Relentless clay season catches up with Musetti in Paris semi-finals
PARIS, June 6 (Reuters) - A physically and mentally drained Lorenzo Musetti paid a heavy price for his superb claycourt season as he was forced to retire from a gripping French Open semi-final against Carlos Alcaraz on Friday.
The Italian craftsman threw in the towel while trailing 4-6 7-6(3) 6-0 2-0 having bagged the opening set in emphatic fashion, but a growing pain in his left leg eventually put an end to his dream of reaching a maiden Grand Slam final.
"I started feeling this discomfort in the first games of the third set. I tried to manage it, but I felt I was losing more and more strength and power in that muscle, and eventually, I just couldn't keep up in the rallies," the world number seven told a press conference.
"At that point, it was risky to force it — I wasn't able to stay in the match anymore."
Musetti is the only player who this season made it to the last four of every top claycourt event - Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome and Roland Garros - and the efforts he made on a very demanding surface eventually took their toll on court Philippe Chatrier.
"It's been a very, very intense month. It's a month that definitely gave me a lot but also took a lot from me in terms of mental energy," he explained.
"Sometimes constantly digging deep inside yourself can wear out the body, too. But of course, I'm 23, I haven't played 10 years' worth of Slams, so when you go deep in a Slam, it's not always easy to maintain a very high physical level.
"I think from these matches, and even from injuries, you can learn and improve — you have to."
Musetti admitted that Alcaraz pushed him to the limit and hinted his injury might have come from the physicality of the defending champion.
"Definitely, Carlos pushes me to reach my limits — that's what champions do, of course. We all know he's very strong physically, one of the strongest out there, so he builds a lot of his game around his physicality," he said.
"I knew I had to be in good shape to keep up with him. I don't know, maybe it's just a coincidence, but we'll definitely analyse what we could've done, what we can improve."
Musetti will undergo tests on Saturday to determine the exact nature of his injury.

Jannik Sinner ends Novak Djokovic's bid for 25th grand slam at French Open
Djokovic, who turned 38 last month, was bidding to become the oldest winner of a major title. But in Sinner – 15 years his junior – the Serbian was essentially playing a younger, fitter version of himself. It was a high-calibre contest befitting a semi-final between the current world's best player and arguably the greatest of all time. But it was Sinner who won the big moments and came out on top with a 6-4 7-5 7-6 (3) victory. Sinner, who holds the US and Australian Open titles, is now on a 20-match winning streak at grand slams. He will play defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, the second seed, in a blockbuster showdown on Sunday. With Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff the last two women standing, Roland Garros will be the first grand slam to feature the top-two seeds from both the ATP and WTA draws in the finals since the 2013 US Open. Djokovic has won three titles on the Paris clay but the surface was not his friend when Sinner broke in the first set after the ball kicked up violently off the dust and left him swinging at thin air. Early in the second set Djokovic won a spectacular 26-shot rally, the pair exchanging drop shots before the Serb stretched to volley into an open court before milking the applause from the crowd. Djokovic forced a first break point as Sinner served for the set and when the Italian netted a forehand, he was finally breached. But the 23-year-old hit straight back and, after Djokovic received medical treatment on his left thigh at the changeover, he wrapped up the second set. Djokovic kept fighting and had three set points to take it into a fourth in a 10th game, but Sinner wriggled out of that hole and secured victory in the tie-break after three hours and 16 minutes. Once again Djokovic proved he still belongs in the latter stages of the grand slams, but the wait for the milestone 25th title goes on.
