Israel kills at least 30 Palestinians in Gaza, including aid seekers

Al Jazeera23-06-2025
At least 30 people have been killed in various Israeli attacks as the military relentlessly pounds the besieged enclave, medical sources say, with the overall Palestinian death toll in the war nearing a staggering 56,000.
Those killed on Monday include at least 13 aid seekers who lost their lives while desperately trying to access food for their families at distribution centres run by the controversial United States- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which the United Nations has condemned for its 'weaponisation' of aid.
The killings are the latest in a wave of daily carnage, targeting hungry Palestinians who continue to make the perilous journey to the food distribution points. Critics have slammed the sites as 'human slaughterhouses' amid a worsening hunger and looming famine crisis.
Israeli attacks on Palestinians near aid centres have killed more than 400 people and wounded about 1,000 since the GHF began distributions on May 27.
Al Jazeera's Hani Mahmoud, reporting from Gaza City, said Israel is engaged in its conflict with Iran while it also continues 'the killing of Palestinians across the Gaza Strip with deadly air strikes on tents or residential homes'.
'Hungry crowds gather at food distribution centres in Rafah or the Netzarim Corridor. So far, 13 aid seekers have been shot dead today. They are among 30 people killed by Israel's military since the early hours,' Mahmoud said.
Meanwhile, the Wafa news agency reported that at least four people were killed and several others wounded by an Israeli air attack on a residential building in northern Gaza's Jabalia.
Three others, all brothers, were killed by Israeli forces while they were inspecting their damaged home in the al-Salateen area of Beit Lahiya, in northern Gaza.
In central Gaza, al-Awda Hospital in the Nuseirat refugee camp announced it had received the bodies of two Palestinians and treated 35 others injured in Israeli strikes on crowds gathered along Salah al-Din Street.
Sixteen of the wounded were in critical condition and transferred to other hospitals in the central governorate, Wafa said.
Israeli artillery also shelled the Shujayea neighbourhood in eastern Gaza City.
The latest casualty figures bring the number of people killed in the territory since the start of Israel's 20-month war to 55,998, with at least 131,559 wounded.
Energy crisis
The attacks come as the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) warned that the lack of reliable energy sources is a key threat to survival in Gaza.
The 'deliberate denial of energy access', like electricity and fuel, 'undermines fundamental human needs' in the enclave, the NRC said in a new report.
Israel has maintained a crippling aid blockade on Gaza, sealing vital border crossings, and preventing the entry of aid spanning from food, to medical supplies and much-needed fuel.
'In Gaza, energy is not about convenience – it's about survival,' Benedicte Giaever, executive director of NORCAP, which is part of NRC, said.
'When families can't cook, when hospitals go dark and when water pumps stop running, the consequences are immediate and devastating. The international community must prioritise energy in all humanitarian efforts,' she added.
NRC's report noted that without power, healthcare facilities in Gaza have been adversely affected, with emergency surgeries having to be delayed, and ventilators, incubators and dialysis machines unable to function.

