Active Covid cases in India cross 6,000-mark
New Delhi, India's active Covid case tally crossed the 6,000 mark with 769 new infections being reported in the last 48 hours, according to the Union health ministry data released on Sunday.
Kerala continues to be the most affected state, followed by Gujarat, West Bengal and Delhi, according to the ministry.
Due to the rising Covid cases, the Centre is conducting mock drills to check facility-level preparedness and has instructed all states to ensure availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines, official sources had said.
There are 6,133
active Covid cases in India
, and six more deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, the ministry said. Official sources have maintained that most cases are mild and managed under home care.
Since January this year, 65 deaths have been reported in the country. There were a total of 257 active patients in the country on May 22.
A series of technical review meetings were held on June 2 and 3 under the chairpersonship of Dr Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services, to evaluate the Covid situation and preparedness measures.
Representatives from the Disaster Management Cell, Emergency Management Response Cell, National Centre for Disease Control, Indian Council of Medical Research, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, central government hospitals in Delhi, and all states and Union Territories were part of the meeting.
Official sources on June 4 said state and district surveillance units under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme are closely monitoring Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI).
"Testing is recommended for all admitted SARI cases and 5 per cent of ILI cases as per guidelines, and positive SARI samples are sent for Whole Genome Sequencing through the ICMR VRDL network, " an official source said. PTI PLB RHL

Maharashtra reports 77 Covid cases, tally since Jan 1 reaches 1,439
Maharashtra on Sunday reported 77 COVID-19 cases, taking the state's tally since January 1 this year to 1,439, a health department official said. Of the new cases, 41 have been reported from Pune, 25 from Mumbai, six from Kolhapur, four from Navi Mumbai and one from Nagpur. Of the 1,439 cases detected in the state in 2025, a total of 665 are from Mumbai, including 659 reported in May, the official added. The number of COVID-19 tests carried out in Maharashtra since January 1 was 16,750, as per the health department. Eighteen persons have died from the ailment since the start of the year, 17 of whom had co-morbidities. Haryana cases Haryana reported 12 new Covid cases on Sunday, of which 10 were from Gurugram district, officials said. According to the state health department, the number of active cases in the state on Sunday was 100 while it has reported a total of 181 cases this year. On Sunday, Gurugram and Faridabad reported 10 and two cases, respectively. Of the active cases, only one patient was admitted in a health facility in the state, the department said.

Man who died after head surgery tested positive for Covid
Trichy: A 60-year-old man, who contracted Covid-19, died at Trichy MGMGH on Sunday following complications of head surgery which he underwent after a road accident on May 11, according to officials. Health officials said the deceased, Govindhanathan, was admitted to a private hospital after an accident on May 11 and underwent FTP decompression craniotomy. He took a swab test at the private hospital on May 20, and the results returned positive on May 23. He was discharged from the hospital and was isolated at his home. A health official told TOI, "He was admitted to MGMGH on June 5 with a poor Glasgow Coma Scale score. Health staff came to know about the Covid history later and isolated him at the GH. But no retest was conducted due to a lack of testing availability at the time. Meanwhile, he died around 8.45am on Sunday." The official denied that the cause of death was related to Covid-19. "The cause of death can be concluded only after an autopsy report comes," the official added. Meanwhile, health officials reported that there are two active Covid-19 cases in the district. Both patients, a 25-year-old female and a 51-year-old male, are in home isolation.

State reports 7 new Covid cases
1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: Seven new Covid cases were reported in the state in the last 24 hours, taking the total to 45, of which 33 are active cases. Most of these cases are from Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Official sources said Covid patients are undergoing treatment in hopital isolation wards. "We have not received any report regarding severe Covid illnesses. The public should follow Covid-appropriate behaviour like using masks, proper hand hygiene, and avoiding crowded places. The situation is under control, and people should not panic," said Nilakantha Mishra, director of public health. Odisha govt has taken necessary steps to monitor and contain the spread of infection after receiving an advisory from the Centre. According to the advisory, individuals with acute respiratory illness should monitor their condition and seek medical care if symptoms worsen. The Centre has instructed the state to ensure availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators and essential medicines. Capital Hospital conducted a mock drill and opened an isolation ward on Sunday to treat Covid patients.
