
Humanoid robots are the next step for AI. Here's how to train yours
The next phase of artificial intelligence (AI) is robots, which will help with the global labour shortage, an Nvidia executive told Euronews Next.
"We are at a very interesting point in time. The promise of robotics has existed for a long time. It's been in our imaginations and science fiction," Rev Lebaredian, vice president of Omniverse and simulation technology at Nvidia, told Euronews Next at the Computex technology fair in Taiwan.
He said that despite tech companies trying to build a general-purpose robot for years, the issue has been that, despite being able to build the physical robot, programming it has always been a challenge.
"AI has changed all that. We now have the technology to make robots really programmable in a general-purpose way and make it so that normal people can programme them, not just specific robot programming engineers," he said.
Companies such as Tesla are racing to build humanoid robots and have made strides. Last week, Elon Musk's company said its Optimus robot had learned to perform household chores.
However, there is still much for robots to learn.
For Nvidia, the company says robots should learn their tasks in the virtual world for safety, but also because it would take too long to train robots with humans.
"The only way to actually create these robots, intelligent ones, is to employ simulation," Lebaredian said.
"The fundamental problem that we have with physical AI is that AI is data hungry. You have to feed into your AI factory lots and lots of quality data to give it life experience to train from".
He said that with large language models (LLMs), there is a large amount of data online to train them.
But he said in physical AI, there is no such data that can be mined.
"To get all of the information we need to train a robot on how to pick up an object, we have to go create it somehow," he said.
"Collecting it from the real world is not possible. We can't create enough data. Even if you can, in some cases, it's dangerous, it's time-consuming, and it is expensive".
What is needed is "a way to go from fossil data to renewable data sources," Lebaredian said. And the best renewable data source for physical data is a physical simulator, he added.
Once your robot is tested, or has "graduated" and looks like it is working well, it can then go to its first employer.
"A new college graduate is trained on a corpus of publicly available data. You study from textbooks and information that everybody has access to everywhere. And you have a generalist that enters your company, and they're useful," Lebaredian told Euronews Next.
"But they're not really useful until you train them for a few years on the specific proprietary information and data in your company that's about your domain and your particular practices and how things are done," he added.
In robot terms, it means that you could then specialise your robot with your own data to make it work best for you.
Lebaredian did not specify a date when humanoid robots would come into our lives, but he said it would be "soon".
The first use cases for them would be in factories and warehouses.
"I think industrial use is going to be the first one because even if we can build a perfect robot that you can use in your home, it's not clear that all humans will want one," according to Lebaredian.
"But industry, there is a great need for it. There aren't enough young people replacing the older skilled workers who are retiring in every country".
Global labour shortages have reached historically high levels in the past decade, according to the OECD.
Population declines, as well as ageing populations, and the fact that many people do not want the "three D" jobs, which, according to the Nvidia executive, were "jobs that are dangerous, dull, and dirty".
Taiwan has jumped on this robotics need and is set to launch a five-year plan to boost the robotics industry in a bid to plug labour shortages, the government announced last week.
Taiwan's population decline would strain the economy and the nation's ability to care for vulnerable and elderly people, Peter Hong, who heads the National Science and Technology Council's (NSTC) Department of Engineering and Technologies, was reported as saying, according to local media.
Lebaredian said that after factory use, humanoid robots could help in retail, as he hears a lot of companies saying they cannot hire enough people to stack shelves.
He also said they could be used in mines, nuclear reactors, or even in space. Eventually, he said they could be used to take care of the elderly if the demand is there.
But just as we get excited about this next phase of AI, LLMs are still getting much wrong, which is causing them to sometimes make things up. Errors caused by a robot in the physical world could be much more dangerous.
However, Lebaredian believes that just like autonomous vehicles seem like science fiction at first, people eventually get used to them, and the technology improves.
"In generative AI, yes, there's still some stuff that's inaccurate, but I think you have to admit, in the last two and a half years since ChatGPT was introduced, accuracy and the quality of what it's producing have increased exponentially as well," he said.
