‘Sindoor toh ujad gaya': Jaya Bachchan fumes in Rajya Sabha, asks 'why did you name it Operation Sindoor'
"I talk from my heart... You have appointed big writers, who give fancy names... Why did you name it Sindoor? Sindoor to ujad gaya logo ka (they lost their Sindoor)... Those who were killed, their wives were left behind," PTI quoted Jaya Bachchan as saying.
"The tourists who went there, why did they go there? After abolition of Article 370, they were chest-thumping that terrorism will be finished... what happened? The tourists went there believing that," she added.
Bachchan expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack and said, 'You have destroyed the faith and trust of people you promised. Those families will never forgive you. You do not have the ability to apologise to those families.'
During a debate in the Rajya Sabha on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, the actor-turned-politician was also seen objecting to interruptions from other MPs.
Bachchan replied that she has 'sharp ears'. She even told Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, who was sitting next to her, "Don't control me."
She also cited Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien's statement and said, 'Derek said a good thing, the weaker the argument, the more aggressive the body language.'
'Be humble, be kind, be protective towards people who have given you this position and authority with hope that you will protect them... Protect them,' she said.
The Indian Armed Forces launched military strikes in nine locations of Pakistan and PoK in a joint military action called Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure in the region as a retaliation for the deadly Pahalgam terror attacks that claimed 26 lives.

Centre to form expert panel to draft SOP against cyberattacks, NCII content, Madras HC told
CHENNAI: The union government on Tuesday informed the Madras High Court that an expert committee will be constituted to discuss and frame a standard operating procedure (SOP) to deal with cyberattacks targeting women, especially the uploading of non-consensual intimate images (NCII) and videos on digital platforms. Senior panel counsel A Kumaraguru, appearing for the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), made the submission before Justice N Anand Venkatesh when a petition filed by a woman advocate came up for hearing. She had sought directions to MeitY to take down NCII content, uploaded by her former friend, and to block websites hosting such videos. 'Considering the sensitive nature of the matter and the rapidly evolving technological landscape, it is proposed to constitute a committee comprising officials from MeitY, Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), and Ministry of Women and Child Development (MoWCD),' he submitted. The committee, to be chaired by a joint secretary of MeitY, will frame an SOP for combating dissemination of NCII content, consisting of legal and technical solutions for immediate and long term action including steps to be taken by the victim. Senior counsel Abudu Kumar Rajaratnam, appearing for the petitioner, submitted that 13 more video links to the NCII contents have resurfaced. Referring to this, the judge noted that the content reappears 'like Ravana's head, even after being chopped off,' and called upon MeitY to consider taking action similar to that taken during Operation Sindoor, when websites were blocked for hosting adverse content.

SC to hear plea on J&K statehood on August 8
NEW DELHI The Supreme Court will take up on Friday an application seeking restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir in a timebound manner. (Getty Images/iStockphoto) The hearing in the top court came amid speculation of possible restoration of statehood to J&K after a tweet posted by chief minister Omar Abdullah on Monday sharing his 'gut feeling' that he is 'optimistic' about 'something positive' for the Union territory during Parliament's ongoing monsoon session. On August 5, 2019 the state was bifurcated into two Union territories following the abrogation of Article 370 by Parliament. On Tuesday, the application was mentioned by senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan appearing for the two applicants, academic Zahoor Ahmad Bhat and social activist Khurshaid Ahmad Malik, who had in October 2024 approached the top court to consider restoration of statehood within a specific time frame, preferably within two months. Appearing before a bench headed by chief justice of India (CJI) Bhushan R Gavai, the senior advocate said that the matter is showing on the list of business for August 8 and requested that the same should not be deleted. The CJI allowed the request by passing a short order, 'Not to be deleted'. A five-judge Constitution bench of the top court had on December 11, 2023 unanimously upheld the revocation of Article 370 and directed state elections to be conducted by September 2024. The application has been filed in the previously concluded 'In Re: Article 370 of the Constitution' case. Following elections held in three phases from September 18 to October 1 last year, a new government was formed by the National Conference-Congress alliance. National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah was sworn in as chief minister. The verdict by the Constitution bench called the abrogation the 'culmination of the process of integration' of the erstwhile state into the Union of India. It held the abrogation to be a perfectly valid exercise of power by the President, ruling that Article 370 was always meant to be a temporary provision. However, on the issue of restoration of statehood, the court chose not to give a ruling on whether the reorganisation of the state into two Union territories was constitutionally permissible. It pointed to the Centre's statement that statehood of J&K would be restored eventually. The judgment emphasised that the same should be done 'at the earliest'. The application filed through advocate Soyaib Qureshi said, 'The non-restoration of the status of statehood of Jammu & Kashmir in a timebound manner violates the idea of federalism which forms a part of the basic structure of the Constitution of India.' It further stated that the prolonged Union territory status is unwarranted and calls for prompt action in accordance with the assurance given by the Centre in earlier proceedings.

