6 Ways to Give Your Attic Room a New Lease Of Life

Vogue13-06-2025
For interior designer, furniture maker and antiques dealer, Max Rollitt, a good attic space 'is one that's treated with as much thought as any other room in the house. You can get away with more daring looks.'
In need of inspiration? Here, the experts share how to give your attic a new lease of life.
Consider the layout
As with any project, it's always worth considering how you will utilize the space first, deciding which areas lend themselves to different aspects of daily life. For example: 'The parts of the room with lower head height should be utilized for tasks that don't require standing,' advises Tiffany Duggan, interior designer and founder of Studio Duggan. 'Maybe that's a cozy reading corner or a bed. Keep the tallest parts of the room for wardrobes or areas you frequently walk through.'
Envelop the space
Sparse white paint in an attic room only makes the space feel drab. Instead, so say the experts, wrapping either a paint color or wallpaper over the walls and ceiling is the way to go. 'Enveloping the space in color or pattern takes the focus off odd angles and edges and makes different surfaces feel part of the whole,' says Rollitt, while Holly Vaughn, interior designer and founder of Vaughan, adds that a characterful ceiling is not to be shied away from: 'They offer an instant coziness which are harder to create in other rooms—definitely embrace them.'

'Opening soon': Signs erected for new luxury clothing chain at shopping complex

Signs have been erected for luxury clothing chain Flannels' new Teesside Park store. The retailer, known for selling a range of premium brands such as Prada and Saint Laurent, has taken over the former Sports Direct following its closure in March. With the sports store relocating to a 40,000 square foot unit just metres away, construction crews could finally get to work on gutting the site and adding a new glass front. Now, new signs have gone up on the front of Flannels, telling shoppers to 'discover new luxury' and teasing it is 'opening soon'. Flannels is set to open a new store at Teesside Park (Image: CONTRIBUTOR) The unit's windows have been covered in plain black posters above images of models. An opening date has not yet been confirmed, although it is expected to be at some point later this year. As previously reported, Frasers Group, which owns both firms, launched the modern new Sports Direct store in March, in the space of the former Laura Ashley, Argos, USC, and MenKind stores. Pictures taken earlier this year showed how crews had stripped the old Sports Direct building out entirely following the closure, with just its central staircase and floors remaining as the new front was added. How Sports Direct previously looked (Image: GOOGLE) Once open, Flannels will join a number of new additions at the park in recent months and last year, including the B&M Garden Centre, Nike, Primark, White Stuff, Rituals, and Mango. Catherine Furlong, centre director at Teesside Park, previously said: 'It's brilliant that Sports Direct is opening here at Teesside Park. 'The store has always been incredibly popular with our visitors and the arrival of the store will be a welcome addition to meet the continued demand for sportswear and accessories brands. Lauren Barrie, group head of retail at Frasers Group, said: 'The new, elevated Teesside Sports Direct store will bring a modern shopping experience to the area. 'This opening reflects our ongoing commitment to reinvent and energise our existing store portfolio, ensuring that we're delivering standout retail destinations that meet the evolving needs of our customers.'
