Llanidloes art exhibition highlights endangered bird species
'Vanishing Wings: Art of the Endangered' at The Wild Oak Café brings together the work of 20 local artists, each inspired by the extraordinary yet vulnerable bird species that call the Cambrian Mountains home.
Melinda Fansa, from Protect Glaslyn and Hafren, said: 'This exhibition aims to draw attention to the 22 Welsh red listed birds found in the Cambrian Mountains between Dylife and Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust's (MWT) Glaslyn Nature Reserve.
"John Bimson, reserve volunteer warden and avid birder, has meticulously recorded the bird life of this area over the past 13 years.
"He has documented 95 different bird species, 22 of which are currently in decline and need our help.
"These species -including hen harriers, curlews, and cuckoos - highlight the ecological importance of the area.
"However, this vital habitat is under threat. Bute Energy is proposing a wind farm development in the area between Glaslyn Nature Reserve and the Hafren Forest.
"Concerned about the potential impact, the Wildlife Trust has urged its members to oppose the development.'
This art exhibition is both a celebration and a call to action.

Transport can be expensive whether that's air fare, petrol money or train travel. With the latter, passengers in the UK are being warning that ticket prices could rise by as much at 5.5% in the next round of price hikes. The July Retail Prices Index (RPI) figure, which is frequently used to calculate the annual rise in rail travel costs, will be revealed on Wednesday, August 20, and that could mean higher fares for passengers in England. Transport organisations have been left furious by the potential rise in next year's railway fares, which they have condemned as "outrageous". Just last year the Department for Transport confirmed costs would rise by 4.6%, but it looks like they may rise again. It wasn't employed in 2022 or 2023, but it was in 2024, when the Department for Transport confirmed costs would rise by 4.6% - one percentage point above last July's RPI figure. These alterations to fares took effect on March 2 this year. The Government has yet to announce how it will calculate next year's railway fare increase, although banking firm Investec has predicted this year's July RPI figure at 4.5%, meaning costs could leap by 5.5% in March 2026. Bruce Williamson, of campaign group Railfuture, raged there was "no justification" for the massive increase. He said: "What would be the justification for jacking up fares above inflation? There isn't any." He continued: "It's ripping off the customer, driving people off the trains and on to our congested road network, which is in no one's interest. "One would hope that there would be some efficiency savings and economies of scale that you get from having a more integrated railway. "But I strongly suspect that if there are any savings to be had, they'd be swallowed up by the Treasury and not passed back to passengers, which I think is wrong." Around 45% of fares across Britain's railway network are regulated by either Westminster or the Scottish and Welsh governments. This encompasses season tickets for most commuter routes, certain off-peak return fares and flexible tickets for journeys around major urban areas. Railway operators determine increases for unregulated fares, though these are expected to closely mirror changes in regulated ticket costs. Ben Plowden, chief executive of Campaign for Better Transport, argued that costly fares were "putting people off" using trains. He continued: "Rising fares are not just burdening passengers, they are putting people off rail travel. "Our survey found that 71% of people would be more likely to take the train if fares were cheaper. Public support for nationalisation plummets if fares continue to rise. "As the Government progresses plans for Great British Railways, it must take the opportunity to reform fares and make rail travel more affordable." An open return ticket from Cardiff Central to Edinburgh will set you back a whopping £239.50 (with a booking fee) if you buy the ticket in advance on Trainline. However, you can find return flights from Cardiff airport to Edinburgh airport with Ryan Air for over half of the price at £108 on Skyscanner. The Department for Transport has confirmed that "no decision" has been made regarding fares for the upcoming year. A spokesperson stated: "The Transport Secretary has made clear her number one priority is getting the railways back to a place where people can rely on them. "No decisions have been made on next year's rail fares but our aim is that prices balance affordability for both passengers and taxpayers."

South African couple Leanne and Dan, who document their adventures on The Buddymoon YouTube channel, have traversed the length and breadth of Wales in their van, visiting locations from Cardiff to the scenic Llŷn Peninsula. Their most recent journey took them to what they described as the "head" of Wales in the north, Ynys Môn (Anglesey). In a video titled I Guess All Good Things Must Come To An End (Wales), the couple began their exploration with a visit to the village of Llanfairpwll. After snapping the obligatory photo next to the sign at Llanfairpwll, famous for its extraordinarily long name, the duo set off in pursuit of a lighthouse they had spotted on one of Leanne's Windows wallpapers. Departing from the car park at Newborough National Nature Reserve and Forest, Dan enthusiastically told viewers that they "must see" this lighthouse. A travel-vlogging couple who've been exploring the sights on offer in Wales has opened up about an "absolutely beautiful" discovery in Ynys Môn. Leanne and Dan, a South African couple who've been documenting their travels for The Buddymoon YouTube channel, have explored the breadth of the country in their van, visiting everywhere from Cardiff to the picturesque Llŷn Peninsula. Most recently, they spent time exploring what they described as the "head" of Wales in the north, Ynys Môn (Anglesey). In the video, titled ' I Guess All Good Things Must Come To An End (Wales)', Leanne and Dan started off with a visit to the village of Llanfairpwll. Once they'd taken the obligatory photo of themselves next to the sign at Llanfairpwll, known for its incredibly long name, the couple set out in search of a lighthouse they discovered on a Windows background on Leanne's laptop. Setting out from the car park at Newborough National Nature Reserve and Forest, Dan excitedly declared to the viewers that you "must see" this lighthouse. He said: "We actually found it on Leanne's wallpaper on one of her Windows wallpapers on her laptop, and I was like, 'Oh, my gosh, where is that?' And little did we know it was in Wales." As she stepped out onto the beach, Leanne said: "How beautiful is this view, though? Oh my gosh, I almost broke my back looking at the view. We have the Snowdonia mountains in the background and this beautiful bay. It's so, so flat." However, in the comment section, one person pointed out the site's close proximity to RAF Valley, the local Royal Air Force station. He spotted a sign informing him that he couldn't fly his drone in the area, leaving him slightly disappointed as he displayed some of the aerial shots of the scene that he'd discovered on the internet. Dan said: "It's just absolutely beautiful. You can see on the one side, we have the sea and on the other side, we have the sea, too. And there's actually quite a few beaches that people come here to in order to swim, but yeah, we're not doing that."
