Magesi FC announces John Maduka as new coach ahead of 2025/26 season

The Stara day ago
MAGESI FC have hired Malawian John Maduka as their new coach for the upcoming Betway Premiership 2025/26 season.
The Limpopo outfit revealed the former Royal AM coach, Maduka as their new coach on their social media platform X.
" HE'S HERE! M agesi Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of John Maduka as head coach. Welcome to the family!"
Maduka replaces Owen da Ga who could not reach an agreement with the club on the terms of a contract renewal after he saved the club from relegation.
Da Gama joined Magesi in December as a replacement for Clinton Larsen who had earned the club promotion and even led them to winning the Carling Knockout, courtesy of a shock 2-1 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns.
Larsen and the club parted ways as the Magesi struggled for good results in the league campaign.
Under Da Gama, they did not really do much better although their ability to avoid defeats at their new home of Seshsgo Stadium - they were previously using the old Peter Mokoba Stadium as their homeground - they garnered enough points to avoid the drop.
They finished in 13th place to retain their elite league status.
Now Maduka, the former Malawian international who was in charge of Royal AM, takes over the baton and expectations from Dikwena.
His mandate will be that he helps the team end much higher than the precarious 13th place.
Maduka was with Royal AM whose season ended prematurely due to club owner Shaun Mkhize's troubles with the South African Revenue Services.
He previously coached Bloemfomtein Celtic.
Details of his contract will be revealed at the press conference coming up in the afternoon.

The PSL must vet new club owners carefully to avoid another Royal AM dilemma

Royal AM As the Premier Soccer League braces for a seismic shift in franchise ownership, it must vet new club owners carefully to avoid another Royal AM dilemma. The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is on the verge of entering a new chapter, as the winds of change are poised to sweep through the corridors of franchise ownership in South African football. This impending evolution not only heralds significant shifts within the league but also raises questions about the future direction and competitiveness of SA football. However, with the spectre of Royal AM's tumultuous tenure looming large, the league must approach this critical juncture with caution and diligence. The fiasco surrounding Royal AM serves as a stark reminder of the potential pitfalls that can arise when ownership is not adequately scrutinised. Royal AM's journey in the PSL was marred by financial mismanagement and allegations of irregularities, ultimately culminating in their expulsion from the league. This incident has raised pressing questions about the criteria that should govern the acquisition of football clubs within South Africa. As new stakeholders show interest in entering the league, the PSL must ensure that rigorous vetting processes are implemented, effectively safeguarding the future of the teams and the competition. The league's foremost responsibility is to ensure potential owners possess not only the financial capability to sustain club operations but also a robust and unblemished business background. With many clubs heavily relying on the PSL's monthly grants to cover essential expenses such as staff and player salaries, the dependency culture should be scrutinised and curtailed. The past has shown that relying on league subsidies can lead to dire consequences for both clubs and the integrity of the competition. The PSL need owners who not only understand the footballing landscape but also bring in the necessary fiscal responsibility to ensure sustainability. The underlying sentiment resonates deeply, advocating for a shift away from opportunism toward genuine investment and commitment in South African football. In light of these developments, the PSL's leadership must sharpen its focus on establishing a thorough vetting protocol. Potential owners should ideally demonstrate the ability to navigate the complexities of running a football club while nurturing a vision for growth and community engagement. In practical terms, this means conducting extensive background checks and seeking assurances of financial stability to deter those who may jeopardise the league's integrity. Critics argue that a more transparent ownership framework could enhance competitive balance, promoting a healthier ecosystem where clubs can flourish without the fear of bankruptcy or mismanagement. As excitement regarding new ownership is palpable, the PSL finds itself in a pivotal moment—one that necessitates a careful evaluation of who is entrusted with the stewardship of its franchises. Looking ahead, the PSL must learn from the past while forging a path that encourages responsible investment and development. It's not merely about filling spots within the league; it's about ensuring that every new entrant is prepared to contribute positively to South African football's overall reputation and sustainability. The PSL finds itself at a pivotal juncture, where several franchises may have a change of ownership. Failure to execute this due diligence could result in yet another controversial episode reminiscent of the turmoil witnessed with the Royal AM saga.

PSL transfer news: Lucas Ribeiro hints Brazil move, Mofokeng exit

PSL fans still have just under two months to wait until they see their favourite players grace the pitch in a season which promises to deliver fireworks. Orlando Pirates were hot on Mamelodi Sundowns' heels last season, but tapered off towards the end. This offseason, they have already brought in 10 recruits, including established PSL stars Oswin Appollis and Tshepang Moremi. Their arrivals would make the departure of Relebohile Mofokeng a lighter pill to swallow. The 20-year-old phenom has several clubs, from FC Cincinnati to Ah Ahly, vying for his services, fuelling speculation of an offseason exit; a notion further solidified by his father, who has urged the Pirates winger to flock the PSL. 'My biggest wish is to see Rele overseas in 2025/2026. I'm praying every day. I don't want to see him in the Betway Premiership again this season. I know God will answer my prayers,' Sechaba Mofokeng said. '[Whether it's in] Spain, England, Netherlands, France, Denmark, Switzerland — Rele can play. I believe that with all my heart. Take him to Barcelona? He can play. PSG? He can play. Any country. I'll be happy — but not Saudi Arabia,' he added. Mamelodi Sundowns celebrate a result. Photo: @MamelodiSundowns/OfficialPSL/Twitter Meanwhile, Lucas Ribeiro Costa would have had some nostalgia playing Brazil's Fluminense in the Club World Cup; but its Palmeiras who has is heart. Could a PSL exit be looming for the league's top goalscorer? 'You know that we, players, support the team we play for, but I have always supported Palmeiras,' said Ribeiro Costa. 'I've always been a big fan because of my father. He loves Palmeiras a lot and has always made me follow him since I was little. But we, professional players, have always loved the club we are playing for, too.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Five Players who could be up for grabs ahead of the new Betway Premiership Season

Monnapule Saleng's future is up in the air after last playing for Orlando Pirates in December. Photo: BackpagePix With the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season fast approaching, clubs across the country are looking for smart acquisitions. A handful of players have now become available for various reasons, including relegation, being out of favour, or release. The five topping that list, all with top-flight experience, could represent bargain signings for clubs seeking depth, creativity or leadership in the new campaign. 1. Monnapule Saleng (Out of favour at Orlando Pirates) Barely two seasons ago, Monnapule Saleng was tipped as one of the most dangerous wingers in the Premier Soccer League and a key Bafana Bafana prospect. Now, after falling out of favour at Orlando Pirates, the 27-year-old's future remains uncertain. With game time limited under previous coach José Riveiro and questions over his fitness under new boss Abdeslam Ouaddou, a loan or permanent move could revive his career. Few players in the league offer his pace and left-footed threat from the right wing. 2. Hashim Domingo (Following Cape Town City's relegation)
