Danish parliament speaker calls for green transition cooperation with China

The Star7 hours ago

COPENHAGEN, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Denmark and China should enhance cooperation in green technology and sustainable industries for the future, Soren Gade, Speaker of the Danish Parliament (Folketing) said on Monday.
Speaking to Xinhua at a reception hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Denmark to celebrate the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic ties, Gade expressed confidence that the two countries will further expand their green partnership, especially in light of the global push for sustainable development and green transition.
"We are very much involved in green tech, and China is as well. We will continue to cooperate on the green transition in the years to come," he said.
He said that cooperation between Denmark and China has deepened across various fields over the past 75 years.
"Denmark and China have enjoyed increasingly close cooperation in many areas. Our Minister of Foreign Affairs Lars Lokke Rasmussen just visited China last month, which demonstrates the high level of our bilateral relations," Gade said.
The parliament speaker highlighted strong existing cooperation in wind power, battery technology, and new energy vehicles, adding that these areas should remain key focuses for future collaboration. "China is always at the forefront in these areas, and I see no reason why our cooperation should not continue and deepen in the years to come," he said.
Gade noted that he had visited China many times, including during a 2014 state visit with then Danish Queen Margrethe II.
"China is a huge country with a large number of consumers. This is why many Danish companies are eager to develop in China," he said. "At the same time, China is a very friendly and welcoming place to visit."

Singapore-China ties more important than ever amid global uncertainty, says PM Wong

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on June 24. - ST photo/Yew Lun Tian BEIJING: The relationship between Singapore and China is more important than before amid global turbulence and uncertainty, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong told Chinese President Xi Jinping on June 24. 'We can work together to establish closer ties and also to cooperate in regional and multilateral platforms, to continue to strengthen multilateralism and the rules-based global order for the benefit of all countries,' Wong said at the meeting in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Wong's visit to China comes as the global order post-World War II which allowed for free trade has come under threat with the US imposition of high tariffs on goods from much of the world, especially from China. 'In the face of the current chaotic international situation, China is willing to strengthen strategic co-operation with Singapore, tighten the bonds of co-operation, and join hands to address challenges, to bring more benefits to the people of the two countries,' Xi told Wong. Both leaders last met in November 2024 in Lima, Peru, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit. Wong is on a five-day official visit to China, his first as prime minister. He told Xi that he chose China as the first country to make an introductory visit outside of South-East Asia, and this reflects the close and steadfast partnership between Singapore and China. Reiterating a point that he made when he met with Premier Li Qiang the day before on June 23, Wong told Xi that the relationship between Singapore and China is built on a deep level of mutual respect, trust and understanding. Wong said that this relationship started even before both countries established diplomatic ties 35 years ago, starting with Singapore's founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and China's leader Deng Xiaoping. 'President Xi is in a unique position, I think, to have engaged and met with all the prime ministers of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew, Goh Chok Tong, Lee Hsien Loong, and now me,' he said. Wong will meet Chairman of the National People's Congress Zhao Leji on June 24 after the meeting with Xi. With this, he would have met the top three leaders in China. Wong will then head to Tianjin to attend the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Annual Meeting of the New Champions, more commonly known as Summer Davos, and take part in a dialogue session with WEF President Borge Brende on June 25. - The Straits Times/ANN

Britain unveils 10-year industrial strategy to cut energy costs, support key sectors

LONDON: The British government on Monday unveiled a comprehensive 10-year Industrial Strategy aimed at addressing long-standing structural challenges in British industry, including high energy costs and prolonged delays in electricity grid connections, Xinhua reported. The plan includes targeted support for eight high-growth sectors such as advanced manufacturing, clean energy, and digital technology. A major feature of the strategy is the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme, which aims to reduce electricity bills by up to 25 per cent for more than 7,000 energy-intensive businesses — including those in the steel and chemicals sectors — starting in 2027. The savings will be achieved by removing several existing charges on electricity bills that currently fund renewable energy generation and backup supply systems. Complementing this initiative, the British Industry Supercharger programme will expand support for approximately 500 companies in sectors such as ceramics, glass, and aluminium. These companies currently receive a 60 per cent discount on electricity network charges, which will rise to 90 per cent from 2026 — a move expected to lower operating costs and enhance global competitiveness. To address persistent delays in connecting to the electricity grid, the government plans to launch a Connections Accelerator Service by the end of 2025. The service will coordinate with energy providers, devolved governments and local authorities to expedite grid access for major investment projects. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the strategy as "a turning point for Britain's economy and a clear break from the short-termism and sticking plasters of the past". Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves emphasised the plan's investment-friendly approach, saying it would ease business energy costs, unlock funding for advanced technologies, and support job creation. "It will boost our economy and create jobs that put more money in people's pockets," she said. The government stressed that the reforms would not result in higher taxes or household energy bills. Instead, they will be funded through adjustments to the national energy system and increased revenues from carbon pricing. Beyond energy reforms, the strategy includes sector-specific support for eight high-potential industries: advanced manufacturing, clean energy, creative industries, defence, digital and technologies, financial services, life sciences, and professional and business services. Each sector will receive tailored policy frameworks and funding packages over the next decade. While the announcement has been broadly welcomed by industry representatives, some experts and business leaders expressed concerns. Critics noted that although the electricity price reforms could improve competitiveness, they are unlikely to fully close the gap with lower industrial power costs in countries such as France and Germany. Britain's electricity prices remain closely tied to wholesale gas markets, which still account for a larger share of the country's energy mix compared to many European nations. Others questioned the government's ability to sustain long-term commitments, citing past inconsistencies in industrial policy. Several industry voices also urged faster implementation amid intensifying global competition for green investment. The government said detailed action plans for each sector will be published in phases over the coming months.
