Proactiv, La Roche-Posay recall acne treatments over cancer-causing chemical
Acne products, including from popular skincare brands like Proactiv and La Roche-Posay are listed in the latest recall notice from the Food and Drug Administration due to possible benzene contamination.
Walgreens, Target, and Amazon are among the retailers who sold the items in Ohio and around the United States.
Benzene, a chemical used in dyes, detergents, and some plastics, was found in the acne products, raising concerns about elevated levels of benzene in certain acne products containing benzoyl peroxide. Exposure to benzene can increase the risk of cancer, per the FDA.

The FDA recalled acne products that bear the following lot numbers and expiration dates:

The recalled acne products were sold at stores such as CVS, Walgreens, Walmart and Target, and through online sellers like Amazon. According to the FDA, these products are recalled at the retail level, meaning that retailers are to remove them from the shelves as well as online.
The FDA notes that retailers were instructed to remove products from shelves and online marketplaces, "but does not specifically instruct consumers to take actions regarding products currently in their possession." The agency adds that even with daily use of these products for decades, "the risk of a person developing cancer because of exposure to benzene found in these products is very low," but could still carry potential risks associated with use.
Consumers who experience issues should report them to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program by submitting a form online or faxing the downloaded report form to 1-800-FDA-0178.

Michigan opioid overdose deaths expected to drop for third straight year
Opioid overdose deaths in Michigan are projected to drop in 2024, marking the third consecutive year of decline, according to the state's attorney general's office. Data from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services shows a 34% reduction in overdose deaths between 2023 and 2024, which is around 1,000 fewer deaths, state officials said. The death rate from 2022 to 2023 decreased by 5.7% from 2,998 to 2,826. The state credits the three-year decline to investments in prevention, treatment, recovery and harm-reduction efforts, funded in part by national opioid settlements. "Since 2019, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has helped secure more than $1.6 billion in settlements for Michigan governments from companies such as McKinsey & Co, Distributors Cardinal Health, McKesson, Inc., and AmerisourceBergen, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Teva Pharmaceutical, Allergan Pharmaceutical, CVS, Walmart and Walgreens," the attorney general's office said in a news release on Thursday. In August 2024, the state projected it would see more than $1 billion from opioid settlement payments over the next 20 years or so. The attorney's office says the majority of settlement funds are distributed equally between local governments and Michigan's Opioid Healing and Recovery Fund, which was created by lawmakers in 2022 to hold funds from opioid settlements. Michigan's Opioids Task Force has distributed more than 1.3 million naloxone kits as a result of the funding, with nearly 34,000 of those kits used to reverse overdoses, the state says. In April, local organizations in Livingston County were developing proposals on how to spend around $9 million in opioid settlement funds. Food recall: Brown eggs sold at grocery stores across California have salmonella risk
A California company is recalling 1.7 million cartons of brown eggs — sold at stores including Walmart in nine states including California — because the eggs may be contaminated with salmonella bacteria. August Egg Company of Hilmar is recalling 1,700,000 dozen brown cage-free and brown certified organic eggs for potential salmonella risk. The eggs were distributed over the last four months, some with sell by dates as late as June 19, according to the recall notice from the Food and Drug Administration. The eggs are linked to an ongoing Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak in seven states, in which 79 people have been sickened and at least 21 hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most of the people sickened (63) live in California, according to the CDC. Nevada and Washington reported four illnesses each, with additional cases in Arizona (3), New Jersey (2), Nebraska (2), Kentucky (1). Ill people in Kentucky, New Jersey, and Washington reported traveling to California and Nevada before they got sick. Most of those sickened (90%) reported eating eggs, the CDC said. Some samples taken by the FDA during an inspection at August Egg Company's processing facility tested positive for the strain of salmonella similar to those related to the persons sickened in the outbreak, the CDC said. August Egg Co. said its internal food safety team is conducting its own investigation to "identify what measures can be established to prevent this situation from recurring," the company said in a statement accompanying the recall. 'It is important to know that when our processing plant identified this concern, we immediately began diverting all eggs from the plant to an egg-breaking facility, which pasteurizes the eggs and kills any pathogens." Eggs with sell-by dates to June 19: Through May 6, eggs with those sell-by dates were distributed to Walmart locations in California, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Wyoming, New Mexico, Nebraska, Indiana and Illinois. August Egg Co. said consumers can identify the recalled eggs by the plant code on one side of the egg carton. They can return the eggs to the place of purchase for a refund. Salmonella causes about 1.35 million illnesses, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths each year in the U.S., according to the CDC and FDA. Symptoms of salmonella infection – including diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps – typically arise six hours to six days after exposure and may last 4 to 7 days. Severe infections can also include aches, headaches, elevated fever, lethargy, rashes, and blood in the urine or stool. Salmonella poisoning, also known as salmonellosis, is a common gastrointestinal infection in California, with about 5,000 confirmed cases annually, according to the California Department of Public Health. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that around 3,000 people die from a foodborne illness, and of those about 420 people die from Salmonella infections.
