Heavy rains catch Hyderabad off guard on holiday
The downpour arrived just as families and children were out enjoying the Independence Day holiday, with many visitors from other districts at popular city spots. At Necklace Road and Tank Bund, where crowds had gathered, people rushed for shelter as sudden showers disrupted evening plans. Low visibility was reported along the Miyapur–Lingampally stretch.
For nearly an hour, heavy rain lashed several areas, though lighter-than-usual traffic in the IT Corridor meant little disruption on the roads — a rare sight during such weather.
By 11 pm, Kukatpally 6.58 cm and Quthbullapur 6 cm, followed by Shapur Nagar at 4.8 cm. Pulkal in Sangareddy district reported a whopping 11.6 cm, the highest in the state, followed by Narayankhed in Medak at 7.6 cm and Kagazmaddur at 7.3 cm.
One resident summed up the mood on X: 'For the past three days, there was a heavy rain alert for Hyderabad, but we didn't see a drop. Today, when clouds formed and there was no alert, it poured.'
The sudden burst also highlighted Hyderabad's dramatic monsoon turnaround. On July 15, with a 57% rainfall deficit, residents feared a failed season. Cut to August 15 — the city now has a +30% surplus, most lakes are full, the Musi river carried floodwaters for two days and twin reservoirs are near Full Reservoir Level.

War 2 box office collection Day 3: Despite Coolie storm, Hrithik & Jr NTR touch ₹150 crore mark; beats Salman's Sikandar
War 2 Box Office Collection Day 3: Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR's much-awaited War 2 had a shaky start but has since gained pace at the box office. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, and part of YRF's larger spy universe, the film opened strong on Day 1 with ₹52 crore on Thursday, August 14, just ahead of the Independence Day weekend. But the clash with Rajinikanth and Nagarjuna's Coolie, which stormed past ₹300 crore in only three days, made the battle tougher. For War 2, Day 2 saw a boost from the holiday, bringing in ₹57.35 crore, but Day 3 trends show the numbers dipping once again. Also read: War 2 box office collection worldwide Day 2: Hrithik Roshan reclaims territory, Jr NTR's contribution declines as film passes Rs 100 crore mark on Independence Day According to Box Office Tracker Sacnilk, by the end of Day 2, War 2 had earned ₹109.35 crore net in India. On Day 3 (Saturday), the movie managed to pull in just ₹33 crore (all languages), which took the three-day India total to ₹142.35 crore net. (This is an early estimate for Saturday, and by the end of the day, it would have already crossed the ₹150 crore mark.) Despite the drop, the film has already gone past the lifetime earnings of Salman Khan's Sikandar (₹110 crore in India). The worldwide earnings of the movie on day 2 stood at 38 cr Net. (168 Cr worldwide in 2 days). Also read: Coolie box office collection Day 3: Rajinikanth starrer becomes fastest Tamil film to earn ₹300 crore worldwide, beats Vettaiyan and Mohanlal's Empuraan on opening weekend The Hindi version is leading, but Jr NTR's presence has also boosted business in the Telugu states, where the film earned over ₹35 crore in the first three days. Despite facing Coolie, which surpassed the ₹150 crore nationwide mark on Day 3, Tamil collections were also steady, with overall occupancies on Day 3 better than Hindi. Globally, the film has crossed ₹200 crore gross by Saturday, though overseas numbers are decent rather than record-breaking. War 2 clocked an overall Hindi occupancy of 31.42% on Saturday, August 16, 2025, weaker than Day 2. Tamil: 49% average on Day 3, Telugu: 42% average on Day 3. Sacnilk reported stronger occupancies in Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru, while northern cities like Delhi and Mumbai lagged. The film features Kiara Advani in the lead, Ashutosh Rana in supporting parts, and Anil Kapoor in a key role. Despite falling short of YRF spy universe benchmarks set by SRK's Pathaan and Salman's Tiger, War 2 is still faring better than many recent Bollywood flops. On Saturday, Hrithik and Jr NTR thanked fans on social media. Hrithik said watching celebrations in theatres made his heart 'fuller,' while Jr NTR called the audience's love 'incredible.' War 2's big competition is Rajinikanth's Coolie, which was released in the same window. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie is celebrating 50 years of Rajinikanth in cinema. Along with Rajinikanth, the film features Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, and cameos from Aamir Khan and Pooja Hegde. Coolie has already taken the lead in the box office clash. By Day 3, it earned ₹158.25 crore in India and ₹320-325 crore worldwide, compared to War 2's ₹142.35 crore in India. On Saturday, Coolie collected ₹38.50 crore, a much bigger number compared to War 2's ₹33 crore.

Punjab CM: Cops to get ₹1.2 lakh for 1-kg heroin seizure from next year

During his Independence Day speech in Faridkot, he said, 'It has been decided that from March 1, 2026, the police personnel recovering 1-kg heroin will get a cash reward of ₹1.2 lakh.' Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann (PTI file) Asserting that Pakistan has been the source of the drugs reaching the state, he said the government has demolished houses built using drug money, jailed smugglers and curbed the open sale of drugs. Omar Abdullah's signature campaign draws flak
The launch of a signature campaign for statehood restoration by J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah has drawn sharp criticism from leaders of various political parties terming it as shameful. The launch of a signature campaign for statehood restoration by J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah has drawn sharp criticism from leaders of various political parties terming it as shameful. (ANI File) In his Independence Day speech at Bakshi Stadium on Friday, Omar said that he is going to launch a signature campaign across J&K for statehood restoration and will reach every house and village of UT. 'In the next 8 weeks, we will reach out to all 90 assembly constituencies of Jammu and Kashmir, gathering signatures from the people in support of the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. We will not rest until our rights are restored. We cannot be denied equality,' Omar Abdullah said while two former CMs Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti were in audience along with over a dozen legislators. The PDP criticised Omar Abdullah's signature campaign. 'Omar Abdullah owes an apology not a signature campaign for normalising 5th August. With 50 MLAs behind him, he has reduced the fight for J&K's statehood to token gestures, after seeking votes door-to-door on the promise of restoring pre–5th August status. This is not just retreat, it is betrayal. The people gave him a historic mandate to fight for Article 370 and statehood, not to stage political theatre. If he has already surrendered, he must admit it and apologise to every citizen of J&K for selling promises he never intended to keep,' PDP legislative party leader Waheed ur Rehman Para wrote on X. People's Conference chairman Sajjad Lone said he supports statehood but the said signature campaign has no legal value. 'I beg you. Please stop this childish and immature attitude. We will support any campaign unconditionally. But please ensure that a resolution from the state assembly is also passed and sent to the Supreme Court,' he said. Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) chief spokesperson Inam Un Nabi called the move 'a shameful confession of political irrelevance and utter failure'. 'Omar had a golden opportunity to fight for the rights of the people when the NC got a full mandate to represent the aspirations of Kashmiris, especially on Article 370 and statehood. Instead of pursuing these goals with conviction, NC has chosen the path of surrender and soft obedience towards the BJP. This signature campaign is nothing but a diversion from their betrayal,' he said. He termed Omar's statement a classic case of 'political theatre', noting that the NC's past performance in power and their silence during the critical years post-August 5, 2019, speaks volumes about their priorities. 'If Omar truly had the will, he would have mobilised legislators including that of oppositions , taken legal and constitutional routes and built a national-level consensus for the restoration of rights. Instead, he's now going door-to-door collecting signatures, as if Kashmir's dignity can be traded with a petition paper,' he said.
