Efforts underway to arrange elephant for Hyderabad Muharram procession
Days after the Forest Department expressed concerns over transporting an elephant over long distances to Hyderabad for the annual Muharram procession, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen legislator Mirza Riyaz-ul-Hasan Effendi said that his party is making efforts to arrange for one.
The historic Muharram procession entails carrying the alam on an elephant from the Bibi ka Alawa. The HEH Nizam's Auqaf Committee and the Nizam Religious Trusts usually liaise with the State government for permission.
According to Mr. Effendi, who spoke to the media after a Muharram review meeting with officials and public representatives, the HEH Nizam Auqaf Committee recently met AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi after which a representation was submitted to the government seeking speedy resolution of the issue. Mr Effendi appeared confident that the government would ensure that the elephant would be arranged for.
Even as a way forward is being explored, Telangana State Waqf Board Chairman Syed Azmatullah Huseini said that ₹1 lakh was paid as an advance to bring the elephant to Hyderabad from Rajasthan.
In the meanwhile, civic authorities have been making arrangements to deal with the large number of people who are expected to visit ashoorkhanas, including the Bibi ka Alawa, Badshahi Ashoorkhana, and other smaller ashoorkhanas.
Minor repairs and civic work such as laying the flooring is underway and is expected to be done a few days before Muharram, which is expected to begin on July 6.

BBMP to provide funds to Forest dept if it develops parks on its lands: Dy CM DK Shivakumar
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 17 (ANI): Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Tuesday said that the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) would provide funds to the Forest Department if it comes forward to develop forest land in Bengaluru on the lines of Cubbon Park and Lalbagh. Speaking at the World Environment Day event at the Palace Grounds, he said, 'If the Forest Department develops its land parcels as parks on the lines of Cubbon Park and Lalbagh, it would benefit the public and save forest lands from encroachment.' 'We all need to realise that land doesn't belong to us, but we belong to Earth. We can't exploit Mother Earth, ignoring the future. The government is committed to protecting our land, water and nature. We must realise that we are there only when Earth is there,' he said. 'All of us have to take an oath to plant at least one tree in our lifetime. When I became the Bengaluru Development Minister, I introduced a scheme in which every student adopts a plant. As many as 50,000 plants were planted as part of this scheme, and the students are nurturing them,' he said. 'We have instructed schools to form a 'climate action club' comprising 25 students in each school. We need to think about our planet as pollution is increasing rapidly,' he added. Apart from this, Shivakumar also launched a sharp critique against the BJP, accusing them of using the recent Chinnaswamy stadium stampede for political mileage. Shivakumar alleged that the BJP has a pattern of exploiting tragedies. 'They are specialists in doing politics over dead bodies. They have been doing this brand of politics for a long time,' he said. Responding to a reporter's question about BJP protests demanding accountability from the Chief Minister and himself, he said, 'Do we need to carry the BJP on our shoulders for taking a high ground and criticising the government on the stampede? Who is responsible for the stampedes in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and many railway stations across the country? More than hundred people died in a stampede at a UP temple alone. I went to visit plane crash site in Ahmedabad, did I say a word about the Union government?' Pointing out that the Karnataka government has already acted, he said, 'The government has already taken action against many people in this regard. We have also formed a one-man commission to conduct investigation.' He further claimed that Congress has never politicised similar incidents elsewhere. (ANI)

Jamaat ties will backfire for UDF, says Vijayaraghavan
CPI(M) Politburo member A. Vijayaraghavan has said that by glorifying an organisation like the Jamaat-e-Islami, the United Democratic Front (UDF) leadership has ensured its own defeat. Addressing the media at Nilambur on Tuesday (June 17), Mr. Vijayaraghavan described the Jamaat-e-Islami as an organisation that views the world solely through a religious lens, approaching all issues from a sectarian perspective. 'Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan's attempts to justify the Jamaat and the UDF connection with it will backfire in Nilambur,' he said. 'Mr. Satheesan has whitewashed an outfit that should not be encouraged,' he added. 'He has scored a self-goal.' He accused the UDF of experimenting with generating votes through communal polarisation. 'But the Muslim community has rejected the UDF's association with the Jamaat-e-Islami. But the UDF is unable to realise this fact,' he said. Mr. Vijayaraghavan said that the UDF had failed to grasp the people's demands and viewpoints. 'Attempts by the UDF to resort to old tactics have made them look ridiculous,' he added. The CPI(M) leader blamed UDF candidate Aryadan Shoukath for failing to call on former DCC president V.V. Prakash's family during his campaign. He said the Congress had ignored Prakash's family. Mr. Vijayaraghavan said P.V. Anvar, who quit his Assembly membership, necessitating the June 19 byelection in Nilambur, would not make any impact on the ballot. He declined to provide a specific margin for the LDF's predicted victory, saying, 'I'm not a magician like Muthukad, I can't forecast a figure like he does. It will be a comfortable victory for LDF.' LDF convener T.P. Ramakrishnan criticised Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi for making 'false statements' about the LDF government in the State. He said UDF leaders in the State had fed Ms. Gandhi with falsehoods. 'The government gave a pension in arrears because of the Central government's unsupportive role,' he said. According to Mr. Ramakrishnan, it was the Congress government at the Centre which made the current wildlife laws. 'We want the laws to be changed in favour of the people. But the BJP government at the Centre is not allowing us,' he said, adding that the State government was not responsible for the increasing incidence of human-wildlife conflict.
