What ‘unity govt' when DAP always attacking us, says GPS man
PETALING JAYA : A Sarawak assemblyman has questioned the sincerity of the 'unity' in the Madani government, citing the state DAP chapter's repeated attacks of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said the apparent unity in the federal level contradicted the reality in Sarawak, where DAP has been relentlessly on the offensive against the GPS state administration.
He cited Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's remarks at the recent retreat involving the government's 143 MPs, where the Pakatan Harapan chairman said the unity of the federal government was intact.
'(Anwar) even thanked Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and GPS chief whip Fadillah Yusof for their unwavering spirit of unity,' Lo said, according to Dayak Daily.
'But we must ask, what unity is Anwar referring to when Sarawak DAP continues its sustained attacks on GPS?'
Lo pointed out that DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook and adviser Lim Guan Eng had apologised to GPS over past statements by DAP leaders that offended the Sarawak government and people.
The Sarawak United Peoples' Party deputy secretary-general said these apologies, made prior to the unity government's formation, were quickly discredited by Sarawak DAP's actions.
'Since then, Sarawak DAP has done nothing but oppose GPS at every turn, questioning our policies, casting doubt on our initiatives and repeatedly undermining Sarawak's leadership.
'That is not sincerity; that is political theatrics staged for public relations, not rooted in principles.'

Saifuddin Nasution: Govt respects free speech rights but democracy belongs in Parliament
ALOR SETAR, July 26 — The Madani government is committed to upholding the principles of the Federal Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech for Malaysians, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. Saifuddin Nasution said that due to this principle, his ministry did not place too much emphasis on the assembly held in the capital today. 'When the court says there's no need to notify the police, we go along with it. 'But the main issue I want to raise is this — if the Opposition truly respects democratic principles, I wish to pose the question, do they want to act outside Parliament or inside Parliament?' he said. Saifuddin Nasution said that if demands towards the government were made outside Parliament, such as by holding assemblies, it would have no impact. 'In Parliament, the prime minister has opened up the opportunity fully, and the Opposition can table a motion of no confidence. In this case, the Prime Minister even said the Opposition's motion would be given priority, and government business would be postponed. But Parliament has been sitting for five days now, and it's been silent,' he said. According to Saifuddin Nasution, if the Opposition understands the democratic process and wants to use democratic means to topple someone, it should be done through Parliament. ‘Save the Malayan Tiger' campaign gains momentum with RM2.1m in donations, says acting natural resources minister
SHAH ALAM, July 26 — Contributions to the 'Save the Malayan Tiger' campaign have reached RM2.1 million since its launch in 2021, says acting Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. He said the donations were made possible through cooperation with various strategic partners, including the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), to raise funds and awareness on the importance of Malayan tiger conservation. 'So far, FAM has contributed about RM200,000 to the Save the Malayan Tiger Campaign Fund through proceeds from football match ticket sales. Once again, I would like to thank FAM,' he said here today. Also present were Peninsular Malaysia Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) director-general Datuk Abdul Kadir Abu Hashim and FAM president Datuk Mohd Joehari Mohd Ayub. Johari, who is also the Minister of Plantation and Commodities, said this in a speech delivered by Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii when officiating the national-level Global Tiger Day celebration, held annually on July 29. Meanwhile, Johari said the Cabinet had, on June 16, 2021, agreed to implement extraordinary strategic actions for Malayan tiger conservation over a 10-year period from 2021 to 2030. He said these actions encompassed three approaches: intensifying efforts to halt population decline, improving governance and implementation effectiveness in conservation, and strengthening initiatives to ensure the long-term survival of the Malayan tiger. 'Monitoring conducted by Perhilitan with support from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) has shown a rise in the Malayan tiger population. 'This is a positive indicator of the success of ongoing efforts, including habitat conservation through international accreditation and recognition schemes,' he said. In addition, Johari said Malaysia was currently working to secure 'Conservation Assured Tiger Standards' accreditation for Taman Negara in Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan, as well as Endau Rompin National Park. He added that Perhilitan was also pursuing Asean Heritage Park (AHP) recognition for the Tengku Hassanal Wildlife Reserve. — Bernama