NSA Ajit Doval in Moscow to discuss Trump sanction threat on Indian import of Russian oil
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval will hold meetings with senior Russian officials in Moscow on Wednesday (August 6, 2025), to discuss India-Russia defence and security cooperation, oil sanctions, and an upcoming Modi-Putin summit. Mr. Doval's visit to Russia began even as U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he would announce 'very substantial' increases to the 25% tariffs on Indian goods expected to kick in on Thursday (August 7, 2025) because of Indian oil purchases from Russia. 'The current escalation of the geopolitical situation will also be discussed. Apart from that the topics will include such pressing matters as supplies of Russian oil [to India],' Russia's official TASS agency reported. Among talks on defence cooperation, Mr. Doval is also expected to speak about the delivery of the remaining S-400 missile systems, that played an important role during the India-Pakistan conflict and operation Sindoor in May this year. This is the NSA's first visit to Moscow since Operation Sindoor, although he attended the SCO NSA meeting in Beijing in June and met with Mr. Shoigu's deputy, Russia's Security Council Deputy Secretary Aleksandr Venediktov there. In addition, Russia's recent decision to grant recognition to the Taliban regime in Afghanistan is also expected to come up. While Mr. Doval's visit was scheduled some weeks ago, he is expected to talk about India's stand on the U.S. threats and tariffs and will also prepare for the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India later this year for the annual summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two sides will also possibly discuss the latest moves for talks between Russia and Ukraine, after the Kremlin said on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) that U.S. Special envoy Steve Witkoff will be in Moscow to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. Announcing the upcoming visit of Mr. Witkoff on Tuesday (August 5, 2025), Mr. Putin's Presidential aide Dmitry Peshkov said that Mr. Putin was prepared to meet Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after expert-level talks but gave no timeline for the meeting. When asked about Mr. Trump's latest threats against India, Mr. Peshkov said that Russia believes 'sovereign countries must have, and do have, the right to choose their trade partners, the partners in trade and economic cooperation, on their own, and independently determine those modes of trade and economic cooperation that suit the interests of a country in question.' Later this month, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will also visit Moscow for talks on the visit, which has been delayed for several years due to the Ukraine conflict which began in February 2022. PM Modi had visited Moscow last July, reviving the summit after a gap of three years. Mr. Doval travelled to Moscow overnight, leaving Delhi after the official and bilateral meetings during Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s State visit to Delhi. In the U.S., Mr. Trump doubled down on the threats against India that came despite a strong statement from the Ministry of External Affairs that called U.S. and EU sanctions on India's import of Russian oil 'unjustified and unreasonable'. 'India has not been a good trading partner, because they do a lot of business with us, but we don't do business with them. So, we settled on 25% (tariff), but I think I'm going to raise that very substantially over the next 24 hours, because they're buying Russian oil,' Mr. Trump told CNBC in an interview. Since 2022, India increased its oil imports from Russia multi-fold, defying pleas from European countries to stop increasing Russian revenues, from procuring less than a percent of its imports from Russia, to nearly 40% of its oil at its peak. After the U.S. announced plans for penalty tariffs on India last week, many Indian oil importers have reduced their demand, although the government said it would not submit to the tariffs by the U.S. and sanctions by the European Union. In its statement on Monday (August 4, 2025), the MEA had also pointed out that the U.S. and EU continue to trade on other goods with Russia.
