GEORGE TOWN, June 10 — Physical works for the Penang Mutiara Light Rail Transit (LRT) project are expected to begin within the next one to two months, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said today.
He said piling works for the RM10.5 billion project will start soon, marking a significant milestone for the state's long-awaited LRT line.
'Penang does not have to wait anymore, the project will be starting soon,' he told a press conference after inspecting the Rapid On-Demand (RoD) service here.
Loke said all technical matters between the federal and state governments have been settled, including the notice to proceed and the letter of release from the state.
'I had a meeting with the Penang chief minister last month so all outstanding issues have been resolved,' he said.
He added that the main contractor has also awarded tenders to subcontractors.
Once piling begins, Loke said a traffic diversion plan must be in place to reduce disruptions during construction.

'We need to minimise impact to road users during construction of the project,' he said.
He acknowledged that any major infrastructure project would affect traffic, but assured that mitigation measures would be taken.
The 29.5km Penang LRT line will have 21 stations and connect the southern part of the island to the northeast, as well as provide a link to the mainland.
On the RoD service, Loke said there are now 50 vans operating in 13 zones across the state – seven on the island and six on the mainland.
He said 150 drivers have been appointed to work in two shifts and one additional shift.
The most popular routes are in Tanjung Bungah and Gurney Drive, with an average of over 522 passengers daily.
This is followed by George Town and the Sunway area in Seberang Jaya.
'We hope that with this service, it will encourage more people to take public transport as this provides the first mile, last mile connectivity,' he said.
The fare for the Rapid On-Demand service is RM1 per route.

Johor tops Malaysia's investment charts with RM30.1b in Q1 2025

JOHOR BARU, June 11 — Johor recorded the highest investment performance in Malaysia for the first quarter (1Q) of 2025, with approved investments amounting to RM30.1 billion, positioning the state as the national leader in investments. State investment, trade, consumer affairs, and human resources committee chairman Lee Ting Han said the achievement was the result of an inclusive and forward-looking investment strategy driven jointly by the federal and state governments. 'A large portion of these investments focused on high-impact service sectors such as logistics, data centres, and modern business facilities, in line with Johor's aspiration to become a hub for the digital economy and high value-added industries. 'This success was also supported by various strategic initiatives, including the establishment of the Invest Malaysia Facilitation Centre as a key facilitator for investors, as well as close collaboration with the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA), federal agencies, and local authorities,' he said in a statement uploaded to his Facebook page today. He further added that strategic developments such as the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), which has gained attention from international investors, and ongoing improvements to the state's infrastructure such as roads, ports, and energy systems, have also been key catalysts for the increased investments. He noted that consistent and stable policies for investors, including industry-friendly initiatives through the Johor Fast Lane, and the availability of skilled labour through the Johor Talent Development Council, have also played a crucial role in attracting high-quality investments. 'Our highest appreciation goes to all parties who contributed to this achievement, including civil servants, industry players, investment promotion agencies such as IRDA, MIDA, Invest Johor, utility providers like Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Ranhill SAJ, and the business community. 'The Johor state government remains committed to strengthening the investment ecosystem, attract more high-quality investments, creating job opportunities for the people, and ensuring balanced and inclusive developments. 'Johor continues to advance as a new economic powerhouse in the region with sustainable policies and long-term planning,' he said. — Bernama

Singapore government extends The Online Citizen's financial ban to 2027 over falsehoods

SINGAPORE, June 11 — The Online Citizen (TOC) will remain barred from receiving any financial benefits through its website and social media platforms until 2027, after Singapore authorities extended its designation as a Declared Online Location (DOL) under the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (Pofma). In a statement today, Singapore's Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) said the extension — effective from July 21, 2025, to July 21, 2027 — was necessary 'to ensure Singaporeans continue to be alerted to TOC's record of communicating falsehoods.' The website and its associated Facebook, Instagram and X pages were first labelled as DOLs in July 2023. This status means the operators cannot monetise their content or receive financial support during the declaration period. According to MDDI, TOC 'continued to communicate falsehoods through its online platforms over the past two years', even while under the initial DOL designation. Between July 2023 and June 2025, the site was issued eight correction directions under Pofma. One such direction, issued on February 25, related to an article TOC published about modification works at the Ridout Road colonial bungalow leased by Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam's wife. In it, TOC claimed that the Singapore Land Authority had promised Shanmugam a lease extension beyond 2027 and that public funds were used for earthworks at the property from 2024 — claims which the ministry said were false. The latest DOL order requires TOC to carry a notice on all its platforms stating that it has 'communicated multiple falsehoods' and warning viewers to exercise caution when accessing its content. In addition, the MDDI said service providers, including digital advertising agencies, 'will have to take steps to ensure that their paid content on TOC's platforms are not made available in Singapore.' 'Individuals and companies must also not provide financial support to TOC's DOLs to avoid promoting the communication of falsehoods in Singapore on these platforms,' the ministry added. TOC may continue operating its platforms but is barred from monetising them during the DOL period. Under Pofma, the Singapore government can also instruct internet intermediaries to block access to DOLs if operators fail to comply with restrictions. Companies that flout such orders face fines of up to S$20,000 (RM65,900) per day, capped at S$500,000. Operators of DOLs may apply to the minister to vary or cancel the declaration. If unsuccessful, they may appeal to the High Court. TOC is one of four entities currently designated as DOLs, alongside Gutzy Asia, the Transformative Justice Collective, and Opposition politician Kenneth Jeyaretnam's platforms.

Unemployment rate hits 10-year low at 3% in April

Chief statistician Uzir Mahidin said the labour force is expected to remain optimistic and expand in the coming months, bolstered by strong economic policies and stable domestic demand. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Malaysia's unemployment rate dropped from 3.1% in March to 3% in April, the lowest in 10 years, according to a report released by the statistics department today. Chief statistician Uzir Mahidin said the number of unemployed people decreased by 0.7% to 525,900 in April 2025, compared with 529,600 in March. 'A promising national economic position has contributed to stable progress in Malaysia's labour force, with an increase in the number of employed people and higher labour force participation rates, while unemployment continues to decrease,' Bernama reported him as saying. Uzir said labour force numbers continued their upward trend in April, increasing by 0.2% to 17.34 million people compared with 17.31 million in March. 'Consequently, the labour force participation rate rose by 0.1 percentage points to 70.8% compared with 70.7% in March,' he said. In terms of the economic sector, Uzir said the services sector remained a key driver of employment growth, particularly in wholesale and retail trade, accommodation, food and beverage services, as well as transportation and storage activities. He said positive trends were also recorded across the manufacturing, construction, agriculture and mining and quarrying sectors. Uzir said the unemployment rate for youth aged 15 to 24 years remained unchanged at 10.3% in April 2025, with 298.3 thousand unemployed youths. He said the number of people outside the labour force rose to 7.17 million in April compared with 7.16 million the previous month, mainly due to housework and family responsibilities, which accounted for 43.7%, followed by schooling and training reasons at 41.1%. Uzir said the country's labour force was expected to remain optimistic and expand in the coming months, bolstered by strong economic policies and stable domestic demand. 'Despite global geopolitical tensions, Malaysia's labour force is expected to remain resilient due to stable unemployment, the growing services sector, and technology, as well as an increasing investment in digitalisation and automation,' he said.
