Urban areas in Karnataka may get more rain this monsoon
BENGALURU: At a time when the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a 5% above normal rainfall this south-west monsoon across India, weather officials in Karnataka have cautioned more rain for south-interior Karnataka, especially in urban pockets like Bengaluru, owing to local weather convections.
The monsoon is likely to hit the Kerala coast on May 27, five days earlier than its normal onset date of June 1. Director of IMD-Bengaluru N Puviarasan told The New Indian Express that the long-range forecast has been issued for the entire country based on global climatology factors. Excess rainfall has been predicted over south interior Karnataka.The local effects--increasing heat islands and urbanisation— will also play a role in the amount of rainfall.
Puviarasan further said that rising temperatures also play a crucial role in influencing rainfall. Last year, the maximum temperature recorded in Bengaluru was around 36 degrees Celsius in May. This year, it is hovering around 33 degrees Celsius. At the moment, pre-monsoon showers are very good in most parts of Karnataka, but not so much in Bengaluru.

A warning of thunderstorm with lightning, wind 30 kmph-40 kmph at isolated places was underlined for Bhopal, Vidisha, Raisen, Sehore, Rajgarh, Jhabua, Dhar, Indore, Ratlam, Ujjain, Dewas, Shajapur, Agar, Jabalpur, Narsinghpur districts in the state. A possibility of rainfall or drizzle with thunderstorm, lightning at isolated places was underlined for Bhopal, Vidisha, Raisen, Sehore, Rajgarh, Narmadapuram, Betul, Harda, Burhanpur, Khandwa, Khargone, Barwani, Alirajpur, Jhabua, Dhar, Indore, Ratlam, Ujjain, Dewas, Shajapur, Agar, Anuppur, Dindori, Jabalpur, Narsinghpur, Chhindwara, Seoni, Mandla, Balaghat and Pandhurna dists. A dry weather would prevail over remaining dists in the state. In the weather outlook the Met department forecasts a gradual increase in temperature by 2-3 degrees Celsius in the next four days.

Heat wave revives, pre-monsoon activity likely to start by June 15
1 2 Jaipur: Heat wave revived in the state Saturday when majority of places witnessed a rise of almost five degrees Celsius in their minimum and maximum temperatures. Jaisalmer remained hottest in the state where a maximum temperature of 45.3 degrees Celsius was recorded. The Met office said heat wave is likely to aggravate in the coming days. The Jaipur Met office said that pre-monsoon activity is likely to start in the state by June 15 and the monsoon is likely to enter Rajasthan by June 20. The heat wave also affected drinking water supply in many villages in districts, including Jaisalmer, Barmer, Dausa, Karauli, Sawai Madhopur, Churu and Bikaner. People in Jaipur witnessed a comparatively warmer morning after almost a week when a minimum temperature of 28.2 degrees Celsius was recorded. In the afternoon, a maximum temperature of 41.8 degrees Celsius was recorded. The revival of the heat wave affected drinking water supply in many areas in Jhotwara, Khirni Phatak, Bhankrota, Murlipura, Shastri Nagar, Jawahar Nagar, and Jhalana Dungari. In many places, residents are booking water tankers which are charging Rs 500 to Rs 800 per tanker.

Air quality declines to poor, GRAP stage 1 restrictions implemented
New Delhi: Delhi's air quality deteriorated to the 'poor' category on Saturday with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 209, forcing Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to invoke stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan in Delhi-NCR. The AQI was 161 in the 'moderate' category a day earlier. The measures under stage I are preventive and focus on the stringent enforcement of existing guidelines. It has been implemented in Delhi-NCR for the seventh time this year. GRAP's stage I was in force for the entire winter season (2024-25), with the CAQM lifting it finally on March 3. However, it was again enforced in NCR from March 7 to March 15, followed by the periods from March 24 to 29; from April 2 to May 1; from May 16 to 18 and May 21 to 23. After the rain spell has been over, the air quality deteriorated in the absence of strong winds blowing in the city. Experts said ground-level ozone is one of the lead pollutants now. "The AQI of Delhi has shown an increasing trend. Further, the forecast by IMD/IITM also predicts AQI to mainly remain in the 'poor' category in the coming days.
