'Play with his brother': Manager spills on NRL club Payne Haas will be at in 2027

Yahoo2 days ago

Payne Haas' manager has admitted he can't see him leaving the Brisbane Broncos, and a contract clause means he might get to play with brother Klese in the near future. Reports emerged last weekend that Haas was set to test the open market on November 1 after a list of players - including his name - was sent by his management group to all 17 clubs.
But Haas' manager has since moved to clear up confusion over the situation, saying it's standard procedure to send out the list. Haas is contracted to the Broncos until the end of 2026, meaning he's free to negotiate with rival clubs as of November 1 this year.
But the front-rower's manager can't see that happening. "We have had really good discussions with the Broncos and we are all on the same page. I do believe that Payne will stay at the Broncos," Ahmad Merhi told AAP on Monday.
"At this current stage we are not striking (any deal). We are waiting until the season is over and then we will go into heavy negotiations. Payne is a Bronco. He has always been a Bronco.
"That list goes out every month. Every coach in every club will get that. Every November 1 we update our list to show who is coming off contract in the upcoming years.
"It is a refresher and reminder to clubs that these players are with us and they need to speak to us in relation to any of those players when the time is right. We are not talking to clubs about Payne and we are not having discussions with any of them."
It was also revealed on Monday that a clause in Klese Haas' contract could see the brothers united at the same club in 2027. The 23-year-old Klese signed a three-year contract extension with the Gold Coast Titans last October, but Merhi revealed there's an option for the final year that allows Klese to become a free agent.
"The only thing Payne has ever asked of me is that he would love to play with his brother. That's it," Merhi said. "That could definitely happen. Klese has got a clause in his contract in his favour.
"He has a three-year deal with the Titans but he has got until October to decide whether he wants to be there for three years or just stay until the end of next year. If he takes up that clause, then he is off contract the same time as Payne (at the end of 2026). They would love to play with each other. Any siblings are like that. I look after the May brothers and they are the same. It's a normal thing."

The Broncos appear the most likely club where the duo would play together, but that scenario might not be straightforward. Brisbane are facing a salary cap crunch, and many believe Payne could attract $2 million per season at one of the NRL expansion franchises.
"The whole purpose of that clause wasn't put in place for Payne and Klese to play together," Merhi said. "It was all about Klese's performance and how much he is getting paid. They want to play together but is it going to happen? The only way it is going to happen is if Klese is getting his correct value. He's not going to take pay cuts to play with his brother."
The brothers will face off at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night as the Broncos host the Titans. It will mark the second time they've played against each other in NRL, after Gold Coast's 36-34 win last year.

Bo Nix had a great take on expectations for the 2025 Broncos

After quarterback Bo Nix impressed in his rookie season and the Denver Broncos made the NFL playoffs for the first time since 2015 last fall, there are heightened expectations for the team going into the 2025 campaign. Broncos coach Sean Payton has pushed back on the notion of "picking up where the team left off" in 2024, noting that every year marks a fresh season with new challenges. Nix has clearly taken that message to heart. Advertisement When he was asked about expectations for the team and himself after an OTA practice last week, Nix had a perfect response. 'It's a loaded question because each year you start over," Nix said last Thursday. "Nobody really knows what anybody has. That's why you go out there and play the season. If we were all what people said we were going to be, we wouldn't play the season. We would just finish with the final standings of what they said we were going to be. So that's why you play the game. That's why you go out there and go through a full season. We're going to learn a lot from this time to the season. We're going to learn a lot once we get into the season and go. "I have a buddy on the team and we talk about it all the time — we tell each other, 'You're still a nobody, you haven't done anything yet.' We have a lot to prove, and we have a lot to go out there and do. It's people like that who keep you in check. It's teammates that have your back and continue to motivate you because he's right. I haven't done anything up until this point, and I have a lot to prove and a lot to show. Every day it's working. Every day, it's finding a way to get better. You don't want to get to Year 2 or go down the road, and all of a sudden you got stuck and didn't get any better. So that's my focus right now. It's not even worrying about what people say. Just internally, I know I have a long way to go.' Nix is going off a brilliant season in which he surpassed 4,200 yards from scrimmage and scored 34 touchdowns, but there is room for improvement, and he knows it. The QB has arguably already arrived, but the teammate telling him he hasn't accomplished anything yet is undoubtedly a strong motivation. It is true that Nix has not won a playoff game, and that will be among the QB's top goals in 2025. Advertisement The ultimate goal is obviously winning the Super Bowl, and after getting knocked out of the postseason in the first round last year, fans in Denver will hope to see the team win in the playoffs this season. Nix and the Broncos will take it one step at a time. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans. Now healthy, Talanoa Hufanga eyes Super Bowl with Broncos

Now healthy, Talanoa Hufanga eyes Super Bowl with Broncos The Denver Broncos signed veteran safety Talanoa Hufanga to a three-year, $39 million contract this spring. That could turn out to be a bargain deal for the Broncos -- if they can keep Hufanga on the field. Hufanga battled through a wrist injury last season, and he tore his ACL two years ago. The 25-year-old safety has missed 17 games over the last two seasons. 'Injury is part of the game," Hufanga said at the start of organized team activities last week. "Troy Polamalu always told me, 'It's a 100 percent injury rate regardless.' For you to go in, you have to understand what comes with it. So every injury that I've came along, I think it's just a testament to who I am and to battle through adversity through those moments. [It is] something that I've taken in and wear on my sleeve when I go out on the field.' Now healthy, Hufanga will look to bounce back with a fresh start in Denver. He will be joining Vance Joseph's defense which ranked among the NFL's best in 2024. "I just want to go out there and celebrate with the guys," Hufanga said. "When we can make plays together — if I can help a guy get an interception, that's my goal." In four seasons with the 49ers, Hufanga reached three NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl. Entering his fifth year in the NFL, Hufanga now aims to get over the hump and win a title with the Broncos. "I want to be out there to help guys get accolades and help as a team get the biggest accolade of all, and that's being a Super Bowl champion," he said. "We have to go out there and strive to be that every day.' Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.
