Bernie Sanders calls for 4-day work week, says AI boom means it's time to clock out early
As artificial intelligence transforms the way we work,
Senator Bernie Sanders
is urging companies to rethink how productivity gains should benefit workers by giving them more free time, not less pay, as per a report.
Bernie Sanders Calls for a 4-Day Workweek Amid Rise in AI
During a recent conversation at 'The Joe Rogan Experience' with podcaster Joe Rogan, Sanders argued that the time saved because of AI tools shouldn't just boost corporate profits or pile on more work, according to a TechCrunch report. Instead, it should be passed back to employees in the form of shorter work weeks, as he urged for a
four-day work week
, according to the report.

Sanders pointed out that, 'Technology is gonna work to improve us, not just the people who own the technology and the CEOs of large corporations,' quoted TechCrunch in its report. He emphasised that, 'You are a worker, your productivity is increasing because we give you AI, right? Instead of throwing you out on the street, I'm gonna reduce your work week to 32 hours,' as quoted in the report.
TechCrunch wrote in its report that Sanders's push for this concept "would be a relief to most people, and an abject horror to anyone who has ever been to Davos. What's the point of life if you don't take every moment you can to drive shareholder value?"

Less Work, Same Pay — A Shift in Mindset
However, for many tech companies, AI-driven productivity gains often translate into expectations for workers to handle more tasks or risk layoffs, as per the report. But Sanders envisions a different path, finishing current work faster without cutting pay, freeing up workers' time for their personal lives, like catching their kid's Little League game, as reported by TechCrunch.
A Global Trend That's Already Working
He also highlighted that, 'And by the way, not a radical idea,' and added that, 'There are companies around the world that are doing it with some success,' as quoted in the report.

TechCrunch cited the example of the United Kingdom, where 61 companies (around 2,900 workers) piloted a four-day work week in the second half of 2022. It was found that out of 23 companies that shared financial data, the revenue from the beginning to the end of the trial remained almost the same, increasing by 1.4% on average, as reported by TechCrunch.
Other examples include Kickstarter, which has operated on a four-day work week since 2021, while even Microsoft Japan piloted a four-day work week in 2019, which led to a reported 40% increase in productivity, according to the TechCrunch report.
More Time to Live Your Life
Sanders said, 'Let's use technology to benefit workers,' adding, 'That means give you more time with your family, with your friends, for education, whatever the hell you wanna do,' as quoted in the TechCrunch report.

FAQs
What is Bernie Sanders proposing?
He's calling for a 32-hour, four-day workweek, without cutting pay, due to time saved by using AI tools, as per a TechCrunch report.
Why does he think AI should lead to shorter workweeks?
Because if workers are getting more done with AI, they should be rewarded with more time for themselves, not just asked to do more.

Muharram 2025 begins: Hijri New Year confirmed after moon sighting in Saudi Arabia
Following the moon sighting in Saudi Arabia on June 25, the Hijri New Year 1447 officially commenced, with the UAE set to observe a holiday on June 27/ (Representational image) The Islamic New Year, also known as Hijri New Year, has officially begun as the crescent moon marking the start of Muharram 1447 was sighted in Saudi Arabia on the evening of Wednesday, June 25, 2025, after Maghrib prayers. This signifies that the previous month, Dhul Hijjah, (May 28, 2025 to June 25, 2025 in the Gregorian calendar) concluded with 29 days this year. Following the moon sighting, the UAE has announced a one-day public holiday on Friday, June 27, for both the public and private sectors, allowing residents to observe the sacred occasion. The announcement aligns with Islamic traditions and is consistent with regional lunar calendar observances. Understanding Hijri New Year: A Spiritual Milestone The Islamic or Hijri New Year commemorates a foundational moment in Islamic history, the Hijrah (migration) of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in the year 622 CE. This event not only marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar, but also symbolizes the emergence of a united Muslim community and the early formation of Islamic society and law. While the occasion does not involve festive celebrations on the scale of Eid Al Fitr or Eid Al Adha, it remains a significant spiritual and cultural event. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo The day encourages personal reflection, increased prayer, and religious contemplation, especially in the wake of the annual Hajj pilgrimage that concludes days prior, in Dhul Hijjah. Muharram : A Sacred Month of Peace and Reflection The month of Muharram is among the four sacred months in Islam during which warfare is forbidden, a directive rooted in Islamic scripture and tradition. This restriction elevates the month's spiritual status, making it a time for heightened devotion, charitable acts, and inner reflection. The 1st of Muharram heralds not just a new calendar year, but also an invitation for Muslims worldwide to renew their spiritual goals and intentions. As such, many believers use this time to revisit their faith practices, set moral resolutions, and seek forgiveness. More than 20 countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, and Syria, officially recognize the Hijri New Year as a national holiday. This global observance reinforces the cultural and religious relevance of the occasion across diverse Muslim-majority nations. Why the Date Changes Every Year The Islamic calendar, known as the Hijri calendar, is lunar-based, meaning it follows the phases of the moon rather than the solar cycle. Each lunar month begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon, which causes Islamic dates, including Ramadan, Eid Al Fitr, and Eid Al Adha, to shift approximately 10 to 12 days earlier each year in the Gregorian calendar. As a result, the Islamic New Year does not fall on a fixed Gregorian date annually. For 2025, the crescent moon was sighted in Saudi Arabia on June 25, marking the start of Muharram 1447. In Summary The Islamic New Year (Hijri New Year) began on June 25, 2025, as the crescent moon of Muharram 1447 was sighted in Saudi Arabia. The UAE will observe a public holiday on Friday, June 27, for both public and private sectors. The Hijri calendar starts from 622 CE, the year of Prophet Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina, known as the Hijrah. Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is one of the four sacred months during which warfare is prohibited, emphasizing peace, prayer, and reflection. Over 20 nations, including the UAE, recognize this day as a national holiday.