But he added that perhaps chatbots will never be quite right because we want humans to perform the tasks.
"There's actually no right answer for a lot of that stuff," he said.
"But for tasks that we have in industry, that is actually something that's very measurable, for example, did it accurately pick up this object and move it over here and do that safely and robustly?"
He said those systems can be created, tested, and made sure they are safe before deployment. We can create these systems, test them, and make sure that they're working well before deploying them.
"We have machinery and systems that we create that are quite dangerous if they're not set up right. But we've managed to create nuclear reactors and these systems, and keep them safe somehow. We can do the same with physical AI," he said.
Women's jobs are at a higher risk of automation by artificial intelligence (AI) than those occupied by men, according to a new study from the United Nations.
The recent report from the UN's International Labour Organisation (ILO) and Poland's National Research Institute of the Ministry of Digital Affairs (NASK) found that automation could replace just under 10 per cent of female-dominated positions in high-income countries compared to the 3.5 per cent it could replace for men.
The biggest disparity between male and female-dominated jobs happens in high-income countries, where 41 percent of all high-income work for women could be exposed to AI, compared to 28 percent of men's jobs.
In Europe and Central Asia, 39 per cent of women's jobs could be affected compared to 26 percent of men.
The patterns identified by the study "reflect both occupational structures," and that AI-exposed jobs are "concentrated in higher-income countries".
Overall, the ILO found that one in four workers globally work in an occupation with some AI exposure.
To reach these findings, the survey was conducted with1,640 people employed in various fields in Poland, with the results analysed by a small group of international experts.
Researchers then developed an AI that used this survey data alongside national job information to identify how likely 2,500 professions and over 29,000 work tasks would be automated.
The study found that clerical occupations like data entry clerks, typists, word processing operators, accountants, and bookkeeping clerks are the most exposed to AI, due to some of the tasks performed in those professions, like taking meeting notes or scheduling appointments.
Other professions identified with a large AI exposure are web and media developers, database specialists, financial, and software-related jobs.
The study notes that these numbers reflect the "potential exposure," but that they don't reflect any actual job losses.
Full replacement by AI is still "limited," the report continued, noting that human involvement is still needed to oversee certain tasks.
"As most occupations consist of tasks that require human input, transformation of jobs is the most likely impact of generative AI," the report reads.
What could impact the number of jobs lost or AI adoption more broadly are technological constraints, infrastructure gaps, and skills shortages, the report continued.
The report asks governments, employees, and workers organisations to shape "inclusive strategies" that can help protect job quality and productivity in endangered fields.
"It's easy to get lost in the AI hype," Janine Berg, senior economist at the ILO, said in a statement. "What we need is clarity and context".

French start-up H Company releases new AI agents 'cheaper' than rivals
French artificial intelligence (AI) start-up H Company, which launched last year and raised hundreds of millions of euros in investment before it had even released its first product, brought out three new AI agents on Tuesday. 'We are all in on the agentic race, that's our path. We are even potentially ahead with really good results in computer use technologies,' Charles Kantor, the company's CEO and co-founder, told Euronews Next. Agentic AI models, or AI agents, do not just process information but also try to plan and complete tasks and solve problems. However, Kantor said that humans would 'always be at the centre' of their AI models, so that if the agent wrote an email, it would just be a draft and only the human would be able to send the message. The three models that H has released are called Runner H, Tester H, and Surfer H. H said that the three products reflect the company's vision for a 'trusted, action-oriented AI that delivers task execution beyond traditional chatbots'. It claims that it achieves a 92.2 per cent success rate, while reducing costs by up to 5.5 times against competitors such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Runner H allows users to automate workflows and streamline tasks. Kantor said it was 'a more advanced version of Manus,' he said, referring to the Chinese AI agent. It is aimed at consumer use. Surfer H allows you to surf the web and navigate browser environments, and the company claims the model achieved a 92.2 per cent task completion accuracy on the WebVoyager benchmark at $0.13 (€0.11) per task. This is much cheaper than competitors, such as OpenAI's Operator agent, which costs $200 (€175) per month for its Pro subscription plan. 