Woman ‘thrilled' after being crowned first Flatpack world champion
A woman has said she is 'thrilled' after becoming the first person to be crowned Flatpack world champion.
The Flatpack World Championships, which is in its first year, saw eight competitors battle it out to build flatpack furniture as speedily as they could, at the opening of Grand Designs Live at ExCel London on Friday.
The contest was split into two rounds and involved participants making bookcases and bedside tables.
Taking a mere nine minutes and 33 seconds to build a bedside table, Hayley McAuley proved she had the speed and determination needed to become a champion.
'It's been a rollercoaster of a morning, and I am absolutely thrilled to have been crowned Flatpack World Champion,' Ms McAuley, from Wigan, said.
'When I first heard about the competition I jumped at the chance to enter as I've always thought I'm a bit of a machine when it comes to building flatpack furniture.
'Everyone truly did a fantastic job.'
Ms McAuley was awarded with a golden Allen key medal and congratulated by Kevin McCloud, who was the host of the event and is best known for presenting Grand Designs.
McCloud said: 'This was great fun and hugely amusing.
'It was wonderful to see who took this seriously, and who accidentally sabotaged their own attempts to win.
'We had a really spectacular audience who found it hugely entertaining.'
The furniture pieces are to be donated to the charity British Heart Foundation.
Grand Designs Live will run from May 2 to 5 and is in its 20th year.

What happened to Grand Designs' most expensive and infamous homes?
A Grand Designs house described as "the perfect home" has gone on the market for the first time. Five-bedroom Green Dragon Barn in Blackawton, Devon, is on sale for £1.5m. It first featured on the Channel 4 programme in 2001, and was revisited by the show in 2022 after 20 years of work from owners Sue Charman and Martin Whitlock. The 4,600 sq ft property was created from three linked barns and has an "eco-conscious design." It is now on sale after Charman died in 2023, with Whitlock saying: "Sue was passionate about environmental issues and we were determined to make the house as natural and sustainable as possible. It was a matter of principle but also very much in the spirit of the building." Here, Yahoo News UK looks at some of the most expensive, and infamous, homes to have also featured on the show. Pavello, a 5,533 sq ft five-bedroom mansion, was the largest ever home featured on Grand Designs. The property in Colgate, West Sussex, was on the programme in 2015 and built by Clinton Dall, a cleaning services business owner who bought the initial plot of land for £850,000 in 2013. Presenter Kevin McCloud said the project risked "financial ruin' but it was ultimately successful, with him saying it was "modernist architecture at the top of its game… an absolutely exquisite experience". Dall sold it for £3.45m in 2019 and it went on the market again five years later, selling for £3.95m in October last year. Chesil Cliff House in Saunton, Devon, is one of the most expensive and infamous properties to have featured on the show. The lighthouse, originally covered in 2019 and revisited in 2022, is considered one of the saddest stories to have been told on Grand Designs. It took 11 years to build, left its owner Edward Short in £7m of debt and cost him his marriage. "It was a nightmare from the moment the first spade hit the ground," Short reflected last year. "We were up against it from day one, with the really vulnerable cliff in front of the house." It was originally listed for £10m in 2022, but last year was on the market for nearly half that amount. It is not currently listed. A 2016 episode told the story of Simon and Jasmine Dale, who set out to build an eco home in Pembrokeshire, Wales, with a budget of £500. Perhaps unsurprisingly, they failed... but still managed to complete the project spending just £27,000. However, it was destroyed by a fire in 2018, with the Dale family unhurt. Dai Swan, from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said at the time: 'It's utterly heartbreaking for the crews seeing how much workmanship has gone into these [house] frames. Each piece of this building is bespoke, it's done to a beautifully high standard and to see it damaged by fire is just heartbreaking.' A JustGiving page raised £35,271 for the couple. Another property which went over budget - but on a bigger scale - was the so-called "Hux Shard" in Huxham, Devon, which featured on Grand Designs in 2021. It was described as a home "that looks like a huge piece of art, with 34 enormous angled zinc shards". Joe and Claire Priday's project cost four times its £835,000 budget at £2.5m. And McCloud said they had 'more money than sense' when they spent £125,000 on the kitchen alone. Freely Streaming Service To Add 16 New Live Channels
The Freely live TV streaming platform is about to be bolstered by the addition of no less than 16 new channels from three of the U.K.'s biggest terrestrial broadcasters. Launched in April 2024 with the backing of the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, Freely enables viewers to watch U.K. terrestrial broadcast channels live over the Internet rather than needing to have an aerial fitted to the house – and the 16 new additions will increase the number of channels Freely carries to more than 55 once they launch later in the year. Freely will be adding 16 new channels to its streamed channel list before the end of 2025. Two of the new channels are being provided by ITV, three are being provided by Channel 4, and 11 come courtesy of Channel 5, with the full breakdown as follows: * ITV will be launching a channel dedicated to popular quiz show The Chase, alongside a Saturday Night Every Night channel dedicated to a mixture of quiz, game and talent shots. * Channel 4's trio of Freely additions will be 4Reality, 4Homes and 4Life. As their names suggest, these focus respectively on: reality TV, with programmes such as Married At First Sight; home renovation, interior design and new property shows such as Grand Designs; and lifestyle programming covering travel, food and animals in shows such as The Dog House. * Channel 5's 11 additions cover a broad range of content, with five actually being exclusive to Freely. The five exclusive ones are 'GPs Behind Closed Doors', 'The Yorkshire Vet', 'History', 'Dogs Behaving (Very) Badly', and a channel dedicated to pre-school show 'Milkshake!'. The other six are "Police Interceptors'", 'Cops', 'Bargain Loving Brits', "Trucking Hell", 'Crime' and 'A&E'. The new Freely channels include a mix of lifestyle, reality and children's programming from three of ... More the U.K.'s biggest terrestrial broadcasters. That's not actually the end of the channel expansion for owners of some Freely-capable TV brands, though. Everyone TV, the company responsible for Freely, has also revealed that owners of Hisense and Toshiba TVs that carry the Freely service will be getting a further 80-plus channels courtesy of the VIDAA smart platform's Free Ad-supported Streaming TV (FAST) service. These will be added to the Freely TV guide on compatible TVs from channel number 1001, and will include such channels as Sony ONE, CNN, Sky, and Banijay. These new 'live' streamed channels are joined on the Freely platform by what's currently claimed to be more than 70,000 hours of on demand content, which the Freely interface enables users to access seamlessly alongside all the live channels. While Hisense and Toshiba Freely TVs will be the only ones to get the new FAST channels because they carry the necessary VIDAA smart system, other Freely TVs from Bush, Panasonic, Sharp, TCL, Amazon and METZ will all be able to enjoy the 16 new ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 offerings. These new channels join deals Freely has signed since it launched with content partners that include UKTV, AMC Networks International and PBS America. A full list of all the channels currently available on Freely can be found at this link. Freely can't currently put a definite date on when the new ITV, Channel 5 and Channel 5 shows will definitely be available, saying only that they are set to launch in 2025. The VIDAA FAST channels, though, are set to be integrated into the Freely TV Guide on Hisense and Toshiba TVs in the coming month. — Related Reading Free Streaming Service Freely Adds Four New Content Partners Sky Launches New Gen 2 Sky Glass TVs, With Cheaper Sky Glass Air Series To Follow Kaleidescape Launches New Entry-Level Movie Player
