There was a time when Rassie Erasmus took orders from Joe Schmidt, and the Springbok coach admits he is nervous going up against his old master when the Springboks host the Wallabies on Saturday at Ellis Park.
Schmidt is the man respected for building the Ireland rugby dynasty, and Erasmus says he learned from him when he and Jacques Nienaber were coaching Munster in 2016 and 2017.
'I'm not one to suck up other coaches because it doesn't help your team perform better on match day, but Joe is a great coach,' Erasmus said, after naming his team for the opening Test of the Rugby Championship.

Schmidt has picked the Wallabies up off the scrapheap — they could not get out of their pool at the last World Cup — and shaped them into a side that almost beat the British and Irish Lions.
'I worked with Joe in Ireland, as did (assistant Bok coaches) Felix Jones and Jerry Flannery,' Erasmus said.
'When you sign with an Irish club, you don't sign with Ulster, Munster or Leinster, you sign with the Irish Rugby Union, so we reported to Joe Schmidt,' Erasmus explained.
'That is what I did for two years. We sat in many meetings together. He is a very particular guy, very detail-driven. He certainly knows what he wants.
'Players are on edge to satisfy his demands. That is what we will get from the Wallabies this weekend,' Erasmus added.

'I know he is stepping down and Les Kiss is with him here. But he is a very competitive guy and I can't see them not being on a high after the way they finished that Lions series.
'He will want to finish on a high and the players have a lot of respect for what he has brought to the Aussie jersey. Everybody is talking about the fight for the jersey is back. That is what Joe does.
'You can't forget what that guy did for Ireland with only 160 professional players. I had first-hand experience of that. So we have respect for him, and also for the squad he is building.'
While the Aussies were scrapping for their lives in a hugely hyped series with the Lions, the Boks took a road less travelled and had relatively unexacting encounters with the Barbarians, Italy (twice), and Georgia.
'There are two ways to look at the debate over battle-readiness,' Erasmus said. 'They have six or seven injuries after having to field the same team over and over.
'But we lost only one player in Jasper Wiese, when he lost his temper a bit. Otherwise, we have lost nobody here, which bodes well for the Rugby Championship.
'Yes, games are games because you get the pressure and the nerves, and we might be lacking a bit there because none of our games were close. Tactically, we were not challenged by Italy and Georgia, but those were very physical matches.
'Are the Wallabies punch drunk or battle ready? You can never be sure. You can only hope you did the right thing.
'There are two realities,' Erasmus concluded.
'What they believe in their team, what we believe in our team, and then there is the truth. We will find out the truth on Saturday.'

But he was still overlooked for the Boks' Test against Georgia and the first Rugby Championship match against the Wallabies when Wiese was again suspended following a headbutt in the second Italy Test. Last weekend against the Wallabies, captain Siya Kolisi packed down at the back of the scrum, and before that, utility forward Cobus Wiese wore the No 8 jersey against Georgia. But Kolisi's knee injury has opened the door for Du Preez to make a significant statement at No 8, having been selected in the Bok starting line-up for this weekend's crucial Rugby Championship rematch against the Wallabies in Cape Town. Jasper Wiese is also set to miss the Springboks' highly anticipated clash against the All Blacks at Eden Park, while Kolisi is also touch and go for the big clash. With Stormers No 8 Evan Roos not really in the picture, Du Preez has the chance this weekend to cement his place in the starting line-up for that massive clash in Auckland. At his best, Du Preez has a similar profile to Wiese — a strong ball-carrier and an abrasive player on attack and defence. It's probably something the Boks lacked in the collisions when Kolisi went off injured after a blistering start saw them squander a 22-0 lead to lose 38-22 at Ellis Park. Coach Rassie Erasmus scoffed at the idea that they have a crisis at No 8, saying that Wiese will soon be back. But with a lot riding on this weekend's result against the Wallabies, as well as the clash at Eden Park, Du Preez can maybe ease some of the tension around that crucial position at the back of the scrum. 'I don't think there is a crisis at No 8. Jasper Wiese is currently banned and he will be back. Siya was excellent on the weekend — he scored a try and bossed the breakdown. Unfortunately, he injured his knee,' Erasmus said after announcing the team for this weekend's clash. 'Kwagga came on and stole a few balls and made an impact. So, I don't think the No 8 position is where we lost the game. We're not bringing in someone new, because we believe that the guys that are here can do the job for us. 'Everybody has asked 'when is JL (Du Preez) going to get a proper chance', and it's his chance now.' Du Preez will form an unfamiliar back-row partnership with flankers Marco van Staden and Franco Mostert — who is normally a lock, but has played a few Tests on the side of the scrum — in the absence of Kolisi and Pieter-Steph du Toit.

