Underwater Pacific volcano expected to erupt. What would that mean for WA?

If you've never heard of the Axial Seamount, you'd be forgiven. But the underwater volcano has made national news recently after research suggested it is likely nearing its first eruption in 10 years.
The mountain is located around 300 miles off the northern Oregon coast, where the Pacific and Juan de Fuca plates meet — 4,600 feet below the surface.
'It's on an ocean spreading center, which is on one side of the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate, and the other side is the side that's subducting beneath the subduction zone,' William Wilcock, a University of Washington professor researching the volcano, told McClatchy in a phone call.
The volcano has erupted three times since 1998, with the most recent one in 2015. Recently, researchers have noticed that magma build-up has caused the volcano to inflate to near the levels seen in previous eruptions.
'The model that Bill Chadwick, who's at Oregon State University, and Scott Nooner at North Carolina, Wilmington, they basically observed… So there have been eruptions in 1998, 2011 and 2015. And they noted that the eruption in 2011 occurred at about the same amount of inflation,' Wilcock said.
If the theory is correct, it will provide insight into how researchers can predict other volcanic eruptions, Wilcock said.
'Why this volcano is interesting is the magma chamber beneath the volcano is pretty shallow. It's less than a mile deep… I think this volcano behaves in a more simple way than other volcanoes. So I think other volcanoes, they're not as predictable like this,' Wilcock said.
Another key indicator of when the volcano will erupt is seismic activity.
At the time of a UW news release in late April, the volcano was seeing around 200 to 300 earthquakes a day on average, with that number reaching 1,000 some days. That's well below the 2,000 earthquake-a-day average that it was seeing in the lead-up to its last eruption, and Wilcock said there's actually been a decrease in seismic activity.
'That's actually gone down a little bit down to more like between 100 to 200 a day at the moment, but it varies from week to week,' Wilcock said.
According to Wilcock, he expects the number of earthquakes a day to reach 500 before the volcano erupts.
'Over that six months, the number increased from basically 500 a day to 2,000 a day,' Wilcock said. 'And so we're not at 2000 a day at the moment, but then it was inflating at two feet a year. Now it's inflating more slowly. So we might not expect quite as many, but I think I would expect at least 500 a day.'
According to Wilcock, experts expect the volcano to erupt sometime this year or next year, but that it's difficult to pinpoint exactly when
'I think, based on the seismicity, we think it might be a little further away than the other predictions… But I think everybody would say that if it's not going to go this year, it's probably next year,' Wilcock said.
While a volcanic eruption and thousands of earthquakes a day off the coast of northern Oregon might sound frightening, Wilcock said the volcano is too far away from land for its effects to be noticeable.
'These earthquakes are really small,' Wilcock said. 'They're magnitude twos and threes. It's a very small effect, and so it's not going to have any impact in the subduction zone 300 miles away.'
Additionally, seismic activity around the volcano isn't linked to seismic activity on land, so it isn't expected to trigger any earthquakes in Washington or Oregon.
It will have an effect on the marine ecosystem, but Wilcock said that the impacted species will recover quickly.
'When it erupts, you know, many of those are many of those, the bigger organisms we kill, but they will repopulate pretty quickly,' Wilcock said. 'Then the nutrients that come out of the volcano are actually very good for the microbial community.'

The toxic algae bloom off the Southern California coast that's been killing and sickening so many sea lions and other marine mammals has finally ended. "Our demoic acid toxic hostess event is over, for the time being," biologist Dave Bader said. Bader, who works for San Pedro's Marine Mammal Care Center, said recent samples of the ocean water do not show signs of the algae that create the toxic domoic acid bloom that has been afflicting sea lions, dolphins, pelicans and even whales over the past three months. "It's been rough," Bader said. "We've seen so many animals." For those three months, Bader and his team have triaged and treated thousands of animals that were seizing, dying or dead on beaches from Ventura to Orange County. Rescue centers shared the burden and pain during the toxic algae bloom. "It's not just the volume of animals," Bader said. "The females were pregnant, almost all of them, they all aborted their young ... Also, there were so many dolphins this time around as well, which is also tragic. So to see the volume of animals, the types of animals that are coming in, it was really hard on everybody." Typically, the algae blooms begin in June. However, this round of domoic acid spread began much earlier and has the possibility of returning later this year, according to Bader. "We still have another several months when a bloom of this type could reoccur," he said. Bader said humans created this crisis, and can ultimately solve it. "We need to do a better job of mitigating against the future effects of climate change, making it not as bad as it could be. That's step number one," he said. "It's a big step that we have to take. The ocean is telling us it's not well, it's not healthy, and we have to take those big steps to solve problems like this."

