New York mayoral race: Andrew Cuomo to run for office as independent after losing primaries to Zohran Mmadani?
Zohran Mamdani (left) and Andrew Cuomo (AP) Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is reportedly planning to run as an independent candidate in the New York City mayoral race, just days after losing the Democratic primary to socialist assemblyman Zohran Mamdani. Multiple news outlets have reported that 67-year-old Cuomo, who comes from a prominent political lineage in New York, does not plan to drop out of the race despite conceding the Democratic primary to democratic Mamdani. Mamdani is now considered the frontrunner and could become the city's first Muslim and Indian-origin mayor in the November election. Cuomo is now anticipated to remain in the race as an independent candidate under the 'Fight and Deliver' ballot line. However, he has yet to decide if he will actively campaign in the months ahead. The former governor, who resigned in 2021 amid accusations of sexual harassment and workplace bullying, now finds himself alongside embattled incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat who has also rebranded his re-election bid as an independent campaign. New York City's political landscape was shaken earlier this week when Cuomo, who had once held a 20-point lead over Mamdani in the primary, fell seven points behind. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The upset came after a well-organized push from Mamdani's campaign energized younger voters who typically don't participate in mayoral primaries. In an effort to ease worries within the business community about his policies, which includes tax increases on the wealthy, rent freezes, and free city services, 33-year-old Mamdani told ABC News this week that 'a new generation of leadership is needed.' Despite his primary victory, Mamdani has faced skepticism from prominent figures on Wall Street. 'It's officially hot commie summer,' hedge fund billionaire Dan Loeb posted on X following Mamdani's win. Although reports indicate Cuomo is moving forward with an independent run, he has until the end of Friday to officially withdraw from the 'Fight and Deliver' ballot line, according to the New York State board of elections calendar. Speaking to CNN on Thursday, Mamdani said he's 'not at all' concerned about Cuomo entering the race as an independent, noting they already competed once and that it went 'pretty well' for him. Meanwhile, the race has drawn heated rhetoric from outside New York as well. Republican Congressman Andy Ogles of Tennessee called for Mamdani, who was born in Uganda, to be deported and stripped of his US citizenship. In a post on X, Ogles wrote: 'Zohran 'little muhammad' Mamdani is an antisemitic, socialist, communist who will destroy the great City of New York. He needs to be DEPORTED. Which is why I am calling for him to be subject to denaturalization proceedings.'

US consumer spending falls unexpectedly in May
AP FILE - A shopping cart filled with groceries sits in an aisle at an Asian grocery store in Rowland Heights, Calif., Thursday, April 3, 2025. U.S. consumer spending unexpectedly fell in May as the boost from the pre-emptive buying of goods like motor vehicles ahead of tariffs faded, while monthly inflation increases remained moderate. Consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of economic activity, dropped 0.1% last month after an unrevised 0.2% gain in April, the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis said on Friday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast consumer spending would edge up 0.1%. President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs, which have led businesses and households to front-run imports and goods purchases to avoid higher prices from duties, have muddled the economic picture. Economists warned it could take time for the tariff-related distortions to wash out of the data. A record goods trade deficit in the first quarter, thanks to a deluge of imports, accounted for much of the 0.5% annualized rate of decline in gross domestic product during that period. Consumer spending also nearly braked last quarter after being propelled by households pulling forward goods purchases. Households also spent less on services last quarter, helping to restrain growth in consumer spending to only a 0.5% pace, the slowest rate since the second quarter of 2020. That data potentially puts spending on a slow growth path in the second quarter. The combination of soft consumer spending and inflation is, however, unlikely to spur the Federal Reserve to resume cutting interest rates in July. Fed Chair Jerome Powell told lawmakers this week that the U.S. central bank needed more time to gauge the impact of tariffs on prices before considering a rate cut. Economists argue that price increases have remained moderate because businesses are still selling inventory accumulated before the tariffs went into effect. They expect inflation will start picking up, beginning with consumer price data for June. The Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index gained 0.1% in May, matching the rise in April, the BEA said. In the 12 months through May, PCE inflation increased 2.3% after climbing 2.2% in April. Stripping out the volatile food and energy components, the PCE Price Index increased 0.2% last month. That followed a 0.1% rise in the so-called core PCE inflation in April. In the 12 months through April, core inflation advanced 2.7% after rising 2.6% in April. The Fed tracks the PCE price measures for its 2% inflation target. The central bank last week left its benchmark overnight interest rate in the 4.25%-4.50% range, where it has been since December.

US tariff: After China 'deal', Trump eyes trade pact with India, says ‘looking to drop full barrier'
US President Donald Trump (AP) US President Donald Trump on Friday signaled a possible breakthrough in trade negotiations with India, as Washington prepares to notify countries of new reciprocal tariffs. Speaking at a press conference, Trump said the US is seeking to dismantle trade restrictions that currently make it difficult for American businesses to operate in India, reported Reuters. 'India, I think we are going to reach a deal where we have the right to go and do trade,' Trump said. 'Right now, it's restricted. You can walk in there, you can't even think about it. We are looking to get a full trade barrier dropping, which is unthinkable and I am not sure that that is going to happen. But as of this moment, we agree that going to India and trade...' Trump's comments come as the US plans to send letters to multiple countries within the next 10 days, detailing what they will be required to pay to access American markets under a reciprocal tariff framework. 'We have made a deal with China... We have 200 countries plus,' Trump said. 'At a certain point over the next week and a half or so, or maybe before, we are going to send out a letter and talk to many other countries. We are going to tell them what they have to pay to do business with the US.' Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . AI Masterclass for Students.