'It's really like almost an agent acting on your behalf, using planning to visual capabilities to recognise interfaces, clicking, scrolling, acting, fetching information, and so on,' Kantor said. Tester H is the final new model, which is built more for enterprise use with one of the big things it can do being software testing. But it can also do things such as smart email replies. You can ask the agent to read your recent emails, and it can draft template answers. But the agent will not hit send; only the human can do this. H said that the three products reflect the company's vision for a 'trusted, action-oriented AI that delivers task execution beyond traditional chatbots'. All the models are trained on synthetic data, which means it uses artificially generated data designed to mimic real-world data, allowing the company to meet Europe's GDPR rules on data protection. According to Kantor, he personally uses H's AI models for the interconnection between tools such as emails and documents to prepare information, such as for billing or drafting emails. But he also uses it for preparing company content that is then reviewed, such as for ads and markets. 'When you start to review the work of an agent, you start to feel the productivity,' he said. H Company created a buzz when it launched last year. Kantor was a university professor at Stanford while the start-up's other co-founders came from DeepMind. Meanwhile, investment came from LVMH's CEO Bernard Arnault, Iliad founder Xavier Niel, Amazon, Samsung, and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, among others. But just several months after launch, three of the co-founders - Daan Wierstra, Karl Tuyls, and Julien Perolat - quit due to 'operational differences,' the company said in a LinkedIn post. For Kantor, the situation surrounding their departure is 'in the past'. 'We had this kind of strategic disalignment, but now they are ambassadors of the company, and H's vision is really clear,' he said. 'We want to be at the state of the art in terms of action models and the agentic space, and we want this technology to benefit humanity'. The company now has around 70 employees in Paris and in the United Kingdom and has a big research and engineering department. 'It's kind of the concerto of age. You need to be able to really orchestrate in the right manner: Product, research, and engineering synergies to build category-defining AI,' he said. For Kantor, agentic AI is the next phase of AI, which will be vital to physical AI, which NVIDIA spoke of at length two weeks ago. 'We're gonna see a lot of companies thriving worldwide, but also in France, in robotics. I think Agent AI is gonna be the heart, the gist, I may say, of many fields,' Kantor said, referring to computer games, simulated worlds, and robotics. 'The software part of robotics is gonna be based on agentics, superintelligence. The opportunities are numerous'.

Trump gives Elon Musk an Oval Office sendoff
US President Donald Trump bid farewell to Elon Musk in the Oval Office on Friday. Musk is leaving his position spearheading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and is rededicating himself to his businesses, including electric car maker Tesla, rocket company SpaceX and social media platform X. The US President credited Musk with 'a colossal change in the old ways of doing business in Washington" and said some of his staff would remain in the administration. Musk left a searing mark on the US federal bureaucracy, including thousands of employees who were fired or pushed out. Some government functions were eviscerated, including the US Agency for International Development, which had provided a lifeline for impoverished people around the world. Boston University researchers estimate that hundreds of thousands of people have already died as a result of the cuts. Trump gifted Musk what appeared to be a gold-coloured key for his work for establishing DOGE, which sought to layoff federal workers and close government agencies to achieve cost savings. Trump said that he would only bestow this gift to "very special people" and that it was a "presentation from our country." In response, Musk said: "I hope to continue to provide advice whenever the president would like." "I hope so," Trump cut in before Musk said he hopes to still achieve $1 trillion in federal spending cuts over time. 