Australian Groves wins penultimate Tour stage, Pogacar in yellow
Runaway overall race leader Tadej Pogacar maintained his lead over Jonas Vingegaard ahead of Sunday's 21st and final stage in Paris.
The Team UAE rider has a 4min 24sec advantage heading into what could be a tricky finale, a 132km ride from Mantes-la-Ville to the Champs-Elysees, but featuring three ascents of the cobbled streets of Montmartre.
The champion-in-waiting was left shaking his head after almost getting taken down in a fall 500m from the line on Saturday as lashing rain made the roads hazardous on the run in to Pontarlier.
This was a third stage win for Alpecin after Jasper Philipsen and Mathieu van der Poel took the two opening wins.
"They gave me a free role in the final days," Groves said after both Philipsen and Van der Poel pulled out.
"I'm going to enjoy this one and celebrate with my team and enjoy the Champs tomorrow."
Just 158 riders crossed the rolling hills at the foot of the Jura and many looked haggard after the fast racing in the Alps.
So along the Swiss border, most of the peloton seemed happy to let an escape get a 7min lead after an exhausting slog that started July 5.

Australia's beaming Harris foils Walsh treble bid at swimming worlds
SINGAPORE - Australia's Meg Harris denied Gretchen Walsh a sprint treble at swimming's world championships in Singapore on Sunday, winning the 50m freestyle for her first individual world title. Harris, the Paris Olympics silver medallist, powered home in 24.02sec to beat Chinese pair Wu Qingfeng (24.26) and Cheng Yujie (24.28). The American Walsh, who won gold in the 50m and 100m butterfly in Singapore, finished fourth in 24.40. Australia also won the men's 50m freestyle, with Cam McEvoy taking gold on Saturday. Harris said becoming an individual world champion was "the dream I have been dreaming of the whole time". "This is why I swim," said the 23-year-old, who could not stop smiling as the magnitude of her achievement set in. "I still can't put it into words, it'll take a while to process." World record holder Sarah Sjoestroem of Sweden, the reigning Olympic champion and a four-time world title-holder in the event, did not compete in Singapore. "I love sprinting, I love racing. Could not be more happy," added Harris. The Australian has now won six world golds in her career. The previous five were in relay events.

Farrell's Lions fall short of greatness after conquering Australia
The British & Irish Lions had already done enough to assure their legacy before their dream of a 3-0 series triumph was washed away in a maelstrom of lightning, rain and defiant Australians on Saturday night. Lions Test series triumphs are rare and the 2025 squad captained by Maro Itoje and coached by Andy Farrell will take their rightful place alongside the esteemed post-war tourists of 1971, 1974, 1989, 1997 and 2013. 'I know we're disappointed but we should be unbelievably proud of what we achieved as a group,' Farrell said after the 22-12 defeat. 'Lions tours are tough and ... upon reflection after tonight, I'm sure we'll be super proud of the achievements. 'How we got the job done in that type of theatre will live with us forever. These lads have been an absolute dream to work with. It's been the time of our lives.' In fact, had the Lions reproduced their dominance of the first hour of the Brisbane opener and final 50 minutes in Melbourne to take a third Test win in Sydney, it might only have diminished their achievement in taking out the series. Starting with Ben Youngs last year, there have been plenty of voices suggesting that Australian rugby has fallen so far that the country no longer deserves the honour of the Lions' visit every 12 years. Those voices were noticeably absent from the Lions camp during a series where the two teams were separated by only a single point over the three tests. Lions coach Farrell is convinced his old friend and mentor Joe Schmidt is building something special in Australia and if he is correct, it may be a couple of years before the achievement of his squad is fully appreciated. 'Come the 2027 World Cup they're going to be a force to be reckoned with, 100%,' Farrell said this week. 'It would be tragic not to tour here. We've had a blast.' Farrell may have been formed as a player in rugby league but the Englishman has shown over the last eight weeks that few understand the spirit and dynamics of the Lions better.
