Long-time MLB executive brings wealth of legal, executive experience to new role
WASHINGTON, June 6, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The College Sports Commission, the newly established independent body tasked with overseeing the transformative changes to college athletics following the landmark House settlement, is proud to announce the selection of Bryan Seeley as its first Chief Executive Officer. A deeply experienced legal and operational leader with a distinguished career in professional sports and public service, Seeley will lead the Commission as a new era of fairness, integrity, and opportunity begins in college athletics. Seeley will officially begin this role in the near future.
Seeley brings with him a wealth of experience handling high-profile legal and compliance matters and building teams to perform complex work in the sports industry. Most recently, Seeley served as Executive Vice President, Legal & Operations at Major League Baseball (MLB) where he served on MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred's executive leadership team, oversaw investigations into a wide range of issues including circumvention of international compensation caps, and developed and enforced rules in evolving policy areas such as legalized sports betting. Prior to joining MLB in 2014, Seeley served for eight years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Washington, D.C. where he prosecuted a wide variety of criminal activity. His collaborative leadership style and proven ability to navigate sensitive matters make him uniquely suited to guide the College Sports Commission in implementing the settlement's terms, enforcing the new rules and fostering a sustainable future for college athletics.
As the first CEO of the College Sports Commission, Seeley will build out the organization's investigative and enforcement teams and oversee all of its ongoing operations and stakeholder relationships. The College Sports Commission, under Seeley's leadership, will work to continuously educate student-athletes and schools about the new rules, how to comply with them and how to use the new technology systems (CAPS and NIL Go) that the Commission is putting in place. Seeley and his team will also be responsible for enforcement of the new rules around revenue sharing, student-athlete third-party name image and likeness (NIL) deals, and roster limits. The Commission will investigate potential rules violations, make factual determinations, issue penalties where appropriate, and participate in the neutral arbitration process set forth in the settlement as necessary.

Trendlines: The smallest markets are winning the NBA finals
Welcome to Trendlines, your weekly installment of what's trending up and what's trending down in sports. This week we're talking about the NBA Finals, and the emergence of the small market team. Think about the iconic NBA franchises: The Los Angeles Lakers, the Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls and, if you indulge me, the New York Knickerbockers. This NBA Finals features two nicknames to never win an NBA title: the Thunder and Pacers. These two teams are from not-so-iconic American cities: Oklahoma City and Indianapolis. So let's start there with a big downswing. I'm being a bit charitable here with being down 3 million. I've rounded down. Indianapolis has a little over 1 million homes in its media market. Oklahoma City has well under a million. Combined they have a little less than 2 million homes. What a change from 2024 when the Finals teams (Boston and Dallas) each have over 2 million homes in their media markets. But it's not just from last year from which we've seen a tremendous shift. Indeed, I plugged in the current media market size for every Finals team since the early 1980s. Based on the current rankings, this is the Finals with the smallest teams' media markets in at least the last 40 years. It's not just the media markets where we can see how the Pacers and Thunder are small markets. Take a look at the valuation for each franchise. Both teams are worth under $4 billion. Now, that is still a billion with a 'b', but last year the two teams were worth about $5 billion on average. The fact that we have one small market team in the Finals isn't that unusual. Both of these teams have been in the finals before. What makes this year truly unique is that we have two teams worth so little at the same time. In fact, there hasn't been an NBA Finals' with two teams in the bottom 10 in the league in terms of worth since at least the early 1990s. Small market doesn't mean unexciting. Tyrese Haliburton ridiculously clutch shooting in Game 1 proves that. What makes Haliburton's production so amazing is he was still 24 on February 1 of this year. He's one of 18 players who have suited up for these squads who were under 25 on that date. That's a record since at least the early 1980s These are young and fresh players beyond just Haliburton. Thunder's star Jalen Williams clocks in at a mere 24 years old. His teammate Chet Holmgren is 23. We're looking at squads that could be good for years to come. Dare I say that, by the time it's all done, it may be Bulls, Celtics, Knicks, Lakers… and Pacers or Thunder on the pantheon of iconic NBA teams.

Olympian Simone Biles faces fierce backlash after clash with Riley Gaines over trans athletes debate
Seven-time Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles received harsh backlash on social media after the gymnastics star sparred with former 12-time NCAA All-American swimmer Riley Gaines over the debate surrounding transgender athletes competing in girls' and women's sports. Gaines, a former University of Kentucky swimmer and current OutKick contributor and host of the "Gaines for Girls" podcast, took to X on Friday to call out the Minnesota State High School League for posting a picture of the new state champions, Champlin Park High School. The school has made headlines because its dominant performance on the way to the title game was led by junior pitcher Marissa Rothenberger, a transgender athlete competing on the team. The photo posted on X had the comments disabled. In response to Gaines' criticism of the post, Biles posted a message calling Gaines "truly sick" over her stance on trans athletes. She even launched a personal attack at Gaines. "You're truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race. Straight up sore loser," Biles said, referencing Gaines competing against former UPenn swimmer Lia Thomas at the 2022 NCAA championships. "You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports. Maybe a transgender category IN ALL sports!! But instead… You bully them… One things for sure is no one in sports is safe with you around!!!!!" The post went viral on social media, with Biles adding in another post, "bully someone your own size, which would ironically be a male." But Biles, the most decorated gymnast in history – a feat she accomplished at the Paris Olympics, faced fierce backlash for her comments on social media. Many on social media also pointed out Biles' call for open categories in all sports. In 2022, World Aquatics, the international governing body for swimming, updated its eligibility policy to effectively ban transgender athletes from competing in women's events. The following year, the organization launched and debuted an open category at the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Berlin. The organization later confirmed that upon the close of registration, no entries had been received for the open category. Biles is an 11-time Olympic medalist. She holds 30 world championship medals, including a record 23 gold. She has not responded on social media following her initial posts aimed at Gaines.
