Rubber land consolidation progresses to boost local rubber industry
Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani stated that discussions with smallholders have been held to explore land management solutions.
He highlighted that this initiative could reduce Malaysia's reliance on imported rubber, which hit 1.1 million metric tonnes last year.
'These smallholdings are in the process of consolidation. We have held discussions with them (the smallholders) and if they are not interested in managing their land, they can lease it to the Malaysian Rubber Board so that we can manage it together with the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda),' he said.
Johari spoke after launching the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 ceremony at the ministry.
Deputy Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin and ministry staff were also present at the event.
Johari added that the government will enhance replanting efforts for all commodity sectors under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).
'The replanting programme will be given emphasis under the 13MP to help smallholders and to serve as a recurring source of income for the country,' he said.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently emphasised agri-commodity development, including oil palm, rubber, and cocoa, as key economic drivers. - Bernama

Over 34,000 foreign worker quotas approved to tackle plantation labour shortage
KUALA LUMPUR: More than 34,000 foreign worker recruitment quotas for the plantation sector have been recommended for approval to address the industry's manpower shortage, says Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. He said that the quotas, covering 434 companies, had been approved on a case-by-case basis as of July 9, 2025. "This special approval is expected to help meet the labour shortfall and, in turn, boost productivity and national output. The ministry remains committed to ensuring that labour needs in the plantation sector are always sufficient to support optimal economic growth," he said in a parliamentary written reply. Johari added that as of June this year, there were 258,153 active holders of the Temporary Employment Visit Pass (PLKS) in the plantation sector. However, the number remains insufficient, with the industry reporting an additional need for between 30,000 and 40,000 workers. Johari (BN–Titiwangsa) was responding to Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham (PH–Beruas), who had enquired about the total number of workers required for the plantation sector, particularly in oil palm and rubber. Ngeh had also asked about the foreign worker quota granted to address the labour shortage. Johari said that the agri-commodity sector, especially the oil palm plantation industry, was heavily reliant on foreign labour, with more than 70 per cent of its workforce comprising foreign workers. "This is because work in the sector falls under the 3D category — dirty, dangerous, and difficult — making it less attractive to local workers," he said.

Kulim airport will complement, not compete with Penang, says Kedah councillor
KUALA KETIL: The state government will press for the inclusion of the Kulim International Airport (KXP) project in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), describing it as crucial not only for Kedah, but also for the nation. State Industry and Investment Committee chairman Dr Haim Hilman Abdullah said the state's vision for a dedicated cargo airport was not intended to compete with Penang, but to complement it while positioning Kedah as a hub for northern regional development. "However, the federal government still views this project as if it is solely for Kedah, when in fact, we see it as a catalyst for northern regional development covering Kedah, Perlis, Penang and northern Perak. "This is a large and high-potential region that deserves federal support," he said at a press conference after a town hall with the Kedah State Development Corporation (PKNK) and industrial players here. Also present was PKNK chief executive officer Datuk Isahak Murat. Haim said the state's push for the project was within national interest. "Kedah is not just for Kedah, Kedah is for Malaysia. We hope the federal government can see the strategic position of the state in becoming an industrial development hub supported by infrastructure such as this cargo airport." He said six of the eight requirements for the project had been met, with only two outstanding, namely, obtaining the aerodrome licence and securing the airport's inclusion in the National Aerospace Strategic Plan. The state government, he added, had also submitted other proposals to Putrajaya for consideration in 13MP. "Many projects, whether related to logistics such as roads, airports and ports, or other aspects of economic development in Kedah, need to be prioritised and expedited," he said. In the town hall, Haim said the issues raised by industrial players were matters that could be addressed through the involvement and commitment of the relevant agencies. "This initiative by PKNK is commendable. The most important step after this session is to compile the list of issues and channel them to the relevant agencies. From there, we will obtain feedback on the timeframe for resolving these matters," he added.

13MP: Lawmakers Propose Advanced Technology To Strengthen Felda, National Defence
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Strengthening the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) must be a priority under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to ensure the long-term economic sustainability of settlers, a lawmaker told Parliament today. Datuk Shamsulkahar Mohd Deli (BN–Jempol) said 112,635 settlers across 317 Felda land schemes nationwide, including 36 in his constituency, require sustained and strategic government support to navigate new challenges. Shamsulkahar proposed adopting advanced technologies such as drones and robotic machinery in oil palm plantations to boost yields and reduce reliance on foreign labour.
