Arms licences for people only after strict evaluation: Himanta
Himanta Biswa Sarma
on Sunday said it would only be granted following thorough evaluation and verification processes.
Speaking to reporters on the side-line of a campaign in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) region, Sarma emphasised the need to secure both land rights and arms licences for indigenous communities. He argued that in areas like South Salmara-Mankachar and Bagbar — where indigenous communities are surrounded by larger populations — access to arms is essential for their safety.
The state cabinet's decision, announced on May 28, aims to provide a sense of security among residents of "vulnerable and remote" areas, which include districts like Dhubri, Morigaon, Barpeta, Nagaon, and South Salmara-Mankachar, as well as localities such as Rupahi, Dhing, and Jonia.
These areas are predominantly inhabited by Bengali-speaking Muslims, leading to accusations from the opposition that the policy is intended to polarise communities and could threaten the state's peace.
Addressing potential eviction drives in the BTC region, Sarma clarified that no such action would be taken until land ownership documents are issued to indigenous residents. He also expressed concern over demographic changes in the region, suggesting that the increasing influence of a particular community could undermine the political power of the Bodos and other indigenous groups.

39-year-old voter's name appears six times in Palghar
PUNE: A 39-year-old voter's name was found appearing six times in the electoral roll of Maharashtra's Palghar district, prompting collector Indu Jakhar to order a probe. The name appeared five times in one polling booth and once in another booth in the same assembly constituency. The duplication, flagged by activists on social media, led the state chief electoral officer to alert the collector. The CEO's office convened a special meeting and sought detailed information on the process undertaken to resolve the issue. "We have sought a report at the earliest," said a senior official of the CEO's office. Jakhar told TOI that the process to delete the duplicate entries was under way. Deputy election officer Tejas Chavan explained the circumstances that led to the duplication. In Nalasopara constituency in the same district, the voter filed form No. 6 online in Jan 2024 to get her name registered. "Believing that the EPIC would be issued immediately after submission of the form, she inadvertently submitted it six times," he said. The district administration issued a statement, saying: "The district election officer and district collector, Palghar, have directed all agencies to carry out strict checks and eliminate duplicate entries in the upcoming voter list revision programme." Activists on social media said the case "comes amid Rahul Gandhi's allegations" and "fuels concerns over integrity of electoral rolls" ahead of local body polls in Maharashtra.

India acts minimally, Pakistan rarely acts against rights abuses: US
WASHINGTON: The US government noted abuses in India and Pakistan in a shortened human rights report released on Tuesday that said India "took minimal credible steps" to combat the abuses while Pakistan "rarely took credible steps. " The Trump administration scaled back the annual US govt report on human rights worldwide, dramatically softening criticism of some allies and countries that have been President Donald Trump's partners. The State Department human rights documentation for India and Pakistan was also much shorter and scaled back this year. India has been an important US partner in recent years in Washington's effort to counter China's rise, although relations have been tense over Trump's imposition of a 50% tariff on goods from India. Pakistan is a non-NATO US ally. About India, the report said: "The govt took minimal credible steps or action to identify and punish officials who committed human rights abuses." On Pakistan, it added: "The govt rarely took credible steps to identify and punish officials who committed human rights abuses." Indian and Pakistani embassies in Washington had no immediate comment on the report released on Tuesday, which documented instances in 2024. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch fault PM Narendra Modi's govt for its treatment of minorities. They point to rising hate speeches, a religion-based citizenship law the UN calls "fundamentally discriminatory," anti-conversion legislation that challenges freedom of belief, the 2019 removal of Muslim-majority Kashmir's special status, and the demolition of properties owned by Muslims. India denied discrimination and says its policies, such as food subsidy programs and electrification drives, benefit everyone. (This is a Reuters story)
