Pakistani rescuers will try again to reach an injured German climber stranded on a mountain
Laura Dahlmeier, who also won the 2017 women's biathlon World Cup, was seriously injured on Monday while attempting to scale Laila Peak in the Karakoram mountain range.
Another rescue attempt will get underway with the help of helicopters after dawn on Wednesday, according to Faizullah Faraq, a spokesperson for the Gilgit-Baltistan regional government. He could not provide further details on Dahlmeier's condition.
Dahlmeier, 31, and her rope partner, Marina Eva, were struck by falling rocks during their ascent, Faraq said. Eva managed to descend to base camp with help from rescuers on Tuesday.
In Germany, Dahlmeier's management told the broadcaster ZDF that she was seriously injured in the rockfall at an altitude of about 5,700 meters (18,700 feet) around noon on Monday.
'Due to the remoteness of the area, a helicopter was only able to reach the site of the accident on the morning of July 29,' the statement said, expressing hope that news of her rescue would follow soon.
The German news agency dpa said Dahlmeier and Eva were climbing in alpine style when the accident occurred.
Karrar Haidr i, vice president of the Pakistan Alpine Club, told The Associated Press that Dahlmeier sustained 'serious injuries' and that Pakistani military helicopters were helping in coordinated rescue efforts, which started on Monday.
'Efforts to evacuate Dahlmeier by air will continue,' Haidri said.
Hundreds of climbers try to scale mountains in northern Pakistan every year, and accidents are common because of avalanches and sudden weather changes.
Pakistan's scenic north — a draw for both tourists and mountaineers — has been struck with flash floods and landslides following above normal seasonal rains. At least 20 Pakistani tourists are still missing after they were swept away by flood waters last week near the northern Chilas district.

Toronto FC adds to its attack, acquiring Djordje Mihailovic as a designated player
TORONTO – Toronto FC has acquired Djordje Mihailovic from the Colorado Rapids in a cash deal worth up to $9 million (all figures in U.S. dollars), hoping the attacking midfielder will help revive its attack. The transfer cost Toronto $8 million with up to $1 million in conditional cash if certain performance-based metrics are met. Colorado also retains a sell-on percentage if the player is traded or transferred. Mihailovic joins Toronto as a designated player, signing a 3 1/2-year contract through the end of 2028 with a club option for 2029. The Mihailovic transfer is the latest in a line of big moves in Major League Soccer this week with German star Thomas Müller joining the Vancouver Whitecaps from Bayern Munich and South Korean captain Son Heung-Min joining Los Angeles FC from England's Tottenham. At his best, Mihailovic is a game-changer, something Toronto (5-13-6) sorely needs. With 25 goals in 24 games, TFC ranks 26th in the league on offence. Mihailovic can score goals and set them up. The 26-year-old U.S. international has scored 48 goals and added 63 assists in 243 games during a pro career in MLS and Europe. The five-foot-10 153-pounder has 23 goals and 22 assists in 63 appearances in all competitions with Colorado since joining the club as a DP in January 2024. In his first season with the Rapids, he set a club record for most goal contributions in a single season with 11 goals and 14 assists in regular-season play. The Florida native has nine goals and seven assists in 24 regular-season outings for Colorado this year. With 41 MLS goal contributions, Mihailovic surpassed Mark Chung who held the record (38) by a Rapids player in their first two seasons with the club. 'When I first joined the league, Toronto was a powerhouse and I could tell it was one of the best teams in MLS,' said Mihailovic. 'I know the history and potential of this club and where it can go. The way the fans and the entire city rally behind the team is special. I am excited to join Toronto FC. 