Selena's Family ‘Grateful' for Killer's Denied Parole: ‘Nothing Can Bring Selena Back'

Yahoo28-03-2025

Selena Quintailla's family is thankful to see the Tejano icon's murderer stay behind bars. In a statement to Rolling Stone Thursday, Selena's family and partner Chris Pérez shared their gratitude for the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles' decision to deny Yolanda Saldívar's parole request.
'Today, we are grateful that the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles has chosen to deny parole for Yolanda Saldívar,' the statement read. 'While nothing can bring Selena back, this decision reaffirms that justice continues to stand for the beautiful life that was taken from us and from millions of fans around the world far too soon.'

Saldivar — who was convicted of murdering Selena in a Corpus Christi hotel room on March 31, 1995 — is serving a life sentence and may request another parole review in 2030. The panel — comprising three people — cited the 'nature of the offense' as the reason for denying Saldívar's early release. Saldívar has maintained that she shot Selena by accident and that she planned to use the gun on herself.
'Selena's legacy is one of love, music, and inspiration,' Selena's loved ones wrote in their statement. 'She lived with joy, gave selflessly, and continues to uplift generations with her voice and her spirit. As her family and loved ones, we remain committed to preserving her memory and ensuring that her story is honored with the dignity and respect it deserves.'
The statement, also shared by Selena's sister Suzette on Instagram, concluded by thanking Selena's fans for being a 'source of strength and healing' through the last 30 years. 'We will continue to celebrate Selena's life — not the tragedy that took her from us — and we ask that all who cherish her do the same,' the statement read.

Neil Young invites Trump to summer tour, ‘if there is not martial law by then'

Neil Young has extended an invitation to President Donald Trump to attend his upcoming 'Love Earth' summer tour, though with a pointed caveat: 'If there is not martial law by then.' The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, who has been feuding with Trump for years, made the offer Tuesday, June 3, in a post on the Neil Young Archives. 'When I tour the USA this summer, if there is not martial law by then which would make it impossible, let's all come together and stand for American values,' Young wrote. 'We will not be doing a political show. We will be playing the music we love for all of us to enjoy together. President Trump, you are invited. Come and hear our music just as you did for decades.' While the invitation may sound conciliatory, it reads more like a provocation. Trump was once a vocal admirer of Young, attending his shows and praising his performances. 'He's got something very special,' Trump told Rolling Stone in 2008, recalling Young's concerts at Madison Square Garden and his performances at Trump casinos. 'I've met him on occasions and he's a terrific guy.' Their relationship soured after Trump launched his presidential campaign and began using Young's song 'Rockin' in the Free World' at rallies without permission. In his latest message, Young warned, 'Our country and our way of life, that which our fathers and theirs fought for, is now threatened by our government. This is not what we voted for. This is our new reality. Our government is out of control, not standing for us. You can stand up for American values this summer, for our children and theirs.' Young's remarks come amid Trump's escalating conflict with musicians, including Bruce Springsteen, who recently criticized the former president during a concert in England. Trump has since called for investigations into artists like Beyoncé, Bono, and likely Young, over baseless claims of illegal campaign support for Vice President Kamala Harris. 'Bruce Springsteen and many others will be in our country this summer, there for you, playing your favorite music, songs like 'Born in the USA,'' Young added. 'We are proud to be who we are, and we must never let our government forget.' Young, who previously worried he might be barred from re-entering the U.S. over his criticism of Trump, is set to begin his 'Love Earth World Tour' in Europe this month, with North American dates following in August.

Escaped Inmate Asks Lil Wayne, NBA YoungBoy, Meek Mill for Help

One of the inmates still on the lam after the recent jailbreak in New Orleans has put out a plea for help directed at Lil Wayne, Meek Mill, and NBA YoungBoy. Antoine Massey is one of two men who remains at large after escaping a New Orleans jail last month. Earlier this week, he appeared to post a nearly 10-minute video statement to Instagram, denying he came up with the plan for the jailbreak ('I didn't break out, I was let out'), proclaiming his innocence (he's facing charges of domestic violence), and asking for help. More from Rolling Stone Elon Calls Trump's 'Big, Beautiful' Bill a 'Disgusting Abomination' Lil Wayne Celebrates Over 20 Years of 'Tha Carter' With New Tour Neil Young Invites Donald Trump to Summer Tour After Springsteen Spat The three aforementioned rappers — all of whom have had dealings with the criminal justice system — are name-checked multiple times in the clip (which has since been deleted). And because there's never a wrong time to shoot your shot, Massey also asked President Donald Trump for assistance. (Trump previously granted a pardon to Lil Wayne, and he just gave clemency to NBA YoungBoy.) 'I'm asking please for help — YoungBoy, Meek Mills,' Massey said. 'People that been through the system that know it's corrupt. Lil Wayne, Donald Trump. When I get back in custody, I'm asking y'all, please come help.' Reps for Wayne, Mill, and NBA YoungBoy did not immediately return requests for comment. The video featuring Massey was posted on June 1, and authorities found it credible enough that they carried out a search of a home where they believed the video was recorded, per The Associated Press. Authorities zeroed in on the location after being tipped off by relatives who recognized the residence, but Massey was not there when the police arrived. Officials did, however, say they found the clothes they think Massey was wearing in the clip. Massey was one of 10 people who escaped the New Orleans jail, fleeing through a hole that was carved out behind a toilet and then climbing over a wall. (The guard assigned to their cell pod was reportedly getting food at the time of the breakout.) Eight of the inmates who fled the jail have since been taken back into custody; along with Massey, the only inmate still at large is Derrick Groves, who was convicted of killing two people last fall.
