Long Island Nets Trade for Jordan Schakel, Give Up Kendall Brown
The trade appears to be a way for the Nets to get some value for Brown who was waived by Brooklyn last season after an injury prevented him from playing for the NBA club as a two-way. Brown played for the Celtics in the Summer League and could be destined for an Exhibit 10 deal there. Exhibit 10s can be converted to either two-ways or G League roster spots but before that, the Celtics would have acquire his G League rights which were still owned by the Nets. There's also a question about whether Schakel, 27, will actually play for Long Island. He recently signed a contract overseas.
Brown was an integral part of the Nets' offense for the better part of last season. Before his two-way deal and call-up with the Brooklyn Nets, Brown had become one of Long Island's 'hidden gems.' He averaged 16.4 points and had shooting splits of 57/41/75. A quick guard, Brown also made his presence felt by stealing the ball.
'Just coming in and being a guy that's consistent,' Brown told NetsDaily earlier in the season when asked what it's like to be Long Island's 'hidden gem.' 'Doing whatever I need to do to help the team win, and just being aggressive at the rim and just using my best abilities to score and make my teammates better, so that's where I can help.'
The Long Island team acquired the rights to Schakel from the Maine Celtics. Schakel started his professional career in 2021. After going undrafted in 2021, Schakel joined the Golden State Warriors for the 2021 NBA Summer League and later played for Sacramento Kings Summer League squad and the Washington Wizards on a two-way deal with Capital City Go-Go before joining Maine.
In college, Schakel took over the Mountain West Conference. He ranks third all-time in San Diego State history in career three-point field goals made with 225. He also holds the record for career free-throw percentage with 87%.
The deal however may wind up being a paper transaction, at least in the short term. Schakel recently signed for next season in the Belgian League with Filou Oostende.
The G League training camp opens at the end of October and opening night at Nassau Coliseum for Long Island is November 7. With five first round picks and a number of other young players expected to make the trek from Brooklyn to Long Island on a regular basis, the G League Nets should generate more interest than in a normal year.