Researchers confirm preservatives used in todays' preserved wood won't contaminate soil or rainwater runoff

Oregon State University study proves preservatives stay in the wood, protecting it from decay and insect attack, not leaching into soil or rainwater runoff 'The study confirms the preservative in pressure-treated wood used by consumers will stay right where it belongs, protecting the wood from decay and insect damage, not leaching into the environment.'— Dr. Gerald Presley, Oregon State University VANCOUVER, WA, UNITED STATES, June 3, 2025 / / -- Researchers at Oregon State University have confirmed decks built with today's pressure-treated preserved wood products cause no environmental harm from preservative chemicals leaching from the wood and into rainwater or surrounding soil. The researchers collected runoff and soil samples the first and fourth years after construction of a deck built with wood pressure treated with Copper Azole (CA-C), the preservative used to treat the preserved wood sold for decks and other residential projects. The deck is located in Oregon's Willamette Valley, where rainfall measures 40-60 inches each year. Sampling began with the first rains after the deck surface was completed in October 2021. Samples were analyzed for concentrations of copper, the primary active ingredient in CA-C. The highest copper concentrations were found in samples taken at the very start of the study, shortly after the deck was completed. According to lead researcher Dr. Gerald Presley, that was to be expected. 'Those higher initial levels are due to residual surface deposits of preservative not fully absorbed into the wood fiber washing off with the rain,' he explained. 'But even those highest copper concentrations were quite low.' Within a few months, Presley said, the copper concentrations in rainwater runoff samples stabilized to well below one part per million (ppm). Similarly, copper levels in soil samples taken from directly beneath the deck and points downslope from the deck were indistinguishable from those taken upslope from the deck. 'Two years in, samples from below the deck did not differ from other locations. We could not detect any copper increase resulting from the preserved wood deck,' Presley stated. Copper in soil samples ranged from 50.3 ppm to 54.4 ppm, well within the normal range for background copper levels in the Willamette Valley and significantly below the 140 ppm threshold the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality considers to be 'elevated.' OSU researchers returned to the deck in its fourth year of service to sample rainwater runoff again. In samplings taken during the fall of 2024, copper concentrations were dramatically lower than the already low concentrations found in the initial sampling. The average copper concentration of all runoff samples collected in the fourth year was well below 0.5 ppm. These data prove that preservative loss from preserved wood decking remains negligible as the structure ages. Presley said the study confirms that preservatives in pressure-treated wood used by consumers will stay right where they belong, protecting the wood from decay and insect damage. The study's results refute concerns often voiced on the internet and elsewhere about the dangers of preservatives from preserved wood polluting the environment. 'Often lost to these unfounded fears are the many benefits of using preserved wood,' said Butch Bernhardt, executive director of Western Wood Preservers Institute (WWPI). 'The wood is sustainable, renewable and easy to maintain. Thanks to pressure treating with preservatives, those decks and other projects can last for decades in place.' Bernhardt said the wood deck study and an earlier OSU research project confirming the safety of preserved wood garden boxes offer science-based answers to questions consumers have about using preserved wood. 'Some people have concerns. We get that, it's only natural,' he said. 'The takeaway from these studies is there's no reason to be worried about the preservatives causing damage. People can relax and appreciate the natural warmth, long life and simple enjoyment these preserved wood decks and garden boxes have to offer.' Initial findings from Dr. Presley's deck study, Monitoring metal migration from a pressure-treated and sealed deck, were published in the Proceedings of the International Research Group on Wood Protection in 2024. The complete peer-reviewed study is expected to be published later this year. Dr. Presley, PhD, is an assistant professor in Oregon State University's Dept. of Wood Science and Engineering.
