On this day: stone carver unveils forest scene at Flower Show

Yahoo27-04-2025

On this day in 2024, the York Press reported that a York-based stone carver had unveiled his latest creation at the Harrogate Flower Show.
Anthony Bartyla, of Raven and Hare Sculpture, crafted a forest scene featuring a fox and pheasant at sunset.
The piece was set to be displayed at the show on the day of reporting (Saturday, April 27, 2024), and the following day.
Mr Bartyla said at the time: "I've always been arty, but around the age of 30, I just discovered I can do this, and these shows give me a great chance to showcase my work."
Despite usually using stone from Tadcaster Quarry (the same stone used at the Minster), this sculpture was made from Portland stone.
The sculpture was "likely to last for 250 years and longer still if kept out of the elements," according to this paper at the time.
Mr Bartyla completed the sculpture over four days in a public display in Parliament Street, York.
He said: "I had an idea of a little woodland path, then created the trees and flowers to show the sculpture.
"The only thing I'm waiting for is some handmade glass to make it more sunset – that's the only thing that'll change.
"I'd like to see it mounted so it glows when the sunset hits it."
Mr Bartyla expressed a wish to sell enough of his work to fund his admission to a course at the Florence School of Art, where he would learn to sculpt in the style of the Florentine masters.

Greg Ito Transforms Rockefeller Center with 'The Enlightenment'

Summary Los Angeles-based artistGreg Itohas taken overRockefeller CenterwithThe Enlightenment, a vibrant public exhibition presented in partnership withArt Production Fundas part of the Art in Focus program. On view from June 2, the multi-site installation features paintings, sculptures, dioramas and photographic works that draw from personal memory and themes of transformation. Ito began many of the featured paintings during the California wildfires, layering symbols like flames, flowers, doorways and the setting sun to reflect cycles of destruction and renewal. At 45 Rockefeller Plaza, Ito transforms street-facing vitrines into sculptural installs, each one framed by windows and infused with cinematic lighting that shifts from day to twilight. Nearby, a 125-foot panoramic vinyl wraps the lower-level rink space with a narrative sequence blending staged photography and painted visuals. This marks the first time Ito's painting and photography are shown side by side in such a public setting. Elements of the exhibition also appear across multiple Rockefeller buildings, reinforcing the storytelling with recurring motifs. As part of the programming, a free interactive children's workshop will take place on June 26 from 2–5pm, co-hosted by Ito and Art Production Fund, supported by Enlightenmentis on view through August 29. We did our gender reveal at 30,000 feet with complete strangers — it was the best decision of our lives

These expecting parents pulled off their epic gender reveal with flying colors. Temporarily turning the friendly skies pink and blue, a couple, Katrín María Blöndal, 24, and Anton Örn Hilmarsson, 27, hosted a celebration — attended by complete strangers — to toast their incoming infant during a flight to Paris. 'This might be the first time in history that someone finds out the gender of their baby somewhere over the North Atlantic,' a flight attendant with Iceland's PLAY Airlines announced to a cabin full of excited passengers-turned-partygoers. Air travelers held up small pink or blue cards, indicating their best guesses on the baby's gender, per Instagram footage of the super-fly fête. Katrín and Anton, from Reykjavik, Iceland, then made their way to the front of the plane, where a customized cake, topped with decorative baby elephants and edible pearls, and Champagne flutes were waiting. The pair, already parents of two young sons and a daughter from previous relationships, used the glasses to scoop into the confection, which boasted a thick layer of blue frosting — revealing that their little love-to-be is a boy. 'We couldn't have imagined a more perfect way to find out — we're having a boy,' Katrín and Anton said in a statement to The Post. The sweethearts began dating in January 2024, after years of close friendship. Anton works as a forklift operator for a pharmaceutical company, and Katrín is in school studying Education and Pedagogy. 'This is our first child together,' they added, 'and to have the big reveal take place in the sky was unforgettable.' It's a memorable milestone that many mommies and daddies like to mark in a major way. While some posh pregnant people prefer to learn the sex of their buns in the oven with $20,000 Birkin bags, others, such as Florida-based foodie Rosanna Fontana, favor meatballs as their gender reveal goodies. Then, of course, there are daredevils like influencer Lele Pons, who detonated faux TNT to explosively determine whether she'd soon be welcoming a son or daughter. The splashiness of a baby-themed bomb notwithstanding, Katrín and Anton are content with their slightly more discreet shindig at 30,000 feet. 'We're incredibly grateful to the crew for making this such a special flight,' the twosome told The Post. 'We'll never forget.'
