Brentford analysis: Andrews faces testing times in rebuild

Yahoo20 hours ago
It has been a summer of change for Brentford, most notably in Thomas Frank and assistant Justin Cochrane being poached by London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Keith Andrews was promoted to the top job, but has had to deal with the loss of key players Bryan Mbeumo, Christian Norgaard and Mark Flekken - all sold in this transfer window.
Forward Yoane Wissa could soon be on his way too, with the Newcastle target left out of the Bees squad for the City Ground trip.
Andrews' first starting XI included debuts for keeper Caoimhin Kelleher, £17m Dutch attacking midfielder Antoni Milambo and right-back Michael Kayode, while Jordan Henderson made his Premier League return as a second-half substitute.
Former Republic of Ireland international Andrews has had to rebuild as he tries to maintain Brentford's impressive record of never having been in the relegation zone across the last four seasons.
That is a record they still maintain for now, but they are only out of the bottom three on goal difference.
All of Andrews' best-laid plans went out the window after the first meaningful attack of the match.
First, the corner was needless - captain Nathan Collins stepped in front of Kelleher and turned the ball behind, when the keeper was about to collect the ball under no pressure.
Boss Andrews, the club's former set-piece coach, could then only look on in dismay as three blue-shirted players around Chris Wood got in each others' way from the corner, allowing the New Zealander to turn home a loose ball for the opening goal.
Brentford had little in response after that.

Roma reach agreement in principle on loan deal for Aston Villa's Leon Bailey

Roma have reached an agreement in principle with Aston Villa for the loan signing of Leon Bailey. The loan fee will be around €3million (£2.6m, $3.5m) and will include an option for the Italian side, who will cover Bailey's wages in full for the duration of the deal, to sign the winger permanently for around €22m (£19m, $25.7m). Advertisement Talks had previously centred on an obligation for Bailey at the end of the season, but further discussions have resulted in Roma instead having the option to make his move permanent. Bailey will fly to the Italian capital on Monday evening ahead of undergoing his medical on Tuesday. The winger, who was not involved in Saturday's 0-0 draw against Newcastle United, has trained away from the rest of the Villa first-team squad while his future was under discussion. Bailey's father has been in Rome over recent days to negotiate the deal. Separately, Roma have made an offer worth £20m to sign Manchester United's Jadon Sancho as they look to add to their attacking options. Clubs in Turkey — including Besiktas — and the Saudi Pro League were also keen on Bailey but Roma emerged as the strongest suitor, after discussions took place over a Saudi move earlier in the window. The 28-year-old signed a new contract in February 2024, which runs until 2027. He is one of multiple players available to leave the Midlands club, including Alex Moreno, while Leander Dendoncker is close to joining Real Oviedo on a permanent deal. Bailey will become Roma's seventh summer signing and their second from the Premier League, as Brighton & Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson has joined on loan. Bailey was used increasingly sparingly last season by head coach Unai Emery, appearing in 24 top-flight games and starting only 14. He began to struggle for form towards the end of the previous campaign, when he played through injury and illness and suffered a couple of knocks that disrupted his start to 2024-25. 'Every day I am speaking with him about it (his form),' Emery said at a press conference last year. 'He is accepting my challenge to get the best of him like last year. We need him. Leon is a very specific player for us as a winger, threatening in behind.' The Jamaica international joined Villa in August 2021 for a fee in the region of £30million from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen. He has made 144 appearances for the club, recording 22 goals and 24 assists. The winger helped Unai Emery's side qualify for the Champions League in 2023-24 with a fourth-place finish in the Premier League and reached the semi-finals of the Conference League. Bailey had spells with Austrian lower-league sides Anif Jugend and Liefering and Slovak team AS Trencin before beginning his senior career with Belgian Pro League club Genk. He made 77 appearances for the team before moving to Leverkusen in January 2017. (Aston Villa FC via Getty Images) Spot the pattern. Isak not expected to attend PFA awards gala

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak is not expected to attend Tuesday night's Professional Footballers' Association's awards gala. The Sweden international has been nominated for the main award but could miss the ceremony amid ongoing uncertainty over his future at St James' Park. Isak is currently in the middle of a stand-off with Newcastle over his ambition to join Liverpool before the transfer deadline. Just over 24 hours before the awards, BBC Sport has learned Isak is yet to confirm his attendance at the function, which will be held at the Manchester Opera House, casting doubt over whether he plans to appear. Indeed, other sources have indicated that Isak – as things stand – is not planning on attending the event. Previous PFA award nominees and players selected in their respective division's teams of the year have confirmed their attendance inside the final 24 hours before the ceremony, so it remains to be seen whether Isak makes a late decision. Even this close to the gala, it is likely the PFA would welcome Isak's presence. The 25-year-old is currently not training with Eddie Howe's first team and there has been no indication of a reintegration any time soon. Attending the PFA ceremony could leave Isak in an awkward spot given the controversy over his future. A lot has changed for Isak - analysis Newcastle United reporter Ciaran Kelly "Ice cold Isak". These were the words Newcastle used to accompany the announcement that the Swede was up for the award fewer than two months ago. It was a proud moment for all parties as Isak was nominated for the prize for the first time. A lot has changed since then. Isak was once this side's poster boy, but the idea of the striker representing the club at a glitzy awards ceremony? That was always going to be in doubt. Isak remains determined to join Liverpool, continues to train away from the rest of his team-mates and was not involved in Newcastle's goalless draw at Aston Villa on the Premier League's opening weekend. Isak's absence from the team sheet was hardly a surprise but his team-mates put in a committed showing without him. It led to the away end turning on their talisman after the game. Do not be surprised if those chants get another airing when Liverpool, of all teams, come to St James' Park next week.
