Crowd disorder at CHAN raises concerns in Kenya

BBC News11-08-2025
Ticket sales for some African Nations Championship (CHAN) matches in Nairobi have been suspended after chaotic scenes overshadowed Kenya's victory over Morocco on Sunday. The Harambee Stars produced a shock by beating the pre-tournament favourites 1-0 at a packed Kasarani Stadium, yet the result was marred by disorder both inside and outside the venue before and during the match. The security breaches included a broken gate, fans entering without tickets, overcrowding beyond the 48,063 capacity and the invasion of areas reserved for media. Some fans who were trying to access the stadium from a lower gate have accused the police of using tear gas.Mookh Africa, CHAN's ticketing service provider in Kenya, confirmed to BBC Sport Africa that sales for upcoming fixtures at the stadium, officially known as the Moi International Sports Centre, have been halted until organisers issue further instructions. The disciplinary and safety committees of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) have launched investigations but a spokesperson for the continental game's governing body denied that it had taken the decision to suspend sales."Caf is concerned about the security situation witnessed at Kenya games," the spokesperson said."Caf is engaging with the local organising committee and the (Kenyan) government to address security issues."BBC Sport Africa has contacted the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and the CHAN local organising committee for comment but is yet to receive a response. The incident came only days after FKF was fined $20,000 by Caf,, external with $2,500 of that sum suspended, for earlier crowd control and security failures at the tournament.Kenya is co-hosting CHAN alongside Tanzania and Uganda, and stadium security issues in Nairobi were highlighted before the delayed tournament kicked off.The East African trio are also set to jointly stage the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Ticketing issues spark illegal entries
The problems at the Kasarani on Sunday stemmed from ticketing issues and the eagerness of Kenyan supporters to see their side take on Morocco on home soil.BBC Sport Africa saw hundreds of supporters left stranded outside the stadium despite holding what appeared to be valid tickets.Several said they had unknowingly bought duplicated tickets from individuals who purchased in bulk and resold them to multiple fans.Concerns are growing over the unregulated resale market operating around Kasarani on match days, with witnesses accusing rogue vendors of profiteering just metres from the gates.Less than 30 minutes before kick-off the stadium was still half empty but, as frustration mounted, some supporters began jumping over the perimeter fence to gain illegal entry.Despite a strong security presence, several breaches occurred from one end of the venue, sparking a near stampede. The ground then appeared to be over capacity as Kenya fans crammed in to watch Ryan Ogam score the decisive goal for Benni McCarthy's side, and several Harambee Stars fans entered the press box in order to secure a vantage point, with members of the Moroccan media concerned for their safety. The Kasarani is set to host three more matches at the tournament, including Kenya's group game against Zambia on Sunday and one of the quarter-final ties.Fans have raised concerns about the ticketing process at the finals, with many claiming some CHAN matches were marked as sold out before the advertised sales time.Supporters are urging authorities to address issues with the online ticketing system and crack down on fraudsters.

Manuel Akanji weighs up future as Galatasaray hit Manchester City's £15m valuation of Treble winner

Manuel Akanji is debating his future after Galatasaray hit Manchester City 's valuation of the defender. The Turkish champions want to land Akanji as well as City goalkeeper Ederson, while also holding long-standing interest in Ilkay Gundogan. Galatasaray are willing to meet the £15million required to land Akanji, who does also have interest from elsewhere ahead of the transfer window closing on September 1. The Switzerland international joined City from Borussia Dortmund for £15m three years ago, becoming an integral part of their Treble success. Pep Guardiola wants to trim the numbers in his squad this month and currently has nine defenders at his disposal. Six of those can play centrally and Akanji's competition at right back, Rico Lewis, is set to sign a new five-year contract after attracting interest from Nottingham Forest. Akanji, 30, is assessing his options and will be allowed to determine next steps. Both he and Gundogan were unused substitutes for the opening day victory at Wolves last weekend. Guardiola claimed that the squad remaining its current size would be unhealthy for team morale over the coming months. Meanwhile, exciting attacking midfielder Claudio Echeverri has joined Bayer Leverkusen on a season-long loan. Vitor Reis, Jack Grealish, James McAtee and Maximo Perrone have all moved on either on loan or permanently.

Motherwell nearing another signing after 'sharp' Hendry

Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou says the club are "moving in on" another addition after signing striker Callum Hendry this former St Johnstone, Aberdeen, and Kilmarnock forward could make his debut on Saturday against Hearts in the Premiership, with Askou saying he looks "sharp" in training after his move from MK have been linked with a move, external for former Ross County winger Regan Charles-Cook, who is a free agent after leaving Belgian side Eupen."We're not done in the window yet, which means that when we reach the end of August, we will see a squad that's even more competitive," Askou said."There is [something in the pipeline]. When we can make it official, it's up to how fast we can finalise the last bit. But we are moving in on things. It takes a bit of time with all the paperwork."On Hendry, Askou said: "He's looking good, he's looking sharp."Obviously he hasn't played any competitive league games yet, so the last bit of match fitness will come as soon as he starts to play."He's a very good player and we're really, really pleased to get him to Motherwell. He's shown his abilities, both in England and up here, and he knows a few of the players, he's played with them before, so he's very quickly integrated in the squad."We just look forward to him being part of what we do and contributing, and adding even more competition and quality to the squad, which we obviously need."Askou's side visit Tynecastle on Saturday knowing a win would make it eight games unbeaten to start the campaign under the new boss."The confidence is growing," he said. "I still think there's a lot more to come in terms of effectiveness, because all the underlying data, when we pull that out of the different data companies and suppliers, most of it is top two, top three in the league, except for the last bit of effectiveness in front of goal."There are many things to be pleased about and optimistic about going forward, but we keep pushing and keep doing what we're doing well and keep adding layers to the game, because we are facing a very, very good opponent at the weekend."
