Dons new boy in 'special' admission
Adil Aouchiche is determined to bring further success to Aberdeen this season, following his arrival from Sunderland on a season-long loan deal. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder signed for Jimmy Thelin's side at the weekend, with Aberdeen holding an option to make the deal permanent next summer for a fee of £1.5million. Beginning his career at Paris Saint-Germain, the French midfielder played 77 times for St. Etienne in Ligue 1 before moving to England to sign for Sunderland in the summer of 2023, though he struggled for regular game time as the Black Cats won promotion back to the English Premier League last season.

However, with a fresh start at Pittodrie now on the horizon, Aouchiche is determined to help the Dons add to their Scottish Cup success from last season, 'It's a special feeling to sign for Aberdeen,' said Aouchiche. 'The best move for me is to come here. Everyone knows it's a huge club in Europe and Scotland. I had a really positive and important discussion with the manager, and he made me feel like I was wanted here. He wants me to enjoy the loan spell and bring my qualities and experience to the club. I will try to bring everything to my team-mates and club. I want to achieve things here and hopefully make some good memories.'

Killie double deal
Kilmarnock have confirmed the arrival of two new faces at Rugby Park, as new head coach Stuart Kettlewell continues to build his squad ahead of the season opener next month. First in the door yesterday was Welsh midfielder Tom Lowery, who has penned a two-year deal with the club following his departure from Portsmouth. The 27-year-old began his career with Crewe Alexandra, before departing for Fratton Park in the summer of 2022, where he went on to help the club win the EFL League One title. He spent the majority of the last campaign back at Gresty Road, however, having re-joined his former club on a loan deal.
Striker Djenairo Daniels is the other name brought in by Kettlewell, with the Dutchman joining the club from Cork City for an undisclosed fee, where he has also signed a two-year deal. 'Djenairo is one that we've been aware of for a while', said Kettlewell. 'His qualities are clear to see. He's been playing consistently recently and we're confident he will come in and hit the ground running, and that he can add to the quality we already have in the squad.'

Celtic 'make enquiry'
Celtic head coach Brendan Rodgers is ramping up his search for striking reinforcements after it emerged the club had 'enquired' about Napoli striker Giuseppe Ambrosino, according to Sky Sports Italy's Luca Bedoni. The Italian spent last season on loan at Serie B outfit Frosinone, scoring five goals in 36 appearances, but is now eyeing up a similar switch to the Scottish champions, who have already made 'initial contact' over a deal for the player.

The player is believed to be open to the switch, with the loan deal including an option to buy, though both Cagliari and Cremonese are ready to battle Celtic for the signing of Ambrosino, who has been compared to Belgian forward Dries Martens in the past. Le Harve centre-back Etienne Youte is also being tracked by Celtic this summer, according to L'Equipe. However, both Anderlecht and Besiktas are ready to battle the Hoops for the 23-year-old's signature.
Elsewhere, long-term target Mathias Kvistgaarden is on the verge of completing a £6.9million move to Norwich City this summer, with the Danish youngster set to complete the second part of his medical at Carrow Road today. The 21-year-old Brondby forward will sign a four-year contract with the Canaries.

Rangers head coach Russell Martin is 'determined' to land veteran striker Jamie Vardy this summer, according to a new report. The free agent forward has been linked with a switch to Ibrox throughout the transfer window, though Martin refused to be drawn on links to the 38-year-old in the aftermath of Sunday's pre-season draw with Club Brugge, saying: 'I've been asked about so many players. Some are miles away, some on the money. I'm not going to give you an answer on that. You'll find out who's real and who isn't.'
After a slow start to the transfer window, Rangers have upped the ante in the last fortnight, agreeing deals for Max Aarons on loan from Bournemouth, as well as the permanent signings of Joe Rothwell, Emmanuel Fernandez, and Thelo Aasgaard. However, Martin will be hopeful of adding further to his squad in the coming weeks, telling fans to 'expect the squad to look different in a week'.

