Pakistan beefs up Chenab Rangers opposite Jammu border
Amid escalating tensions post Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan has beefed up the deployment of Chenab Rangers along the 200 km Indo-Pak international border in Jammu region, said people familiar with the development.
'Pakistan has increased the presence of its men opposite Kathua, Samba and Jammu border. Additional deployment of men from 13 Chenab Rangers opposite Jammu and 14 and 26 Chenab Rangers opposite Samba and Kathua districts respectively have been made,' said officials sources, adding that 'Earlier, Pakistan posts opposite Jammu border had two to three Rangers but now their number has gone up to 10 to 12 in each post.'
They divulged that the BSF observed heightened activities in Pakistani posts following Pahalgam terror attack.
The 200 km long Indo-Pak international border starts from Paharpur adjoining Kathua and runs up to Akhnoor sector in Jammu district. BSF has the operational responsibility of the entire IB. The international border in Jammu has also been closed for civilians amid heightened tensions. The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure, said sources.
BSF has also suspended civilian movement at Octroi Post in Suchetgarh area of RS Pura sector in Jammu district. Octroi Post of the BSF is barely 22 kms from Jammu city and it is a popular spot among tourists to view zero line.
Pakistan's defence minister Khawaja Asif, in a TV interview, has warned that India's moves following the Pahalgam terror attack, could lead to an 'all-out war' between the two countries.
Claiming that the Pakistani military was 'prepared for any eventuality' amid escalating diplomatic tensions with India, Khwaja Asif said, 'We will measure our response to whatever is initiated by India. It would be a measured response… If there is an all-out attack or something like that, then obviously there will be an all-out war.' He, however, hoped the dispute could be resolved through negotiations.

‘Whole world now knows the truth': Shashi Tharoor-led delegation wraps up US visit; urges global terror fight
NEW DELHI: The multi-party parliamentary delegation led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on late Sunday concluded its high-level visit to the United States, wrapping up the final leg of a diplomatic mission aimed at building international consensus on India's counter-terrorism stance following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which left 26 people dead. Taking to X as he wrapped up the US visit, Tharoor wrote: 'If you are born a hundred times, you will do it a hundred times. I will love my country with all my heart… A Watan. The whole world now knows the truth. We are lovers of non-violence, but only until someone tests that... Jai Hind!' — ShashiTharoor (@ShashiTharoor) On the final day of the tour, the delegation paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi's statue in Washington. Tharoor later posted on X: 'It is striking how many world capitals are adorned with statues or busts of the Mahatma, the 20th century's greatest apostle of peace, nonviolence, and human freedom.' The group, which arrived in Washington on June 3 after stops in Guyana, Panama, Colombia, and Brazil, met with several key American leaders including US Vice President JD Vance, Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, senior members of Congress, policy experts, and members of the Indian-American community. Describing the meeting with Vance as 'an excellent meeting,' Tharoor said the Vice President was 'warm and welcoming and receptive,' and 'expressed complete understanding, first of all, outrage of what happened in Pahalgam and support and respect for India's restrained response in Operation Sindoor.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Capital Gains Exemptions for Seniors SmartAsset Learn More Undo A US State Department spokesperson said Landau 'reaffirmed the United States' strong support of India in the fight against terrorism and the strategic partnership between the two countries.' Addressing the Centre on Foreign Relations, Tharoor had said India's actions were targeted at terror infrastructure, not civilians. 'We're not interested in attacking Pakistani civilians, ordinary people. This is about India versus terrorism… If you're not prepared to shut down the safe havens or arrest terrorist leaders, then I'm afraid this is the only way we can deal with it,' he said. Referring to Pakistan's military, he added, 'In India, the state has an army. In Pakistan, the army has a state,' accusing Islamabad of manipulating public opinion through conflict. Tharoor dismissed claims of Pakistani success during the brief hostilities that followed, saying, 'Two videos came out on social media, both turned out to be from other conflicts in other years, nothing to do with this one.'

Protester in Bangladesh student uprising of 2024 is a voter in W.B.'s Kakdwip
Amid the row over alleged irregularities in the voter lists of West Bengal, a person who was active in the students' protest in Bangladesh in 2024, was found to be a registered voter in the State's Kakdwip Assembly segment. While several photographs of the youth, Newton Das, participating in the movement that brought regime change in the neighbouring country last year are available on social media, Mr. Das himself said he is a citizen of India. However, he did not deny that he was actively involved in the protests in Bangladesh. 'I went to Bangladesh in 2024 for issues related to an ancestral property and got caught in the revolution. I have been a voter in Kakdwip since 2014 but lost my voter card in 2017. In 2018, I got a fresh voter card with the help of local MLA Manturam Pakhira,' Mr. Das said in a video message. Mr. Das confirmed that he had voted for Trinamool Congress's Kakdwip MLA Manturam Pakhira in the 2016 Assembly election, but failed to specify if he is currently in India or Bangladesh. Tapan Das, one of Mr. Das's cousins, said that his 'brother was born in Bangladesh and exercises voting rights in both the countries'. However, his account differed from Mr. Das's. 'He (Mr. Das) had come here after the pandemic for selling some land and since then, he has not come here. Since he was born in Bangladesh, he is a voter of Bangladesh too. It is his fault that he is registered as a voter in both the countries,' Mr. Tapan Das, who resides in Kakdwip, told mediapersons. Kakdwip is located close to the Sundarbans, which shares borders with Bangladesh. The incident sparked a major row in political circles with the Bharatiya Janata Party accusing the ruling Trinamool of enlisting Bangladeshi nationals as voters in West Bengal. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said lakhs of Bangladesh nationals are registered as voters in West Bengal. Mr. Adhikari further claimed that the name of Saad Sheikh, an alleged operative of terror outfit Ansarullah Bangla, was included in the voter list of Murshidabad district. West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar, in a social media post described the latest incident as another shining example of the 'so-called Egiye Bangla Model'. 'The same Newton who was seen wielding a stick during Bangladesh's quota reform movement is now a registered voter in Kakdwip,' Mr. Majumdar said, blaming the ruling party and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the thriving 'illegal infiltration industry'. The Trinamool leadership tried to turn tables on the BJP, pointing out that the job of safeguarding international borders and preventing illegal infiltration rested with the Border Security Force (BSF). 'Whether these people come from land, water or air, the BSF and Union government are responsible. The State administration will do its role for sure,' Trinamool leader Kunal Ghosh said. In February 2025, Ms. Banerjee had alleged irregularities in the voter list of the State, saying voters from other states had electoral photo identity card (EPIC) numbers similar to those in West Bengal. The BJP leadership had hit back saying that people from Bangladesh were enrolled as voters in West Bengal at the behest of the ruling party.