More than 100 groups blast Israel's ‘weaponisation of aid' as Gaza starves

More than 100 aid groups have accused Israel of obstructing life-saving aid from entering Gaza, resulting in vast quantities of relief supplies remaining stranded in warehouses across Jordan and Egypt as more Palestinians starve. Aid trucks have massed on Gaza's borders amid Israel's blockade of the famine-stricken territory, and new rules are being used by Israel to deny the entry of food, medicine, water and temporary shelters, the groups said in a joint statement released on Thursday. 'Despite claims by Israeli authorities that there is no limit on humanitarian aid entering Gaza, most major international NGOs [nongovernmental organisations] have been unable to deliver a single truck of life-saving supplies since 2 March,' the groups said. 'Instead of clearing the growing backlog of goods, Israeli authorities have rejected requests from dozens of NGOs to bring in life-saving goods, citing that these organisations are 'not authorised to deliver aid',' the groups, which include Doctors Without Borders (known by their French acronym, MSF) and Oxfam, said. Relief organisations that have worked in Gaza for decades are now told by Israel that they are not 'authorised' to deliver aid due to new 'registration rules', which include so-called 'security' vetting. Hospitals in Gaza are now without basic supplies as a result, and children, the elderly and those with disabilities are 'dying from hunger and preventable illnesses', the statement continued. Bushra Khalidi, Oxfam policy lead, said her organisation has more than $2.5m worth of humanitarian aid supplies that 'have been rejected from entering Gaza by Israel'. MSF's emergency coordinator in Gaza, Aitor Zabalgogeazkoa, said the restrictions on aid are part of Israel's militarised distribution of relief supplies, spearheaded by the notorious GHF. 'The militarised food distribution scheme has weaponised starvation and curated suffering. Distributions at GHF sites have resulted in extreme levels of violence and killings, primarily of young Palestinian men, but also of women and children, who have gone to the sites in the hope of receiving food,' Zabalgogeazkoa said. At least 859 Palestinians have been killed attempting to access aid supplies around GHF distribution sites since May. The more than 100 relief organisations that signed the statement have called for pressure to be exerted on Israel to end its 'weaponisation of aid', for Israel to end its 'bureaucratic obstruction' and for unconditional delivery of life-saving humanitarian aid to Gaza. Israel's Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli, who had a role in the new rules imposed on aid groups, told the AFP news agency that registration of humanitarian groups could be rejected if Israeli authorities deem that its activities deny the democratic character of Israel or ' promote delegitimisation campaigns', such as the movement to boycott Israel over its war on Gaza. The joint outcry by aid groups comes as Israeli forces launch a new operation to take over Gaza City, which will displace more than a million people and force them to move south to concentration zones. Israel's operation to occupy Gaza City has triggered international outrage, with the United Nations and world leaders warning of devastating humanitarian consequences for the war-shattered territory.

Israel pounds Gaza, kills 123 in 24 hours

Agencies At least 123 Palestinians, including 21 people seeking aid, have been killed and 437 others were injured in Israeli attacks across Gaza in the past 24 hour reporting period, according to the Health Ministry in the besieged territory. In the same period, at least eight people, including three children, died from Israeli-imposed starvation and malnutrition, bringing the total number of hunger-related deaths since the war began in October, 2023 to 235, among them 106 children, the ministry said on Wednesday. Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), described the deaths as 'the latest in the war on children and childhood in Gaza'. 'This is in addition to: over 40,000 children reported killed or injured due to bombardment and airstrikes, at least 17,000 unaccompanied and separated children, and one million deeply traumatised children and out of education,' he wrote in a post on X. 'Children are children. No one should stay silent when children die, or are brutally deprived of a future, wherever these children are, including in Gaza.'Gaza's healthcare system has also been the subject of targeted destruction by the Israel military, which amounts to 'medicide,' UN experts said on Wednesday, accusing Israel of deliberately attacking and starving healthcare workers, paramedics and hospitals to wipe out medical care in the enclave. 'As human beings and UN experts, we cannot remain silent about the war crimes committed before our eyes in Gaza,' said Tlaleng Mofokeng, special rapporteur on the right to health and Francesca Albanese, special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967. 'In addition to bearing witness to an ongoing genocide we are also bearing witness to a 'medicide,' a sinister component of the intentional creation of conditions calculated to destroy Palestinians in Gaza which constitutes an act of genocide,' the experts said. 'Health and care workers have been continuously targeted, detained, tortured and are now, like the rest of the population, being starved,' they added. As the death toll continues to rise in Gaza, a delegation from the Palestinian group Hamas was scheduled to begin discussions in Egypt over a potential ceasefire on Wednesday. The previous round of indirect ceasefire talks in Qatar ended in deadlock in late July, after Israel and the United States withdrew their delegations hours after Hamas submitted its response to a truce proposal. The talks in Cairo will focus on ways to stop the war, deliver aid, and 'end the suffering of our people in Gaza', Hamas official Taher Al Nono said. A Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations told the news agency Reuters that 'Hamas believes negotiation is the only way to end the war and is open to discuss any ideas that would secure an end to the war'. A Hamas representative also told Reuters the group was willing to hand over governance of Gaza to a non-partisan committee, but would not give up its weapons before a Palestinian state is established. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised to continue the war until Hamas is 'destroyed'. Israel's security cabinet last week approved plans to take control of Gaza City, despite international condemnation from the United Nations and dissent from within Israel's own military.
