Man torches MBJB tow truck after car impounded in JB
Johor Bahru South district police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat confirmed that the incident occurred at 11.07am, Saturday (Aug 16) at the MBJB vehicle storage depot located at Johor Bahru Waterfront.
The suspect's actions stemmed from anger over his Perodua Axia being towed by MBJB on Wednesday.
According to police investigations, the man lacked sufficient funds to pay the required compound fine and refused to file an appeal, claiming the process was too complicated.
'Investigation revealed that the suspect poured petrol and ignited flames on the tow truck, resulting in damages totaling RM10,000,' Raub said in a statement, yesterday.
The video of the suspect setting fire to the vehicle has since gone viral.
Authorities apprehended the suspect at 1.06pm the same day. Police also seized evidence including an aluminum container and a lighter used in the arson attack.
Background checks revealed that the suspect has a previous criminal record related to drug offenses, though a current urine test returned negative results.
'The suspect is currently under a five-day remand order until August 19 to assist with investigations under Section 435 of the Penal Code,' Raub explained.
The police chief issued a stern warning to the public against taking rash actions when dissatisfied with official procedures, emphasising that such behaviour endangers lives and damages public property.
The case highlights growing tensions between motorists and enforcement authorities over vehicle impoundment procedures in Johor Bahru's busy urban areas.

GEORGE TOWN: Police have uncovered a ganja storage facility and seized drugs worth RM142,600 in raids at several locations in the state capital here. The operation, carried out by the northeast district police headquarters' Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department, began at 10pm on Friday and ended at 7am on Saturday. Five Malaysian men, aged between 38 and 56, were arrested. They are believed to have been actively involved in ganja distribution since February. State police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said inspections led to the discovery of 46kg of ganja at two residential premises and in a Toyota Alphard. "The seizures included 30 compressed blocks of ganja weighing 29,948g and 16 additional compressed blocks weighing 16kg. In total, the drugs could supply up to 92,000 users," he said in a statement today. Azizee said urine tests showed that four of the suspects tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and one for methamphetamine. "Further checks also revealed that two suspects have prior drug-related criminal records." All five have been remanded for seven days from Aug 16 to 22 to assist investigations. Police also confiscated two vehicles worth RM47,000 under the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act 1988 — a Perodua Bezza valued at RM32,000 and a Honda Accord worth RM15,000. "This brings the total value of the drugs and seized assets to RM189,600," Azizee added. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment, along with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.

Kuching man jailed eight months, fined RM50,000 for illegal possession of over 700 turtle eggs
KUCHING, Aug 18 — An unemployed man was sentenced today to eight months in prison and fined RM50,000 in default six months' jail for unlawful possession of 732 turtle eggs. Sessions Court judge Musli Ab Hamid convicted Mohamad Nazarudin Zuami, 32, on his own guilty plea to a charge under Section 37(1) of the Wild Life Protection Ordinance 1998, punishable under Section 37(2)(a) and read together with Section 29(1)(c) of the same Ordinance. The Section carries a prison sentence of up to two years and a fine of RM25,000 per individual animal part, upon conviction. The offence was committed at a house in a resettlement scheme in Jalan Batu Kawa here at about 10am on Aug 13 this year. Based on the facts of the case, personnel from the Sarawak Forestry Corporation and Marine Police Region 5 raided the house as part of an Ops Bersepadu Khazanah operation following intelligence reports. During the raid, the team arrested Mohamad Nazarudin on suspicion of possessing marine turtle eggs without permission. A search of the house uncovered 732 marine turtle eggs—577 in a green plastic basket, 42 in a purple plastic basket, 93 in a red plastic bag, and 20 in a white plastic bag. The eggs were seized after the accused failed to produce any valid permission or licence from the Controller of Wild Life. It was further established that the turtle eggs belonged to the Cheloniidae family, classified as a Totally Protected Animal under Part I of the First Schedule of the Ordinance.
