Luka Doncic agrees to long-term contract extension with Lakers
But that will not be happening. On Saturday, the first day he was eligible to do so, he agreed to a three-year, $165 extension, per ESPN.
"Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic has agreed to a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension, with a player option in 2028, agent Bill Duffy of WME Basketball told ESPN," wrote Shams Charania.
"The critical new deal keeps Doncic out of free agency next summer, eliminating his 2026-27 player option in place of the new contract."
This extension puts the 26-year-old in position for an even bigger payday in a few years.
"Doncic could opt out in 2028 and sign a new deal for 35% of the salary cap, which projects to five years and $417 million. In doing so, Doncic would recoup all the money lost when he was traded by the Dallas Mavericks, with whom he had been eligible to sign a five-year, $315 million supermax extension this summer."
Doncic played well as a member of the Lakers this past season, but he was clearly out of shape and a bit hobbled. However, once they were knocked out of the first round of the playoffs, he instantly embarked on a physical transformation that has had everyone talking lately.
Some people around the league feel that, as a result of his new physique, Doncic could be ready to put forth an MVP campaign this coming season.

"He was very, very wrong" - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar refuted Magic Johnson's take on LeBron breaking his scoring record
"He was very, very wrong" - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar refuted Magic Johnson's take on LeBron breaking his scoring record originally appeared on Basketball Network. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson were more than just a pair of teammates. They became very good friends, even like brothers, as their careers went on. But even family members don't agree on something at one point. Such was the case when Magic said that it would be a bitter pill to swallow for Kareem once LeBron James broke his all-time scoring record. Not only would The Cap give up the all-time scoring leader crown to The King, but he'd be handing it over to another player who also donned the Los Angeles Lakers' iconic Purple and Gold. "I love Earvin and, after forty years of friendship, he knows me pretty well," Abdul-Jabbar said. "But, in this case, he was very, very wrong. I don't blame him for thinking that I might be bothered because he knows how competitive I used to be. And, if someone had broken my record within ten years of me setting it, he would probably be right. I might have hobbled out of retirement just to add a few more points on my record. But that ain't me today. I'm 75. The only time I ever think of the record is when someone brings it up." Social legacy over basketball legacy Kareem was an aloof guy, but if anyone knew him well, it was Magic, who was his teammate for a decade with the Showtime Lakers and with whom he won five NBA championships. However, although they remained good friends after retirement, Magic stayed in the limelight and focused on his business. Meanwhile, Kareem chose a much quieter and simpler life. Since his retirement, Abdul-Jabbar has occupied himself with social activism and used his college degree from UCLA to the fullest, becoming a best-selling writer on various genres, including social issues, fiction and, of course, history. "Here's the main reason I don't care that much about my record being broken," Kareem went on. "I'm no longer focused on my basketball legacy as much as I am on my social legacy. I'm not trying to build a billion-dollar empire, I write articles in defense of democracy and advocating on behalf of the marginalized."Kareem was in attendance when LeBron broke his record As for LeBron, Kareem admitted that while he had taken a few jabs at him in the past, those were minor, petty matters that weren't worth holding a grudge over, especially when weighed against the significance of James breaking the record that stood for almost four decades. "This is all about LeBron doing something no one else has done, about scoring more points than anyone has been able to in 75 years. There are no "yeah, buts," just praise where it is rightfully and righteously due. Bottom line about LeBron and me: LeBron makes me love the game again. And he makes me proud to be part of an ever-widening group of athletes who actively care about their community," Abdul-Jabbar concluded. Kareem made it clear that there was nothing between him and LeBron despite what people thought because of their lack of a relationship. And even after clearly saying that on paper, he proved he meant what he said by being there when LeBron broke his record. For most players, that might have been, as Magic put it, "a tough pill to swallow." But for someone like Kareem, who always prided himself in being a bigger (quite literally) man, it was simply part of the story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Aug 4, 2025, where it first appeared.

