What makes a Mani Ratnam film?

When the crowd settles, the light dims, the dreamy shaft of ray hits the screen, and the words appear, "A film by Mani Ratnam," it is not to announce the creators name but to remind you that what is in store is a singular vision. Characters speak in hushed tones and with poetic minimalism, themes rich enough to rival mythology, a vivid and honest dissection of modern relationships, the powers that make and unmake them, and frames lit with intent and precision, these are but some aspects which are unmistakably Mani Ratnam.
With a rich and versatile filmography that extends across decades, Mani Ratnam keeps reinventing himself. From capturing how blossoms even within the mechanical shackles of an arranged marriage system in Mouna Raagam to portraying the chaotic trepidations inherent in a live-in relationship in O Kaadhal Kanmani, the director evolves with the times. However, like Van Gogh captures a starry night and a weat field with the same colours, Mani Ratnam captures his evolving ideas through his signature vision. A vision that makes him one of the greatest autuers of Indian cinema. But, as curious rays of carefully selected photons make up the shaft of light inside a theatre, Mani Ratnam's vision is made up of several distinct characteristics. And here we try to unravel some.

Sonali Bendre On Why She Received Michael Jackson At Mumbai Airport: 'Raj Thackeray's Wife...'

Last Updated: Sonali Bendre said she received great tickets for the music legend's Mumbai concert. Sonali Bendre is the only Bollywood actress to have had the opportunity to welcome the late pop sensation Michael Jackson when he visited India for his 'HIStory World Tour' in 1996. Actress Sonali Bendre, along with politician Raj Thackeray, played a key role in the grand welcome of Michael Jackson to India in 1996. Bendre was dressed in a traditional nine-yard saree and greeted Jackson at the Mumbai airport with an Indian ritual by applying tilak (a sacred mark on the forehead) and performing aarti. Now, nearly 29 years later, Sonali Bendre has opened up about the behind-the-scenes events that led her to be a part of that iconic moment. In an interview with ANI, the 'Sarfarosh' actress said that she was approached by Raj Thackeray's wife, Sharmila Thackeray, for the welcoming ceremony of Michael Jackson at the Mumbai Airport (Bombay Airport at that time). 'They told me that you need to come and do that and be somebody who got in touch with me. I think it was Sharmila, Raj's wife. Sharmila's mother and my masi (aunt) have been friends for a long time, and she said, 'Why don't you do it?' (welcoming Michael Jackson)," said Sonali Bendre. However, it was not so easy to convince the actress who was at the peak of her career at that time. She agreed to welcome Jackson at the airport, but only on one condition. 'I was like, okay, but then I want great tickets for the show and all of that with my friends. So I did it because I was getting these tickets to enter where I could take my friends and go to the show. My sister, sister's friends and all of that. We had this great seating. That's what I was so excited about when I did it," added Sonali Bendre. The 'HIStory World Tour' included Jackson visiting numerous countries and performing for millions of fans. Jackson's concert in Mumbai was a highlight of the tour, as it is fondly remembered for his cultural moment in India. At the time, Sonali Bendre was enjoying a successful run in Bollywood. After a series of early struggles, 1996 proved to be a breakthrough year for the actress as she starred in hits like 'Diljale', 'Sapoot' and 'Rakshak'. Sonali Bendre's diverse filmography includes hit films like 'Aag', 'Sarfarosh', 'Keemat', 'Hum Saath Saath Hain', 'Indra', 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' and others. First Published: June 07, 2025, 21:04 IST

‘Shah Rukh Khan and I hit it off immediately': Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos on his equation with the Bollywood star

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos opened up about his friendship with Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan. In an interview with Nikhil Kamath, Ted talked about how Shah Rukh was one of the first celebrities he met as soon as he came to India before the release of the OTT platform's first Indian series, Sacred Games, in 2018. (Also Read: Ed Sheeran drops new song Sapphire with desi beats, Arijit Singh vocals. All Shah Rukh Khan fans care about is his cameo) Ted was asked to name an Indian celebrity who's his 'favourite' and he said that he shares a good equation with Shah Rukh. He recollected, 'Early in coming to India, I met Shah Rukh Khan right away. He hosted a very nice dinner for me, and we hit it off immediately. I've come back since, with my wife, and we've had nice times together. We visited each other in Los Angeles when his son was in school. So, having dinner with Shah Rukh Khan in India is much different than having dinner with him in Los Angeles.' Shah Rukh's son Aryan Khan's The Ba***ds of Bollywood will soon drop on Netflix. In the same interview, Ted mentioned that he was also bowled over by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his 2024 show Heeramandi, which he says felt like a 'dare'. He said, 'Doing Heeramandi was probably one of the most creatively interesting projects I've ever worked on in India. He (Sanjay Leela Bhansali) came in with his very big vision, almost like it was a dare. I dare you to make this, it's so big. And remember, he's a cinema legend. So, the idea that he was gonna make a TV show is almost unheard of. I think he came for us to say no. And when we said yes, it was a complicated production.' Shah Rukh was last seen in the 2023 films Pathaan, Jawan and Dunki. He is now shooting for King, with director Siddharth Anand, his daughter Suhana Khan, and Abhishek Bachchan as his co-stars.

Badshah calls his ‘I'd rather make babies' comment for Dua Lipa a compliment; internet says ‘cover up to theek se karo'

Singer and rapper Badshah recently responded to a fan's query about his collaboration with Dua Lipa. However, his comment about 'making babies' with the global pop icon didn't sit well with a section of social media users, who slammed the singer for it. Now, Badshah has issued a clarification regarding his remark. (Also Read: 'Indian Kanye West': Badshah's 'I'd rather make babies with her' comment for Dua Lipa irks the internet) On Saturday, Badshah took to X (formerly Twitter) and defended his comment about Dua Lipa. He wrote, "I think one of the most beautiful compliments that you could give to a woman that you really admire is to wish for her to mother your children. Meri soch nahi, tumhari soch saamne aayi hai (It's not my thoughts, but your interpretation that's come forward)." However, the internet didn't seem entirely convinced by his clarification. One X user wrote, "Since when did 'rather make babies' start translating into 'I want her to be the mother of my kids' ???" Another commented, "What kind of compliment is this?" A third added, "Bad cover-up, bro." Another comment read, 'Bhai cover up toh theek se karliya karo (At least cover up properly brother).' Earlier, Badshah had taken to X and written, "Dua Lipa ❤️." Reacting to this, a fan asked if he was planning to collaborate with the pop singer. Badshah replied, "I'd rather make babies with her, bro." The singer faced backlash for his comment, with many internet users calling it 'disgusting.' Some even referred to him as the "Indian Kanye West." Meanwhile, Badshah recently sang Gori Hai Kalaiyan along with Kanika Kapoor, Sharvi Yadav, and IP Singh for the film Mere Husband Ki Biwi, which also features Arjun Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar, and Rakul Preet Singh. He is set to perform in the US as part of his The Unfinished Tour. He will kick off the tour in Virginia on September 5, and after performing in New Jersey, the Bay Area, Seattle, and Dallas, he will conclude the tour in Chicago on September 20.