'After speaking with Jason and (coach) Robin (Fraser), I can sense the ambition from the entire organization to get back to the top of the league, and their vision for this project truly excites me. I am happy to be a part of an environment like this.' Mihailovic can cause teams problems a variety of ways. A reliable penalty-taker (he beat Toronto's Sean Johnson with a perfectly executed Panenka down the middle last September), Mihailovic's dangerous set-piece deliveries will bring a smile to the likes of Toronto's Kevin Long on corners. Mihailovic also has the knack of being in the right place at the right time, able to finding creases in opposing defences. He demonstrated that in March 2024 when he opened his scoring account for Colorado in a 3-2 comeback win over visiting Los Angeles FC. His corner kick set up Canadian Moise Bombito's headed goal before Mihailovic himself scored a brace, with his first goal from a direct kick and the second by acrobatically deflecting the ball in with his thigh. Toronto has been without a DP since buying out the contracts of Italians Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi in early July. Canadian international Theo Corbeanu leads TFC with five goals while Honduran Deybi Flores, a defensive-minded midfielder, tops the team with two assists. Mihailovic was making $1.775 million with the Rapids this season, a bargain compared to the $15.4 million Toronto was paying Insigne and the $6.295 million Bernardeschi was earning. Mihailovic will wear No. 10 for Toronto, following in the footsteps of Bernardeschi, Alejandro Pozuelo, Sebastian Giovinco and Robert Earnshaw. Toronto marks the fifth career team for Mihailovic and his second in Canada. He spent the 2021 and '22 seasons with CF Montreal, playing 61 regular-season games, including 57 starts. In 2021, he recorded 16 assists, erasing the previous club record of 13 set by Ignacio Piatti in 2018. Montreal had acquired Mihailovic from the Chicago Fire in exchange for up to $1 million in general allocation money. Chelsea defender Levi Colwill undergoes ACL surgery
LONDON (AP) — Chelsea defender Levi Colwill could miss a big portion of the upcoming season after undergoing surgery Thursday for a torn ACL. The 22-year-old center-back, a mainstay in Enzo Maresca's lineups last season, sustained the knee injury early this week in pre-season training, the Premier League club said. 'Levi will now begin his recovery and be supported by the club's medical department at Cobham during his rehabilitation phase,' the team said in a statement. The England international made 35 Premier League starts last season for Chelsea, which qualified for the Champions League. Packers RB MarShawn Lloyd remaining upbeat as he continues to deal with injuries
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay Packers running back MarShawn Lloyd says he has leaned on his faith as he deals with the multiple injuries that have kept him off the field for much of his NFL career. That faith is being tested once again. The 2024 third-round pick from Southern California played just one game and carried the ball only six times as a rookie due to a variety of injuries. Now he's dealing with a groin issue that leaves him uncertain about when he will be cleared to practice again. 'Eventually these things will come across and I'll be able to be exactly who I know I can be,' Lloyd said Thursday. 'It will come soon, so I'm excited about it. I've got to keep staying in my faith, and everything's going to roll out the right way.' The Packers want Lloyd and Emanuel Wilson, whose 502 yards rushing last season ranked second on the team, to provide depth behind Pro Bowl running back Josh Jacobs. Wilson has his own issues in dealing with a bone bruise in his knee as the Packers prepare for their preseason opener Saturday against the New York Jets. During his rookie year, Lloyd dealt with injuries to his hamstring and ankle that kept him off the field. He seemed close to coming off injured reserve in November until he started feeling pain in his abdomen, got it checked out and discovered he had appendicitis. The lessons Lloyd learned during that rookie season have prepared him for this latest setback. Lloyd has also benefited from the set up of the Packers' new locker room, which has him right next to three-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Kenny Clark. 'A lot of things I've been going through haven't been long-term things,' Lloyd said. 'I've just got to incorporate different things into my system. Having a guy like Kenny Clark, he told me early in his career, he struggled with some little soft-tissue stuff, so I've just been leaning on him a lot, listening to what he's saying, Pilates, yoga, just different things like that.' And I think mentally he's in a way better place than he was last year. He's understanding what it is and what it takes to play in this league, and he understands there's sometimes hiccups in the road.
