Two years ago, Rochester first responders saved Jeff Zeiger's life. He wants to honor their life-saving work
Apr. 24—ROCHESTER — In October 2023, Rochester resident Jeff Zeiger suffered cardiac arrest while strolling along the bike path of Cascade Lake in northwest Rochester.
Zeiger was lucky. The vast majority of people die from such cardiac events when they occur outside a hospital setting. If not for a woman who was walking behind him and who began immediately to administer CPR and the work of firefighters whose station was not half a mile away, Zieger would not be with us today.
Zeiger's heart was shocked back to life.
And so, Zeiger feels grateful. He's not stopped feeling grateful. So much so that Zeiger wants a memorial bench installed near the spot where he almost died as a way of honoring the work of first responders.
The work of first responders is taken for granted, he said.
"I'm trying to bring visibility and gratitude to the first responders in our city and elsewhere to make people more aware of what they do," Zeiger said. "They run into freaking buildings that are on fire when you and I run the other way."
The bench Zeiger has in mind would be located on the south side of Cascade Lake, near the fishing pier. First responders are unsung heroes, he said. He would like them to be a little less unsung. It would join other memorial benches that dot the 2.4-mile loop.
Zeiger, a retired university professor, imagines the 5-inch-by-10-inch plaque inscribed with a simple statement of dedication to the work first responders do. The language would be general. It would not specifically mention that they saved Zeiger's life. The focus would be on first responders, not on him.
It would cost an estimated $3,200 to purchase and install a memorial bench. So far, $415 has been raised on a GoFundMe site .
Zeiger would love a dedication ceremony for the bench to be held on Oct. 28, a date that has special meaning for him. It was the day on which Rochester first responders saved his life. It is also, coincidentally enough, the day when National First Responders Day is celebrated.
"Isn't that crazy," Zeiger said.

Conservationist Shiloh Schulte, of Kennebunk, dies in research helicopter crash in Alaska
A conservationist from Kennebunk, Maine, died in a helicopter crash while conducting conservation work in Alaska. The death of Shiloh Schulte, PhD,, who previously served as an elected official in Kennebunk, was announced by the Manomet Conservation Sciences. At the time, his colleagues said he had a "really great way about him to move things forward, regardless of where he is on the spectrum of an issue.' Schulte's work with the Manomet Conservation Sciences included working as the coordinator for the American Oystercatcher Recovery Program. He is credited with rebuilding the American Oystercatcher, a large shorebird once believed to be locally extirpated, by 45%. "Shiloh gave his life in the service of something greater than himself, dedicating himself to preserving the natural world for future generations," the Manomet Conservation Sciences said. His family said he will be remembered as more than a scientist. "Shiloh was so much more than a scientist," the GoFundMe page states. "He was a devoted husband and father, a loving son and brother, a generous neighbor, and a pillar of his community. Whether he was helping a neighbor with yard work, leading the town Select Board, running a marathon or inspiring others through his photography and storytelling, Shiloh gave his all—always with a warm heart and boundless energy." 'She is so missed' - tribute paid for Colchester woman who died unexpectedly
A CARING daughter has paid tribute to her 'kind-hearted' mum who died unexpectedly last month amid a fundraiser to give her the 'send-off she deserves'. Pamela Diver died at her home at the age of 46 in May. Her daughter, Alishia Diver, 22, from Colchester, says Pamela was found on May 19 and had died unexpectedly, two days after she last visited her on May 17. Family's dog ‘Zeus' dragged into Florida pond by massive alligator and miraculously comes out alive: ‘I don't know how he survived'
A family dog named Zeus summoned the strength of his namesake and managed to escape the literal jaws of death when an alligator dragged him from his backyard into a nearby pond, the dog's owners said. 'The vet told us the gator had just missed his jugular — it looked like Zeus's entire head had been in the gator's mouth. The fact that he made it out alive is nothing short of a miracle,' the family wrote in a GoFundMe post. Even the vet said, ''I don't know how he survived,'' the family added. 3 Zeus, a German Shepherd who survived a gator attack, wears the cone of shame while he recovers. GoFundMe Zeus, a German Shepherd, heard a noise on the night of June 2 and scooted through his doggie door out of his home in Wesley Chapel, Fla., to investigate, the family said. In an instant, an alligator came crashing through their backyard fence, snatched Zeus and dragged him to a pond, they said. 'My dad came in frantic. I'd never seen him like that. He's a tough guy. He said, 'The alligator just took Zeus,'' Zeus' owner Susan Alkhatib told WFLA. 'We have it covered right now because of what happened.' The family had taken a video of the scaly culprit earlier in the day when the gator had been lurking along the banks of the water. The family told WFLA that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has sent out trappers, but so far, the guilty gator has avoided capture. 3 Zeus suffered a broken jaw and underwent surgery after an alligator attacked him and dragged him into a pond near his home in Florida. GoFundMe Meanwhile, Zeus is slowly but surely recovering, according to the family. He sustained a fractured jaw, puncture wounds, and the vet needed to manually realign his jaw and wire it together. He's on a liquid diet fed to him with a syringe until he has another surgery in about 8 weeks. He'll also need to wear a muzzle for at least another month. A picture of the recovering miracle pup shows him post-surgery with his wounds around his neck and face, with much of his fur shaved off from the surgery. 'Despite it all, Zeus continues to be such a trooper,' the family wrote in a recent update on GoFundMe. 'He's getting tons of love, snuggles, and care.'