'He's going to be back and forth, I imagine,' Trump said. Trump noted that DOGE employees will remain embedded with government agencies and said the billionaire will probably want to keep tabs on 'his baby.' French President Emmanuel Macron warned the US and Indo-Pacific nations on Friday night that they risk a dangerous double standard as they concentrate on a potential conflict with China, if it comes at the cost of abandoning Ukraine. Macron's remarks come as the US considers withdrawing troops from Europe to instead deploy in the Indo-Pacific. He warned abandoning Ukraine would threaten US credibility in deterring potential conflict between China and Taiwan. "If you consider that Russia could be allowed to take a part of the territory of Ukraine without any restriction, without any constraint, without any reaction of the global order, how would you phrase what would happen in Taiwan, what would you do the day something happened?' he asked in a speech. Macron's comments were made during his keynote address at Shangri-La Dialogue security conference in Singapore. It is the region's biggest security forum that comes amid concerns of China's growing assertiveness and the global impact of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Notable was the fact that it the speech was delivered with US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth in the audience. Rhetoric between Beijing and Washington is heightening. The US has threatened China with triple-digit tariffs. There is uncertainty in the region over the commitment of the US to Taiwanese security – which also faces possible 32% American tariffs. China claims Taiwan as its own. Chinese President Xi Jinping hasn't ruled out taking it by force. China regularly sends military aircraft and ships near Taiwan and currently has an aircraft carrier southeast of the island. The US has been pursuing a "free and open Indo-Pacific policy,' which includes regularly sailing warships through the Taiwan Strait and in the South China Sea.

Trump gives Musk an Oval Office goodbye
The pair will hold a joint press conference at 1.30pm (1730 GMT), with Trump attempting to put a positive spin on Musk's departure from the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) after just four months. Trump, 78, praised the "terrific" Musk on Thursday and insisted that his influence would continue despite the South African-born tech tycoon returning to his Space X and Tesla companies. "This will be his last day, but not really, because he will, always, be with us, helping all the way," Trump said on his Truth Social network. Vice President JD Musk praised Musk's "incredible" job in an interview with Newsmax and vowed that "the DOGE effort will continue." But the news conference will be a far cry from Musk's first dramatic appearance in the Oval Office in February, when he brought his young son with him and outshone even the attention-seeking president himself. At the time the 53-year-old was almost inseparable from Trump, glued to his side on Air Force One, Marine One, in the White House and at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. Yet Musk is now leaving Trump's administration under a cloud, after openly admitting disillusionment with his role, and criticizing the Republican president's spending plans. DOGE rampage The right-wing magnate's DOGE has led an ideologically-driven rampage through the federal government, with its young "tech bros" slashing tens of thousands of jobs. It has also shuttered whole departments including the US Agency for International Development (USAID), leading to huge cuts in foreign aid that critics say will hit some of the world's poorest people and boost US rivals. But DOGE's achievements fell far short of Musk's boasts when he blazed into Washington brandishing a chainsaw at a conservative event and bragged that it would be easy to cut two trillion dollars. Trump also loudly proclaimed that DOGE was cutting "waste" and would regularly reel off long lists of alleged fraud that Musk's team was discovering, including social security claimants older than the world's oldest person. In reality, the independent "Doge Tracker" site has counted just $12 billion in savings so far while the Atlantic magazine put it far lower, at $2 billion. Musk's Silicon Valley-style "move fast and break things" mantra was also at odds with some of his Washington colleagues. He clashed with other cabinet members and said in an interview earlier this week that he was "disappointed" in Trump's recent mega tax and spending bill as it undermined DOGE's cuts. Musk's companies, meanwhile, were suffering. Tesla shareholders called for him to return to work as sales slumped and protests targeted the electric vehicle maker, while Space X had a series of fiery rocket failures. At Friday's press conference Musk may also face questions over a New York Times report alleging intensive drug use by the tycoon while on the campaign trail for Trump last year. The Times said the 53-year-old told friends he was taking so much of the anesthetic ketamine "that it was affecting his bladder, a known effect of chronic use." Musk has previously admitted to taking ketamine, saying he was prescribed it to treat a "negative frame of mind" and suggesting his use of drugs benefited Tesla investors.