LeBron James' Absence From Luka Doncic's Contract Announcement Sparks Buzz
LeBron James' Absence From Luka Doncic's Contract Announcement Sparks Buzz originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In a move that can only be described as one of the biggest of the offseason, the Los Angeles Lakers were able to sign Luka Doncic to an extension. The deal, worth $165 million, keeps Doncic in Los Angeles for three more years before he is due for a five-year, $400 million-plus deal in 2028, according to The Athletic. While this was a monumental day for the Lakers, who traded for Doncic in February, there was one player noticeably absent at Doncic's press conference. Four-time NBA MVP LeBron James was not among the players photographed in attendance on Saturday NBA Fans Had Plenty of Thoughts After Noticing LeBron James' Lack of Attendance In a photo shared to X, players such as Maxi Kleber, Marcus Smart, Gabe Vincent, Deandre Ayton and Rui Hachimura were seen smiling alongside Doncic. While it was a big day for Doncic and the Lakers, many fans flooded to the comment section to call out James. "Except LeBron," pointed out one fan. "Ofc LeBron isn't there, he to busy training at the clippers facility," joked another. "While lebron playing golf in fog," said another. "no bron," asked a fourth. "LeDrama notably absent…Shocker," commented another. Why Was LeBron James Not at Luka Doncic's Contract Extension Press Conference? While Austin Reaves also wasn't pictured along with a handful of other players, James' absence spoke volumes on how this offseason has gone for him and the Lakers. It's unclear what course he was playing, but James shared multiple videos of himself on a golf course drenched in fog. James has also yet to comment on Doncic's extension to the media or even acknowledge it on social media. LeBron James Trade Rumors In June, James' agent Rich Paul told ESPN's Shams Charania that the Lakers seemed to have a different mindset than the 40-year-old star. "LeBron wants to compete for a championship," Paul told ESPN. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career." Following this comment, James was spotted at the Cleveland Cavaliers' facility on July 4. James did address the photo upon its virality, expressing that he lives in Cleveland part-time. However, this wasn't the only time he was spotted working out at a facility associated with another team. This past week, he shared photos on Instagram of himself working out in front of the Los Angeles Clippers logo. While it was later confirmed that Klutch Sports now owns the facility, which used to belong to the Clippers, it's hard to imagine that James wasn't hoping to elicit some sort of reaction with the photos. What's Next for LeBron James? It's unclear if James actually wants to be traded or is just toying with the Lakers, but for the first time in his career, he doesn't really have any leverage. He opted into his $52.6 million player option in June, which makes his asking price via a trade or buyout extremely unreasonable. In addition to the fact that he chose to pick up the option, the Lakers don't have to trade him if they don't want to. Not to mention, ESPN's Bobby Marks reported one day after he picked up his option that there isn't a market for the aging star. So, whether he likes it or not, it appears James will continue to be a Laker. He also may owe Doncic an apology for missing his big story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 2, 2025, where it first appeared.

Luka Doncic Makes Bold Statement on Body After Criticism Following Lakers Trade
Luka Doncic Makes Bold Statement on Body After Criticism Following Lakers Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It has only been a little less than three months since the Lakers were eliminated from the NBA playoffs by the Timberwolves, but for star guard Luka Doncic, things have already changed. Notably, his body -- Doncic has been putting in extra work to firm up his conditioning, which was so long a point of contention in Dallas and one of the reasons the Mavericks traded him at last February's NBA deadline. In an interview with Men's Health magazine, Doncic says he is already well into the process of transforming himself. 'Just visually, I would say my whole body looks better,' he told the magazine. Of course, this is not the first time we've seen an offseason story about a player getting into the best shape of his life. It's an annual rite in the NBA, and in any sport, and it's especially applied to Doncic, who has been a five-time All-NBA player in his six years in the league despite not being in tip-top shape. Doncic, according to the magazine, has been working out in Croatia and adhering to a "gluten-free, low-sugar diet," and is working with his fitness team to follow through on his commitment to conditioning. That has come into clear focus following the controversial trade out of Dallas. 'So every summer I try my best to work on different things," he says. "Obviously, I'm very competitive. This summer was just a little bit different, you know. It kind of motivated me to be even better.' He also says he is motivated by the examples of two other all-time great players, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, who were known for their incomparable and demanding workout regimens. 'MJ and Kobe, you know, they really did a lot in their careers,' he says. 'They sacrificed a lot.' Doncic added that his focus is on condition rather than athleticism, which has never been his strength. But there are still ways he can be effective without that. 'Not everything is jumping high,' he says. 'I think I'm very athletic in other stuff. Balancing, controlling my body, what I do when I stop, slowing down.' Doncic has made progress, he said. But he also said he's just beginning. 'Obviously, be the best that I can be, take care of myself,' he says. 'This year, with my team, I think we did a huge step. But this is just the start, you know. I need to keep going. Can't stop.' This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 28, 2025, where it first appeared.