Brijesh Mishra, who duped Punjabi students by forging Canadian college letters, arrested
1 2 3 Jalandhar: Immigration consultant Brijesh Mishra, who is accused of giving forged documents of Canadian colleges to several Indian students and then fleeing to the North American country himself in 2022, has been arrested by Jalandhar police. The case gained attention in Canada and India two years ago when it came out that Misra had given forged letters of acceptance from Canadian colleges to several students in India. Mishra had returned from Canada on Tuesday and was detained at IGI airport, Delhi, as a lookout circular had been issued against him. Subsequently, Jalandhar police brought him from there. ADCP-II Harinder Singh Gill said eight cases of fraud and related offences were registered against him in Jalandhar. Mishra was at the centre of a fraud worth crores of rupees for providing forged documents to around 700 students seeking admission to Canadian colleges. Mishra flew to Canada on Oct 14, 2022, and the cases were registered against him later, after the students and their families discovered that their documents were forged. On Wednesday, a court remanded him in police custody for seven days. In Canada, he was detained and charged by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) in June 2023 for offering immigration advice without a licence and counselling a person falsely or withholding information from authorities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo This occurred after scores of international students, mainly from Punjab and other parts of India, named Mishra and other immigration agents for duping them by providing fraudulent offer letters for admission to various colleges in Canada. As the students faced deportation, they held protests for over two weeks, after which the Canadian govt put a pause on their deportation. Then NDP leader Jagmeet Singh also raised the issue in the Canadian parliament, and PM Justin Trudeau assured to look into the cases individually. A task force was set up by senior immigration and border enforcement officials to examine the cases and decide whether individual students were complicit in defrauding the system.

Nashik will become a hub for defence-aerospace manufacturing in near future, says Fadnavis
Nashik: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday announced that Nashik would become a centre for defence and aerospace manufacturing in the near future. "Nashik will be the next destination where we will locate industries from defence and aerospace sectors. We see a lot of investment coming to Nashik," the CM said, while speaking at the conclave of industries organised by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) in Mumbai on Wednesday. Fadnavis said though defence corridors were established in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra was attracting the highest investments in defence manufacturing and technology. State govt is planning to develop a new defence corridor in Nashik, and between Ahilyanagar and Pune. Fadnavis emphasised that Nashik would specifically target the defence and aerospace sectors, making it the next destination for industries in these fields. "The new magnet we are creating is Vadhavan. The port at Vadhavan will keep Maharashtra ahead of any other state by 20 years once we complete this port. Today, JNPT is India's biggest port as it accounts for 60% of India's total traffic. But Vadhavan will be three times bigger than the JNPT port. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 40세 넘고 PC만 있으면? 이 게임 완전 내 거임! Fadnavis said state govt was planning to have an access-controlled road to the Samruddhi Highway via Nashik that would also benefit Nashik. Manish Rawal, vice-president, Nashik Industries & Manufacturers' Association (NIMA), termed the CM's announcement positive. "We have been demanding govt for many years for the setting up of the defence cluster here considering the potential Nashik has. Nashik already has a defence PSU unit like Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. There are also some units manufacturing defence spare parts here. Hence, promoting Nashik as the defence and aerospace manufacturing hub will boost the sector and development in Nashik," Rawal added.