"We were 22 points up and thought this was it, and then you get a shock and two or three concussions. That (the injuries) is not an excuse; it's on us. We lost Siya, Marco, Pieter-Steph and Edwill, and everything compounded. 'Then, all of a sudden, we are 14 points down, and they put the hammer down. As we went through the sessions, the answers came. Things came too easily at Ellis Park, and when it got bad, we could not handle it.' Erasmus says they hope it will be all smiles on Saturday evening with the experienced guys returning; however, they know it will take hard work to get back to winning ways. He added that having the likes of Kolbe, De Allende, Pollard, Le Roux, and Mostert back will provide some much-needed confidence to the side. But the only thing that matters will be getting their campaign back on track. 'Hopefully, it is all smiles on Saturday evening. I am one of the regular guys. When we win, I check social media, but when we lose, I don't. But then my mom sends a message saying, 'my son, I still love you, but don't read what the people are saying'. "It's not nice when we are losing. 'This smile I have is sort of an embarrassed one. It's tough, and we want to get things right. We wish we could've played on Wednesday already. 'We had those mini targets that bind the team together, where we wanted to beat them five times in a row. They had theirs to beat us for the first time in a long time at Ellis Park. They achieved theirs and we must now turn things around.'

Bok ‘bomb squad' is back as Erasmus picks Pollard, Le Roux to start
The Springboks have gone back to the 'bomb squad' to help them get back to winning ways against the Wallabies after a surprise defeat against the men from Down Under. The feared 'bomb squad' is back! Following last Saturday's second half implosion by the Springboks – having led 22-0 at one stage against the Wallabies at Ellis Park to lose 38-22 – coach Rassie Erasmus has made 10 changes to his starting XV and picked a 'bomb squad' with six forwards and two backs for the second Rugby Championship Test against Australia in Cape Town on Saturday. While there are several new faces in the starting team, mainly due to the unavailability of injured players Siya Kolisi, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Kurt-Lee Arendse and Edwill van der Merwe, the bench now also packs a real punch, with the likes of Wilco Louw, Eben Etzebeth, Lood de Jager, Kwagga Smith and Cobus Reinach to give guidance and provide leadership later on. But, young, rising stars Marnus van der Merwe (for Bongi Mbonambi), Boan Venter and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu will bring energy and some X-factor to the match as well. In the starting team, Cheslin Kolbe slots in for Arendse, Canan Moodie replaces Van der Merwe, Jean-Luc du Preez comes in at No 8 for Kolisi and Franco Mostert gets the nod at flank for Du Toit. 'We lost four players to injury last weekend, which obviously had an impact on a few of our selections, but we also know where we went wrong against Australia last week, so we made a few changes that we believe will offer us what we need for this game,' explained Erasmus. 'Damian and Cheslin have also recovered from their injuries, and with their experience and knowledge of the Wallabies, it was a logical choice to recall them. 'We are determined to get things right this week. We are pleased with this squad, and we are all aligned on what we have to do to lift our standards this week.' Must win It is a must win match for the Boks, as a second straight loss would leave the fate of the Rugby Championship firmly out of their hands heading on a two match tour of New Zealand. The All Backs are favourites to pick up a second bonus point win over Los Pumas in Argentina, so it is imperative for the Boks to get back to winning ways, so that they can take some momentum into their tour and keep pace with their biggest rivals. Although the Wallabies haven't won in Cape Town since 1992, streaks are meant to be broken as they showed by winning at Ellis Park for the first time in the professional era, and first time since 1963. 'We don't believe in previous records and Australia showed last week that it is insignificant, so we are under no illusions that this match is going to be another proper grind,' said Erasmus. 'They also showed that they can fight until the end, so it will be vital for us to give everything until the final whistle this weekend. This match is essential for us to get our campaign on track, and we all realise the importance of ensuring that we do not make the same mistakes as last week.'
