Oak Ridge's 1st game of season is Thursday; the storm that is Class 6A is coming
In sports, milestone numbers that end in a zero are typically considered a positive, while birthdays that tag a zero on a person's age are not so positive. They're sometimes downright depressing, but I digress. A new season is about to begin for the Oak Ridge High School Wildcats and right now every football team begins 0-0. Every team right now has the same goal and that is to maintain at least one zero - a zero at the end of their record. On Thursday night, Oak Ridge is hoping to add a special zero to its long tradition of winning football. Last season's quarterfinal win against East Hamilton was the Wildcats' 699th win as a program. Only 11 other teams in Tennessee history have won 700 or more games and Oak Ridge will become the youngest school in Tennessee to do so, whenever that win happens. Of the 11 teams in front of Oak Ridge, Maryville is the next youngest having started their football program 17 years before Oak Ridge did in 1943. Maryville is the state's winningest program with 866 wins since 1926. Only three teams have won more than 800 wins and two of the three are on Oak Ridge's schedule this season. Dobyns-Bennett is second with 834 wins since 1921. The Wildcats will face Dobyns-Bennett at Blankenship Field on Sept. 12 and Maryville on Oct. 30. The only other team to win 800 games is Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, which began football during the William McKinley administration in 1899. Even I wasn't calling ballgames then. Milestone wins for Oak Ridge. No. 1, Harriman, 1943 No. 100, Cookeville, 1957 No. 200, Riverside, 1971 No. 300, Newport, 1981 No. 400, Gallatin, 1991 No. 500, Bradley Central, 2002 No. 600, McMinn County, 2013 * The Gallatin win was in the state championship game. Over the next couple of days leading up to Thursday's game with Halls, I will be previewing the 2025 Wildcats, offensively and defensively and I'll add my own little observations and trivia from some previous games with Halls. I had a long sit-down interview with Oak Ridge head coach Derek Rang and we'll discuss the team position by position and the potential players we'll see this season. This season is the 83rd season of football for Oak Ridge and Coach Rang will begin his third season. I'm sure Coach Rang would love to start Oak Ridge's first season in Class 6A football with a milestone win over Halls and begin on a positive note. Last season, Oak Ridge began 0-2 with losses to Jefferson County and Powell, but went on a deep playoff run at the end of the season. Arguably, Oak Ridge's first game with Halls and the last game with Maryville might be the toughest two teams on the regular season schedule, which is about as tough as any schedule Oak Ridge has ever played. There are no easy weeks in 6A football. Even Clinton, a Class 5A school looked good in the preseason, winning the Powell 7 on 7 tournament. Several teams on the schedule face the unknown though with new coaches. Former Oak Ridge coach Scott Cummings left Lenoir City after one season, while Bearden, Cleveland, Clinton, and Bradley Central all have new head coaches. Dobyns-Bennett, Farragut, Halls, Maryville and Hardin Valley return their head coaches from a year ago. The playoff structure will change for Oak Ridge this season as well. No longer will they be facing Rhea County and McMinn County in the early rounds. They'll face off against the upper East Tennessee 6A schools instead. Schools like Dobyns-Bennett, Science Hill, Jefferson County and Morristown East. In the second round they would match up against teams either from Wilson or Rutherford counties. That includes the State Champion Oakland Patriots. The Wildcats better get ready because the storm that is 6A is coming. The Halls team that is coming to Oak Ridge is a 5A school, but experts, including Coach Rang, are expecting them to have a big year. In some ways they are a mirror image to Oak Ridge. Like Oak Ridge, who has a three-year starter at quarterback in Blaine Stansberry, Halls also has a three-year starter at quarterback in Amari Lethgo. Lethgo is six-feet-tall, weighs 190 pounds and is a pure athlete as he also plays catcher on the Red Devil baseball team. Brody Rogers returns as a 6'1, 200-pound receiver with more than 1,000 yards a year ago. Jarrell Chandler, another highly touted receiver plays a huge role in their spread offense. Defensively, they are led by All-State Dom Culp, a 5'10, 185-pound linebacker. Halls is a well coached team that went 8-4 last season, losing to West in the second round of the playoffs. Most of their team is back and they will be a tough opening game for the Wildcats. The game is a "Rivalry Thursday" televised game on WBIR+, the 19th in Oak Ridge history. The Wildcats are 9-9 in these games, but have won the past two, which were wins over Karns in 2022 and Powell in 2023. Oak Ridge and Halls are playing for the 21st time since the first meeting in 1977. Oak Ridge is 18-2 all-time in the series with Hall's only wins coming in 1986 and 1992. The last time they played was in 2014 at Blankenship Field. In 2013, now Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins scored his first Oak Ridge touchdown against Halls at Halls. Two games come to mind in the series. The 1986 loss at Halls was a 7-6 loss on a missed extra point by Sam Sampson that doomed the Wildcats. Halls was led that season by future Vols' Randy Hall and Jason Julian. The other game was in 1988 when the No. 2 in the state, Wildcats eked out a 10-6 win at Halls despite being totally dominated in the time of possession. I don't want to even talk about Newly Wayland's performance against the Wildcats in 1992. Despite the overwhelming record in favor of Oak Ridge, Halls has always been tough on the Wildcats and I wouldn't expect anything different on Thursday night. In my next story, I will preview the 2025 Wildcats by position. The Wildcats play Halls at Blankenship Field at 7 p.m. Thursday. David Clary has been the "Voice of the Wildcats" for more than 40 years and may be heard during football season on FM 92.7 and on YouTube on the Prepradio Channel.
