Bengaluru records highest-ever rainfall for May

Bengaluru has recorded its highest-ever rainfall for the month of May, the Deccan Herald reported on Monday. As of 6 am on May 26, the city received 307.9 mm rainfall, the India Meteorological Department said. The previous record for May was set in 2023, when Bengaluru received 305.4 mm of rain, The New Indian Express reported. In May 2024, the city received 181.5 mm of rainfall and 270.2 mm in May 2022. During this year's pre-monsoon season, which began on March 1, Bengaluru Urban recorded 340.6 mm of rainfall, which was 155 mm above normal, the Deccan Herald reported. The southwest monsoon arrived in Karnataka on May 24, nearly 10 days ahead of schedule. It reached Kerala on the same day. Bengaluru city will experience more rain in the coming days, N Puviarasan, the director-in-charge of the India Meteorological Department in Bengaluru, told The New Indian Express. The weather agency has issued a five-day red alert for southern interior areas of Karnataka, including Bengaluru, till Tuesday. An orange alert will remain in effect until the end of the month. A red alert requires authorities to 'take action', while an orange alert requires them to 'be prepared' for extreme weather events. On Monday, Bengaluru recorded a maximum temperature of 26.7 degrees Celsius, which was 5.3 degrees below the normal of 32 degrees Celsius. Heavy rainfall and lower-than-normal temperatures have led to a spike in viral infections, especially respiratory illnesses, The Times of India reported. 'We're seeing an increase in upper respiratory tract infections, especially the common cold, cough and flu-like illnesses,' the newspaper quoted Darshana Reddy, senior consultant in internal medicine at the city's Altius Hospital as saying. 'The sudden weather shift and rise in humidity are creating the perfect recipe for viruses to thrive and spread.' Meanwhile, Mumbai has also recorded its highest rainfall for May in 107 years. The India Meteorological Department's Colaba observatory in South Mumbai has logged 295 mm of rainfall so far this month, surpassing the previous high of 279.4 mm recorded in May 1918.

307.9mm Bengaluru records wettest May ever

BENGALURU: While Bengalurueans are reminiscing about the city's weather, a record has been set. The city this year has recorded its highest cumulative rainfall for May. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru city recorded 307.9mm of rain between May 1 and May 26 (up to 11.30 am). With this, the city has beaten the all-time high record rainfall for the month of May set in 2023, when the city received 305.4 mm of rain. 'With the onset of monsoon, Bengaluru city will experience more rain in the coming days,' IMD Bengaluru, director-in-charge, N Puviarasan told The New Indian Express. According to IMD, the city recorded a cumulative rainfall of 181.5 mm in May 2024. In May 2022, the figure was 270.2 mm. Up to 5.30 pm on Monday, Bengaluru city recorded 5 mm of rain. While HAL Airport saw 3.6 mm, Kempegowda International Airport weather station recorded 0.4 mm. Bengaluru also recorded a 5.3 degrees Celsius dip in maximum temperature on Monday. The city recorded a maximum of 26.7 degrees Celsius as against the normal 32 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon has covered all of Karnataka except Bidar on May 26. The monsoon entered Kerala and Karnataka simultaneously on May 24. 'Caution and warnings were also issued to State Government agencies a week in advance about the heavy rain forecast,' Puviarasan added. Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a red alert for coastal Karnataka and the Western Ghats region, an orange alert for north interior Karnataka, and a yellow alert for south interior Karnataka for the next 4-5 days. The IMD has also issued a strong wind alert, Puviarasan said, while ghat regions along with Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga, Kodagu, Mysuru, and surrounding areas will experience strong winds at a speed of 50-60 kmph. The rest of Karnataka will experience strong winds of 40-50 kmph. He also cautioned that along with sustained continuous rainfall, most parts of Karnataka will experience heavy short-duration rain spurts.

Urban areas in Karnataka may get more rain this monsoon

BENGALURU: At a time when the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a 5% above normal rainfall this south-west monsoon across India, weather officials in Karnataka have cautioned more rain for south-interior Karnataka, especially in urban pockets like Bengaluru, owing to local weather convections. The monsoon is likely to hit the Kerala coast on May 27, five days earlier than its normal onset date of June 1. Director of IMD-Bengaluru N Puviarasan told The New Indian Express that the long-range forecast has been issued for the entire country based on global climatology factors. Excess rainfall has been predicted over south interior local effects--increasing heat islands and urbanisation— will also play a role in the amount of rainfall. Puviarasan further said that rising temperatures also play a crucial role in influencing rainfall. Last year, the maximum temperature recorded in Bengaluru was around 36 degrees Celsius in May. This year, it is hovering around 33 degrees Celsius. At the moment, pre-monsoon showers are very good in most parts of Karnataka, but not so much in Bengaluru.
