Russell suggests Mercedes are still after Verstappen

SPIELBERG, Austria - George Russell has suggested his contract renewal talks with Mercedes are being held up because the team are still keen to sign Formula One champion Max Verstappen.
The 27-year-old Briton, winner in Canada two weeks ago, is out of contract at the end of the season while four-times champion Verstappen has a deal with Red Bull until 2028, subject to get-out clauses.
Russell told Sky Sports television at the Austrian Grand Prix that Mercedes, constructors' champions eight years in a row from 2014-2021 and currently second to McLaren, wanted to return to the top.
"If you're going to be back on top you need to make sure you've got the best drivers, the best engineers, the best pit crew, and that's what Mercedes are chasing," he said.
"So, it's only normal that conversations with the likes of Verstappen are ongoing. But from my side, if I'm performing as I'm doing, what have I got to be concerned about? There are two seats in every Formula One team."
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff made his interest in Verstappen clear last year as he sought a replacement for seven-times champion Lewis Hamilton.
In the end 18-year-old Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli was handed the opportunity and has been setting a string of age records, drawing strong support from fans.
Verstappen and Russell have had a series of headline clashes on and off the track over the past 12 months, with Mercedes likely to have concerns about pairing them together should the opportunity arise.
Russell told reporters separately that team boss Toto Wolff has assured him he was performing as well as anybody on the starting grid.
"I think there's only one driver that you can debate in terms of performance -- these are his words, these are not my words -- so that's why I have no concern about the future," he said.
"But there's two seats at every team and I guess he needs to think, who are those two drivers going to be for those two seats, and I guess that's what the delay is."
Verstappen, appearing in the main FIA press conference, was reluctant to talk about his future when asked if he would be driving for Red Bull next year.
"Do you want me to repeat what I said last year?... it's not really on my mind. Just driving well, trying to push the performance, and then we focus on next year." REUTERS

The 31-year-old triple world and Olympic 1,500 metres champion had needed to take more than seven seconds off her own 2023 world record of 4:07.64 but, despite a series of aids, managed just over one second. 'I'm exhausted, I feel tired,' said Kipyegon. 'I tried to be the fastest woman under four minutes, I've proven it's possible, it's only a matter of time. I think it will come one day, if not me someone else.' She was helped by innovative new kit, super-spikes and, crucially, a phalanx of mostly male pacers who blocked the wind on the four and a bit laps of the Stade Charlety track where she set her 1,500m world record last year. Dressed in a black one-pieced suit with black arm warmers, the diminutive Kenyan was swamped by her group of pacers, all world class athletes themselves. In a pre-designed plan, a group of five men ran in a line in front of her as 'the shield' with American double Olympic bronze medallist Grant Fisher on her shoulder. She was about on course at halfway but began to slip behind the coloured pacing lights inside the track and drifted on the final lap as she tied up over the last 200 metres. Those male pacers meant, just as with compatriot Eliud Kipchoge's sub-two-hour marathon run with 'in and out' pacers in 2019, that the new mark will not be recognised as a world record. I will still go for it and if there's not something like this, a special one, I think in a normal Diamond League, or anything, I will still go for it and I hope I will get it one day.' Britain's Roger Bannister was the first man to go under four minutes in May 1954, with compatriot Diane Leather the first woman to break five minutes later the same month. The current men's record is the 3:43.13 set by Hicham El Guerrouj in 1999. Kipyegon, who is yet to decide whether she will do the 1500/5,000m double at September's world championships in Tokyo, added: 'This was the first trial. I've learnt many lessons from this race. 'I will go back to the drawing board to see where I can improve. One time, one day, it will come my way. There's more in the tank.' Beijing 2022 silver medallist Bruce Mouat will captain, or skip, the men's team of four after a dominant season that brought a second world championship title. Mouat leads an experienced line-up of fellow Olympic silver medallists Grant Hardie, Bobby Lammie and Hammy McMillan with Pyeongchang 2018 Olympian Kyle Waddell as alternate. "Team Mouat have had an outstanding run of form this past year, becoming the first-ever rink to win four Grand Slam titles in one season, and I know they will be wanting to better the silver medal they won in Beijing," said Team GB Chef de Mission and Olympic champion skip Eve Muirhead. Top Tesla executive, an Elon Musk confidant, leaves the company, sources say

PHOTO: REUTERS Tesla executive and longtime Elon Musk confidant Omead Afshar has left the electric-vehicle maker, three people familiar with the matter said on June 26, another senior departure as the company grapples with slowing global demand. Mr Afshar was part of the CEO's office and since last year had overseen sales and manufacturing in Europe and North America. After joining Tesla in 2017, he quickly became one of Mr Musk's trusted lieutenants, playing a central role in major projects like the Texas Gigafactory. The sources, who declined to be identified, had no details on the circumstances of his exit or the reason behind it. Mr Afshar posted about Tesla on X early this week, and his profiles on X and LinkedIn still showed his Tesla role as current on June 25. Mr Afshar departed amid slumping demand in Europe and North America for Tesla's ageing vehicle line-up while rivals have offered more affordable alternatives. Two people familiar with Tesla's operations said Mr Afshar was among the executives who took on bigger roles this year when Mr Musk was focused on Washington. Mr Musk led President Donald Trump's government cost-cutting drive this year, and many investors and analysts worried that distracted Mr Musk from Tesla and alienated some potential buyers. Former mid-level Tesla sales manager Matthew LaBrot, who was recently fired for public criticism of Mr Musk, said Mr Afshar was a 'supporting character' closely tied to Mr Musk until he rose to head sales and manufacturing in North America and Europe. Mr LaBrot said there was significant pressure internally to deal with the sales declines, which have been particularly severe in Europe. Mr Afshar's departure was reported earlier by Bloomberg News, which also reported that North America HR Director Jenna Ferrua had exited the company. Two of the three people who confirmed Mr Afshar's departure to Reuters also said Ms Ferrua had left. One of those people said Mr Afshar and Ms Ferrua were close colleagues, so it was not surprising that both left around the same time. Another of the people said Ms Ferrua has served as a direct HR adviser to Mr Afshar. The departure caps a series of executive exits over the past 14 months, driven by restructuring across the company as Tesla slashed thousands of jobs and shifted its focus to AI-powered self-driving technology and robotics. The departures included leaders in robots, batteries and public policy. The head of Tesla's Optimus humanoid robot team, Mr Milan Kovac, announced he was leaving this month, and top battery executive Vineet Mehta did so in May. Chief battery engineer Drew Baglino, Ms Rebecca Tinucci, who led the supercharging division, and global public policy head Rohan Patel left in spring 2024. Mr Musk ended his Washington stint in late May, reassuring some investors concerned about brand damage. But Tesla's shares remain down about 19 per cent for the year, after an initial rise on optimism that Mr Trump's victory would clear the regulatory path for robotaxis. On June 22, Tesla deployed self-driving taxis in Austin, Texas. Some analysts have warned that the company's plan to expand to other cities later this year could face hurdles, due to concerns about safety and the technology. On June 23, Mr Afshar posted on X that the Austin robotaxi debut was an 'absolutely historic day for Tesla', adding: 'Thank you, Elon, for pushing us all!' In the past, Mr Afshar posted about spending holidays and late nights with Mr Musk, particularly when Tesla was ramping up production of the mass-market Model 3 sedan in 2018.