Forward Ekitike joins Liverpool from Frankfurt
July 23 (Reuters) - Liverpool have signed French striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt, the Premier League side announced on Wednesday, with media reports saying the deal was worth 69 million pounds ($93.65 million) plus add-ons. Ekitike is Liverpool's second-most expensive recruit in the close season after the Premier League champions signed Germany midfielder Florian Wirtz, who can also play as winger or forward, in June for a club-record 100 million pounds plus add-ons. "The 23-year-old has successfully completed a medical and agreed personal terms with the Reds, allowing him to fly out to Hong Kong to join his new teammates on their pre-season tour of Asia later this week," Liverpool said in a statement. Former Paris St Germain player Ekitike had a breakout campaign in 2024-25, scoring 15 Bundesliga goals in 33 appearances. He also struck four times as Frankfurt reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League. Ekitike, who made his senior debut at Stade de Reims, joined PSG on loan in 2022, making 25 Ligue 1 appearances as they won the French top-flight. He went on loan to Frankfurt in 2023, before making the move permanent a year later. "It's a strong story for him and Eintracht Frankfurt that he's moving to one of Europe's top teams with the greatest ambitions and opportunities," Frankfurt Sporting Director Markus Kroesche said in a statement. "Hugo has earned this move, and it shows that we are capable of offering players a great prospect." Liverpool begin their Premier League title defence at home against Bournemouth on August 15. The Dundonian athlete lit up the Alexander Stadium four years ago as she stormed to victory over 25 laps. In doing so she emulated her mother who won the 10,000m as Liz Lynch, her maiden name, at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh then retained her crown four years later in Auckland. It has left Eilish McColgan in a quandary but she admitted the pull of performing at a home games might persuade her to return to the track. 'Obviously I'm not qualified and I don't have a crystal ball so I don't know what the future holds but I think if it had been any other championship anywhere else in the world, I probably wouldn't be gearing towards it because my main ambitions now are certainly on the road,' said McColgan who was this week named as the first official ambassador for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. 'But I think, for me, it's hard to turn down an opportunity to race in Glasgow, a home championship. How often do I get to do that? I thought Birmingham was a great way to cap off what was a brilliant track career but as I said, it's hard to turn down a home games opportunity. She has fond memories of her late gran watching her Commonwealth Games debut when Glasgow last hosted in 2014 and would love to make more memories for those closest to her. 'The Commonwealths means a lot to my mum and it was probably one of the only races where my granny and grandad - her mum and dad - were in the stadium and were watching her win gold [in Edinburgh in 1986] and then similarly for me there's only been London 2012 and Glasgow and Birmingham, the home championships, where my mum and dad have been in the crowd. 'Glasgow 2014 was the only championships that even my granny came to watch. Unfortunately, my gran's no longer with us but that for me will always be a standout memory, my little granny in the stands with her little tartan beanie on her head cheering me on. The four-time Olympian was the first Briton home at this year's London Marathon as she finished eighth in the women's elite race on her debut. Her time of 2:24:25 was more than two minutes quicker than the Scottish record set by Steph Twell in 2019 (2:26:40) and also beat her mum's marathon best of 2:26:52. 'That is the priority now moving forward for me,' she said. 'The next big one will be a half marathon in September and then to be honest I haven't actually planned any further than that just because I'm building back my training at the moment.' Ruth Chepngetich, the women's marathon world record holder, had been scheduled to run against McColgan in London but the Kenyan was last week provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit after testing positive for a banned substance. It is a blow to the sport's credibility and McColgan feels the authorities need to look beyond just the athlete involved. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'It is really disappointing. I think a lot of people now look at that and suspect that doping's rife within the sport. When the top, top person is doing it it is really disappointing but I think the agents and coaches need to be a little bit more responsible as well. I mean this isn't just Ruth doing this on her own. 'There's a deeper team involved here, whether there's coaches, doctors, agents… I think they need to be held responsible in some way. 'The ban is on the athlete but there needs to be something on the coaches and the people that are administrating this to try and cut it down. They're really having a big crackdown in Kenya at the moment which is amazing to see. Kenya Athletics, to be fair to them, have invested a lot of money in catching people and it is obviously clearly working which is great.' The mascot was devised with the help of 76 children from 24 schools across Glasgow and its signature feature is a horn inspired by the famous traffic cone on top of the Duke of Wellington statue outside the Gallery of Modern of Art. Despite its last-minute nature, she is certain Glasgow 2026 will attract some of the sport's biggest names to Scotstoun, the venue for the athletics. 'I keep seeing people saying, 'do you think the top people will show up?' but your Laura Muirs, your Jake Wightmans, your Josh Kerrs, they're there all the time and I think there's something so unique about representing Scotland. 'We're very patriotic, we're a small nation but it's just special. We don't get the chance to do it very often so everyone does turn up. I remember Jake saying when he won the world championships: 'I need to get myself ready now for the Commonwealth Games'.

Hugo Ekitike joins Liverpool in £79m deal as Reds continue spending spree
Liverpool have completed the £79m deal to sign Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt. The France under-21 striker has signed a six-year deal to keep him at Anfield until 2031. Liverpool beat Newcastle to landing the 23-year-old front man but were confident they were always leading the race and did not make a late move. They have been considering a swoop for him since January, held talks with his camp around then and boss Arne Slot spoke to the player at the end of the season. Ekitike scored 22 goals last season in all competitions but there's belief within Liverpool that he can surpass those numbers significantly to become a deadly striker and one of the best in the world because of his other statistics. The deal is £69m up front with a further £10m in add ons. The data they have used to decide on the significant investment gives them confidence more goals will come. Newcastle striker Alexander Isak was considered more of a guaranteed success but the Magpies insist he's not for sale. Data shows only Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe had better potential than Ekitike at 23 in recent years. Manchester United did make a late move to sign the French forward with Christopher Vivell contacting Eintracht Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krosche but the player was only interested in Liverpool. Liverpool didn't enter the negotiation until Newcastle had nearly agreed a deal as they didn't want a bidding war. The Reds see Ekitike as a No 9 who can also play deeper and wide to make him a versatile option. Ekitike completed his move in London and will now fly to Asia to link up with his new team-mates in Hong Kong. The deal takes Liverpool's spending to just shy of £300m.
