Trade Arabia19-03-2025

DP World has launched a cutting-edge electric freight solution at Jebel Ali Port in partnership with Einride, marking a major step towards decarbonising terminal operations.
Now running around-the-clock, the first wave of the electric fleet is set to move over 204,000 twenty-foot containers annually, supporting DP World's efforts to accelerate the transition to greener logistics.
The project is part of a groundbreaking partnership between DP World and Einride signed in May 2024 to electrify inter-terminal container flows at Jebel Ali Port, the largest seaport in the Middle East. It aligns with DP World's broader sustainability agenda which includes electrifying its fleet of internal terminal vehicles (ITVs) and implementing innovative partnerships to reduce emissions.
The initiative will reduce 14,600 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) annually, compared to diesel operations, supporting DP World's science-based targets (SBTi) and ambition to make global trade smarter and greener.
Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director, DP World GCC, said: 'Decarbonising logistics is a core priority for DP World. We are actively electrifying our operations, integrating AI-powered solutions and working closely with our partners like Einride to support our net zero goals. As the 10th busiest port globally, Jebel Ali is setting the benchmark for the electrification of transport in high-volume trade hubs.'
Robert Falck, CEO and Founder at Einride, said: 'This marks the first of many milestones as we set out to have the largest deployment of electric, autonomous freight mobility in the Middle East. The UAE is uniquely positioned to lead this sustainable transition given its forward-thinking approach to innovation, and we are proud to drive this in partnership with DP World.'
The electric fleet is being deployed as part of a multi-phased rollout, which integrates Einride's full platform, including electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, and the AI-driven Einride Saga operating system. A second wave will follow later this year, and the full fleet in 2026 - capable of moving 2 million twenty-foot containers annually. This tiered deployment uses Einride's data-driven analysis to optimise cost and operational efficiency while laying the groundwork for future autonomous deployment.
With today's announcement, these vehicles are now actively transporting goods within Jebel Ali Port, using Einride's technology to make container handling more sustainable.

DP World unit in deal to develop Al Rawdah Special Economic Zone project

Mahadha Development Company, an Emirati-Omani joint venture majority owned by DP World, today (May 26) signed an agreement with Omani authorities for the development of the first phase of Al Rawdah Special Economic Zone in Al Buraimi Governorate. The Phase 1 will cover 14 sq km, with expansion plans to reach 25 sq km in Phase 2. The zone will benefit from direct connectivity to both Jebel Ali Port in Dubai and Omani ports, enhancing cross-border logistics. Under the agreement, Mahadha will be responsible for developing the infrastructure and facilities, preparing the masterplan and environmental studies, and designing the initial layout. The first phase will target a range of economic activities, including manufacturing, logistics, warehousing, pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, plastics, mining, food processing, and security and safety services - all provided through an integrated one-stop-shop service model. The agreement was signed by Engineer Ahmed bin Hassan Al Dheeb, Deputy Chairman of the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (Opaz), and Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, representing Mahadha Development Company, which will develop the new zone. The deal was inked in the presence of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, and Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham Al Said, Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth of Oman. On the occasion, Bin Sulayem said: "The Al Rawdah Special Economic Zone represents a new chapter in the growing economic relationship between the UAE and the Sultanate of Oman. Through close collaboration with Opaz and our Omani partners, this new zone will strengthen our deep trade ties while reflecting our shared ambition for sustainable and diversified economic growth." "At DP World, we are committed to developing a world-class platform that will create new opportunities for growth, strengthen connectivity and bring long-term economic value to both Oman and the UAE," he stated. In his speech, Engineer Al Dheeb said: "The Al Rawdah Special Economic Zone has been designed to support key development goals, including creating jobs, attracting advanced knowledge and modern technologies, and fostering a business-friendly environment that aligns with the sustainable development objectives of Oman Vision 2040." DP World unveils $2.5bn global logistics investment plan for 2025

