14-Minute ‘Cortez the Killer'
Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts are three shows into their Love Earth world tour, and they've already settled into a solid setlist that mixes classics ('Cinnamon Girl,' 'Like a Hurricane,' 'The Needle and the Damage Done') with oddball deep cuts ('Sun Green,' 'Looking Forward,' 'Name of Love'), and doesn't vary much from night to night.
But every show so far has opened with a different solo acoustic song — 'Sugar Mountain' in Sweden, 'Heart of Gold' in Norway, 'Comes a Time' in Denmark' — and wrapped up with a unique encore. Sweden closed out with 'Rockin' in the Free World,' Norway got 'Cortez the Killer,' and Denmark saw a double shot of 'Down by the River' and 'Rockin' in the Free World.'

A fan perched near the stage captured 'Cortez the Killer' in Norway, and it is simply majestic. Young doesn't sing a note for nearly five minutes as the intro of the song slowly swells. The performance stretches out for a stunning 14 minutes. That's a good three minutes longer than the renditions that opened up every show of Young's 2024 tour with Crazy Horse. (The record, however, was set at a Rotterdam show back in 2001 when the song went on for 22 minutes.)
In Norway, Young included the lost verse of 'Cortez the Killer' that nobody heard until last year. The verse had been rumored for decades, but wasn't confirmed until Young did a Zoom with paid members of the Neil Young Archives, and said he recently stumbled upon his original lyrics. They were unveiled to the public on the opening night of the Crazy Horse tour in April 2024.
'I floated on the water,' Young sang. 'I ate that ocean wave/Two weeks after the slaughter/I was living in a cave/They came too late to get me/But there's no one here to set me free/From this rocky grave/To that snowed-out ocean wave.'
'Down by the River' in Denmark topped out at a relatively brief nine minutes, as opposed to the 24-minute one from Dresden, Germany, in 2014, and was also filmed by a fan. Check out the footage right here along with 'Rockin' in the Free World.'
After the show in Sweden, Young wrote up a travel log on his website. 'We are now on the highway to Bergen,' he wrote, 'a winding beauty, passing giant rock formations and verdant trees and growth, incredible waterways with rapids opening onto large lakes. Old buildings in wonderful condition on the banks. Snow capped mountain peaks above. Tunnels up to 26 kilometers in length, carved through rock. Natural rock for 26 kilometers! I am in awe of the beautify and power of these projects. These Norwegians are an awesome building people.'
The tour continues June 26 at Malahide Castle in Dublin, Ireland. And on June 28, it hits the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury in England. A North American leg begins Aug. 8 at PNC Music Pavilion Charlotte, North Carolina. It wraps up September at Farm Aid in Minneapolis Minnesota.
At some point, Young will likely play at least one song from his brand new album, Talkin' to the Trees. But at this point, he hasn't done anything written since 2003.

"Just short of an hour after they arrived, they kissed in front of loads of other people and didn't seem to care who was watching," the source explained. The witness noted that Styles and his love interest "appeared to have known each other for a while" because of how familiar they acted with one another. Although the identity of Styles' lady friend remains unknown, the chemistry she shared with the 31-year-old was undeniable, says a witness. "Harry only had eyes for this woman, and sparks were flying as soon as they were together," The Sun reports. A video of the heated PDA session has since gone viral, and as expected, fans have the most to say. Some pointed out that the mystery woman bears a resemblance to his former flames. "He has a type," one fan observed, while another added, "She has curly hair. Black girls, we [are] up!" This user shared a similar sentiment, writing, "Once he went Black. He never came back." Others went as far as to guess the woman's identity as British singer Olivia Dean, who performed earlier at the Glastonbury Festival. "Is that Olivia Dean, or am I tripping? asked this user on X. Another fan then replied, "That is what I think too. Not the first festival they have been seen at together." Harry Styles' Glastonbury date is the first woman he has been majorly linked to since his breakup from Russell in May 2024. Instagram Improves Spotify Music Sharing Options in Stories

