Covid-19 India Update: Delhi Reports 100+ New Cases; Kerala Logs 430 In One Week

Several states including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Karnataka have seen an uptick in fresh infections due to two new variants of Covid-19.
Delhi reported at least 104 Covid-19 cases during the last week, while Kerala and Maharashtra have logged 430 and 209 new cases respectively in the same period, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
A total of 1,009 active cases have been reported from across India, including 12 in West Bengal, 13 in Rajasthan, 15 in Uttar Pradesh, 69 in Tamil Nadu, 47 in Karnataka and 83 in Gujarat.
Several states including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Karnataka have seen an uptick in fresh infections. However, most of these cases have been classified as mild and are being managed through home isolation, officials added.
In the backdrop of rising cases, India's SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) has identified two new coronavirus subvariants: NB.1.8.1 and LF.7. Both have been classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as 'Variants Under Monitoring" rather than 'Variants of Concern" or 'Variants of Interest," reflecting the current low level of global public health risk.
An 84-year-old man with severe comorbidities had earlier died in Bengaluru and later tested positive for Covid-19, marking Karnataka's first virus-related fatality in recent weeks. In Maharashtra, a 21-year-old man with severe diabetes died at a Thane hospital after testing positive for Covid-19.
While the situation is evolving, health authorities across affected states urge the public to maintain preventive measures, stay updated with vaccinations, and avoid unnecessary panic as the country monitors the impact of these new variants closely.

Bengaluru, Karnataka registered two more Covid-related deaths on Saturday, pushing the tally to nine in the state, said health department officials. A 46-year-old man from Ballari and a 78-year-old man from Belagavi, who were admitted for Severe Acute Respiratory Infections, passed away on June 5. Active Covid cases in India cross 6,000-mark
New Delhi, India's active Covid case tally crossed the 6,000 mark with 769 new infections being reported in the last 48 hours, according to the Union health ministry data released on Sunday. Kerala continues to be the most affected state, followed by Gujarat, West Bengal and Delhi, according to the ministry. Due to the rising Covid cases, the Centre is conducting mock drills to check facility-level preparedness and has instructed all states to ensure availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines, official sources had said. There are 6,133 active Covid cases in India , and six more deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, the ministry said. Official sources have maintained that most cases are mild and managed under home care. Since January this year, 65 deaths have been reported in the country. There were a total of 257 active patients in the country on May 22. A series of technical review meetings were held on June 2 and 3 under the chairpersonship of Dr Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services, to evaluate the Covid situation and preparedness measures. Representatives from the Disaster Management Cell, Emergency Management Response Cell, National Centre for Disease Control, Indian Council of Medical Research, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, central government hospitals in Delhi, and all states and Union Territories were part of the meeting. Official sources on June 4 said state and district surveillance units under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme are closely monitoring Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI). "Testing is recommended for all admitted SARI cases and 5 per cent of ILI cases as per guidelines, and positive SARI samples are sent for Whole Genome Sequencing through the ICMR VRDL network, " an official source said. 'They're not toxic and they're not harmful." McCain also posted this week about 'concerning data" about mRNA vaccines and said friends had experienced health problems after getting the Covid-19 shot. As part of the post, she shared a video that suggested material in the vaccines could stick around long-term and change a person's genome. The messenger RNA in Covid-19 vaccines instructs cells in the body to make a certain piece of the virus' spike protein — the structure on the surface of the coronavirus. The mRNA vaccine is like a blueprint that the body uses to train the immune system to recognize the virus that causes Covid and protect against it, Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, told CNN. 'MRNA is only in there in minute amounts," Schaffner said. 'The spike protein is metabolised. It's broken up by our own body very, very quickly. So it's not in a position to disseminate or be distributed throughout the body requiring some sort of 'detoxification'. 'It's simply not scientifically a valid concept." Since mRNA is so short-lived, vaccine makers do make a modification that allows it to stick around a little longer than it would otherwise, Rasmussen said. 'But mRNA, even modified mRNA like in these vaccines, does not stay around forever," Rasmussen said. 'It's still not a very stable molecule." Rasmussen said she has also read that some believe the lipid nanoparticle used to get the mRNA into the cells lingers and is toxic. The lipid nanoparticle, Rasmussen said, 'also don't stick around forever". She said they get broken down at about the same rate the mRNA does, 'or even maybe a little before." 'I wonder if the very name of the protein, this 'spike protein' just makes people uneasy," Schaffner told CNN. If scientists called it something like the 'key protein" — since it's like a key that goes into a lock in the cell, which enables the protein to get inside 'and then do its good work" — that 'might not have evoked quite as much anxiety," Schaffner suggested. SUPPLEMENT MAKERS AIMING FOR PROFITS Unlike pharmaceuticals, which must be tested and approved before they go to market and then comply with strict regulations about how they can be marketed, the US Food and Drug Administration doesn't have the authority to approve dietary supplements before they are marketed. Fear or distrust of Covid-19 vaccines is an easy target for supplement makers, Cohen said. 'This is a perfect scenario for supplements to jump in to the rescue," Cohen said. 'You manufacture a false health concern, and then you have the solution that you can settle with a supplement. It's really a perfect opportunity for supplement manufacturers to profit from. From something that doesn't even exist." 'Are you trying to wash away the effects that boosted immunity against Covid? Is that the goal? I think it's a very vague, moving sort of target," Cohen told CNN. 'Or is it more that there's some fear that the Covid vaccine causes more harm than the government's letting on. Then the idea is that you sell these supplements to prevent that mystery harm….I think it's a health fear mongering approach and profiting by the fear." No vaccine is perfect, the experts said, but the risk with the Covid vaccine is extremely small and the problems like a sore arm or a low-grade fever that some of his patients have experienced resolved quickly.