DP World will invest $2.5 billion this year to expand its global logistics network, launching major infrastructure projects across India, Africa, South America and Europe in response to rising demand for resilient, integrated supply chain solutions. The four major developments – across four continents – extend DP World's end-to-end capabilities, significantly expanding capacity in its network of global ports and reinforcing its position as a key enabler of global trade, said DP World in a statement. Construction is underway on a new $510 million terminal at Tuna Tekra in Gujarat on India's northwestern coast. Featuring a 1.1 km berth and annual capacity of 2.19 million TEU, the terminal will connect India's vast hinterland to global markets through a network of roads and railways, enabling faster, more efficient trade access for Indian businesses. DP World is moving ahead with the development of the new deep-sea port at Banana in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), it stated. The 450,000 TEU a year facility on the DRC's Atlantic coast will bring significant cost and time savings for the country's trade, as it will attract more direct calls from larger vessels from Asia and Europe, boosting economic growth across the region. Up the West African coast, work is already underway on the new 1.2 million TEU a year Ndayane Port in Senegal. An initial investment of $830 million is being made in this strategically vital project, which will support the country's development for the rest of the century, it added. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman and Group CEO of DP World, said: "Global trade is evolving fast, and we are investing boldly to shape its future. Despite short-term uncertainty, this $2.5 billion commitment reflects our confidence in long-term trade growth and our determination to build the infrastructure needed to keep the world connected." "We are building a unique array of assets and suite of capabilities, helping our customers stay competitive, support local economies and enable global access. Nobody can match us for the diversity and breadth of our supply chain solutions," he stated. At the Port of Posorja in Ecuador, DP World has initiated a $140 million berth expansion that will expand the dock to a total of 700 metres, enabling it to accommodate two post-Panamax vessels at the same time. Finally, at the London Gateway logistics hub, DP World is investing $1 billion to build two new shipping berths and a second rail terminal. The expansion will create 400 new jobs, support the UK's growing role as a trade gateway and move the port closer to becoming Britain's biggest container port by the end of the decade. The 2025 investments underscore DP World's strategy to create a uniquely connected global platform, from ports and terminals to inland logistics, marine services, warehousing, freight forwarding and technology, said the statement. It's married to a growing network of freight forwarding offices – now standing at more than 240 worldwide, to meet the needs of ever more cargo owners. "Our integrated model gives us visibility and control across the entire supply chain, helping our partners reduce risks and costs," noted Bin Sulayem.

Maritime leaders call for innovation, partnership to keep trade moving

Resilience, partnership, innovation and sustainability will define the future of maritime logistics and that's where the Gulf has a real opportunity to lead, a top executive has said. Abdulla bin Damithan, CEO & Managing Director, DP World GCC, said: 'Let me start with resilience. More and more global operators are turning to the Gulf for stability. In a sector facing uncertainty, our region has proven to be an anchor point of stability, certainty and security. This is no accident. It's the result of years of coordinated investment in maritime infrastructure. "The Middle East has multimodal marine networks that connect over 150 ports worldwide. From the $800 million expansion of the South Container Terminal in Jeddah to advanced automation at Jebel Ali, we are building smart, resilient maritime networks that can adapt to demand," he said. He was speaking at the 11th Seatrade Maritime Logistics Middle East conference and exhibition, which opened in Dubai on Tuesday (May 6). It was officially inaugurated by Eng Hessa Al Malek, Senior Advisor, Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure; Abdulla bin Damithan, CEO & Managing Director, DP World GCC; Andrew Williams, President, Seatrade Maritime, part of Informa Markets, and senior representatives of the maritime community. In a video address to a packed Main Stage, Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy & Infrastructure, Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure said: 'We aim to position UAE Maritime Week among the world's top maritime events, with all stakeholders' engagement in shaping the future of this industry. The UAE continues to rise as a global logistic hub, guided by visionary leadership and bold strategies. 'In the UAE, we continue to improve the ports' handling capacity, which today handles over 21 million TEUs. The maritime sector contributes nearly 136 billion dirhams, or $37 billion to our GDP, with a target to increase it to 200 billion dirhams, or more than $54 billion in the near future.' Speaking to 2050 net-zero targets, he added: 'In our view, the world needs to be aligned when it comes to net-zero targets by 2050, and for us in the UAE, we will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to achieve the UAE Net-Zero target by 2050.' Meanwhile, Damithan further said: "Our industry has always been seen as slow and resistant to change – but I believe this stereotype is changing fast. In the past year, I have seen digitalisation and automation projects jump forward. From AI tools that help choose the best routes and save fuel, to digital twins and predictive analytics, innovation is front and centre. Today, platforms like CARGOES Flow have made our region a leader in anticipating disruption before it happens. This level of automation supports how our ports work together as part of a coordinated system. From gates to cranes to yard equipment, this technology is reducing human error, speeding up operations, and improving vessel call performance. Even upstream, we're seeing the positive impact this can have. 'Which brings me to my final point: sustainability. Maritime shipping accounts for nearly 3% of global emissions. And we can't stand still – even if the odds seem against us. Regulatory frameworks are already shaping how vessels operate and where they berth. We have no choice but to decarbonise – and fast. The good news is that the Gulf is ahead of the curve, because we're using maritime infrastructure to keep change within reach. Port equipment has been electrified across terminals. Investments are being made in shore power so all vessels can plug in at berth – reducing emissions, noise, and fuel burn. And with the UAE now home to the world's first carbon removal deal for a port operator, we're setting the bar for what comes next." He ended with a resounding call to action: 'The global trade landscape is changing. Today the waters are rough, and trade maps are being redrawn. But I am confident that we can navigate it successfully. Let's move together. Let's move smarter. And above all - let's keep trade moving.' The UAE Maritime Week is held under the patronage of the Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure with Seatrade Maritime Logistics Middle East held as the focal exhibition and conference of the week-long activities.