Instagram's rolling out the ability to actually listen to a preview of a song that you've shared from Spotify in IG Stories, as opposed to just providing a Spotify link, further refining its music engagement elements. So now, when you share a Spotify music sticker within your IG Stories, viewers will be able to listen to it in-stream. Up till now, you've been able to share Spotify music stickers, but that only provided a link back to the Spotify track. The updated sticker now also includes audio, which is a big improvement. Yet, at the same time, functionally, it's not really new, as you've been able to post music in Stories since forever. But you haven't been able to combine Spotify song sharing within Stories in the same way, to it builds on that functionality. Though you have been able to share songs to your Stories via 'Add Yours' music stickers, while you can also now share songs from Spotify to your IG Notes, a feature that Instagram added last month. And now, you can also share what you're listening to on Spotify direct to Stories as well, adding another music engagement option in the app. WhatsApp added the same for its version of Stories, in WhatsApp Status, last month. The option adds another means to counter the rising influence of TikTok, and potentially replace TikTok's presence in this respect, if TikTok ever ends up getting banned in the U.S. TikTok has become a key platform for music promotion, with music publishers now focusing on the app as an essential connector, with some even changing their artists' song names to better align with TikTok trends. But if TikTok goes bye-bye, as a result of the 'Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act,' then all that music engagement will have to go elsewhere, and IG seems to be setting itself up as the best alternative in this respect. Though YouTube is also adding music features to tap into the same opportunity, and with TikTok continuing to get extensions from Trump, it doesn't look like it's going anywhere either way. But still, it's another music engagement option, which will provide more ways for IG users to share their favorite tracks. Benmont Tench Shines During Poignant ‘The Melancholy Season' Solo Set

Thursday, May 15, 2025 in Chicago, IL Encountering Tom Petty in Gainesville, Florida for the first time at the age of just 11, Benmont Tench would become a crucial component in the sound of one of America's great songwriters, tickling the ivories on two Mudcrutch records, all 13 Heartbreakers studio albums and two of Petty's three solo projects, a run responsible for record sales exceeding 80 million globally over 45 years (one of the best selling catalogs ever). While his work as a session musician has found him appearing on songs by artists like Stevie Nicks, Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Johnny Cash and the Rolling Stones since 1981, it would take until 2014 for his first proper solo album You Should Be So Lucky. Following it up more than a decade later, Tench released The Melancholy Season this past March, a collection of 12 tracks which finds him plying his remarkable craft alongside guests like Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), longtime collaborator Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek) and more, resuming a U.S. tour in support of the new album September 13, 2025 in Woodstock, New York. In the studio, Tench took on the lead vocal to the piano-driven 'Welcome to Hell' on the second Mudcrutch album, delivering it with a bit of a ragtime vibe on stage in Chicago. 'What the hell, a couple of covers,' said Tench with a smile. 'I like this guy. He was a good songwriter,' he continued dryly with a wink and a nod, setting up a solo take on Petty's 'Straight Into Darkness,' from 1982's Long After Dark. Midway through the tour, Tench shook up the setlist, explaining the process behind 'Wobbles,' which grew from an instrumental in 2014 to a song with lyrics on the new album, steering deftly into 'You Should Be So Lucky.' Tench, 71, has battled cancer for nearly fifteen years. On stage in Chicago, he explained to fans that he recently had part of his tongue removed, persevering despite the vocal hurdles that process has brought. 'I said I'm tongue tied and I am. A funny thing happened on the way to Chicago,' Tench began. 'I've had this since 2011 and it really hadn't gotten in my way,' he continued. 'So, I go in and they take out my jaw. And they take out a little bit more of my tongue. And they rebuild half of my jaw. Damn. Bob's your uncle!' joked Tench despite the circumstances. 'This song is about not hating people - even if they're hateful,' he said, explaining the message behind 'I Will Not Follow You Down' from The Melancholy Season. 'Save your tears. You're gonna need them,' sang Tench during the new song's anthemic chorus, one of the evening's standout moments. Cruising toward close with The Velvet Underground's 'Rock & Roll,' Tench emerged from encore to put his spin on one of Petty's most cherished recorded moments. By slowing it down, Tench shined a spotlight directly on the narrative that drives 'American Girl,' putting forth a stirring, unexpectedly beautiful rendition of arguably Petty's most recognizable songwriting. 'I love this city - you all should know that by now,' said Benmont Tench on stage in Chicago. 'Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you so much.'
