AAI defers Halwara airport terminal inauguration; no new date announced

The long-awaited inauguration of the newly constructed civil terminal at Halwara in Ludhiana district has been postponed, officials confirmed on Thursday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was earlier scheduled to virtually inaugurate the facility on July 27. However, the event has now been deferred without any official explanation. A view of Halwara Airport in Ludhiana (HT File) Ludhiana deputy commissioner Himanshu Jain confirmed the postponement, stating, 'We have been informed by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) officials that the inauguration of the civil terminal has been postponed. No specific reason has been given for it yet.' Developed at the Indian Air Force (IAF) base at Halwara in Raikot subdivision, the civil terminal was a long-pending demand of Ludhiana residents, especially the business community, to enhance the region's air connectivity. It is a significant project that has been in the pipeline for over seven years. It was first approved by the Punjab cabinet in 2018 during the Congress-led government and has since seen multiple delays and missed deadlines. Though initially proposed as an international airport, the new terminal will begin operations with domestic flights only. As per current specifications, it is designed to handle one domestic flight at a time, with the capacity to accommodate 150 passengers during arrival and departure. The terminal will effectively serve as a replacement for Ludhiana's existing Sahnewal Airport, which currently operates a single daily flight between Ludhiana and Hindon (Ghaziabad). Once Halwara becomes operational, Sahnewal is expected to shut down. The construction of the terminal was in response to a longstanding demand by Ludhiana residents and industrialists for better air connectivity. The city, often referred to as the industrial capital of Punjab, has suffered from limited aviation infrastructure, forcing travellers to rely on faraway airports like Delhi, Chandigarh and Amritsar.

Congress Alleges Multi-Crore BMC Water Project Scam, Demands High-Level Probe

Last Updated: While Congress calls it a 'broker-driven scam' that benefits select contractors at the cost of Mumbai's taxpayers, the BMC has not yet responded to the allegations. The Mumbai Congress has levelled explosive allegations of large-scale corruption in the tender process for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) ambitious water purification projects, demanding an immediate high-level probe into what it calls a 'broker-driven scam" that benefits select contractors at the cost of Mumbai's taxpayers. The BMC has not yet responded to the allegations. Addressing a press conference at the Mumbai Congress office on Wednesday, Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant, along with city unit chief spokesperson Sureshchandra Rajhans, former corporator Mohsin Haider and spokesperson Nizamuddin Rayeen, claimed that influential brokers and vested interests are manipulating multi-crore tenders under the Mahayuti government's watch. At the centre of the controversy are the massive Bhandup Complex (2000 MLD capacity) and Panjapur (910 MLD) water purification projects. Sawant alleged that the tender process for these projects has been repeatedly altered to favour a specific contractor, blocking global competition and violating Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) and Competition Commission guidelines. Citing detailed timelines, Sawant said that the Rs 4,376 crore Bhandup project tender was first floated on October 10, 2023, with a pre-bid meeting on October 26. The tender was then extended six times before an addendum introduced a critical change — restricting eligible experience to companies with prior projects in India only. 'This was done to keep out global players and ensure only a pre-decided firm could qualify," Sawant alleged. According to Sawant, this manipulation inflated the final approved bid by nearly 30 per cent over the original estimate, causing huge losses to the municipal exchequer. Similarly, the Panjapur project tender, floated on September 24, 2024, was postponed eight times and eventually cancelled in March 2025 citing 'no response." A fresh tender was issued in April with stricter eligibility clauses again demanding only India-based experience. Sawant pointed out that this pattern raises grave doubts of a rigged process, benefiting the same contractor and technology supplier 'Veolia" repeatedly. Calling BMC offices and the Mantralaya 'dens of brokers," the Congress leaders alleged a deep nexus between contractors, officials, technology suppliers and middlemen, operating with impunity under political protection. Sawant confirmed that on July 16, the party had formally written to relevant authorities demanding a detailed investigation. He warned that unless probed immediately, Mumbai's taxpayers would continue to suffer while a corrupt contractor-broker-official nexus thrives unchecked under the Mahayuti regime. view comments First Published: July 25, 2025, 10:59 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. MP blames govt for construction standstill in coast

Mangaluru: Construction activity in Dakshina Kannada district has been severely hit due to the non-availability of red stone and sand, triggering widespread economic distress. BJP MP from the region, Capt. Brijesh Chowta, has blamed the Congress-led Karnataka government's 'gross negligence and flawed policies' for the crisis. In a statement issued at Delhi today Chowta said, 'Thousands of construction workers, transporters, and families dependent on this sector are now facing uncertainty. The root cause is the state government's failure to respond despite knowing the severity of the situation.' He accused the government of imposing heavy royalties on red stone, making basic housing unaffordable for common citizens. 'While Kerala collects minimal royalty for red stone, Karnataka's rates are exorbitant. Such anti-people policies must be revisited,' he said. The MP reminded the Congress of its manifesto promise to implement a dedicated sand mining policy for coastal Karnataka. 'Two years on, there's been no movement. Red stone and sand remain out of reach,' he said. Chowta also criticised the government's inaction in key meetings, including the District Development Council (KDP), where he claims BJP leaders and civil organisations have repeatedly flagged the issue. He warned that if the government continues to delay action, the BJP will launch an intensified statewide protest. 'Instead of obstructing supply chains, the government must act responsibly and ensure uninterrupted material availability,' Chowta said.
