Boys' soccer Top 10: Herndon closes at No. 1 after state title

Washington Post6 hours ago

Herndon started the spring as the No. 5 team in The Washington Post's boys' soccer rankings before a frustrating 4-4 start had the Hornets searching for answers.
Slowly but surely, a team that had graduated 12 seniors from last year's state semifinal squad found what it was looking for. A tactical tweak and a mental shift put the Hornets in a better place, and they only grew in confidence as positive results started to pour in.

Shohei Ohtani's former interpreter reports to prison for stealing nearly $17 million

The former interpreter of Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani, Ippei Mizuhara, reported to federal prison in Pennsylvania on Monday, Mizuhara's attorney Michael Freedman confirmed to Fox News Digital. Mizuhara was sentenced to 57 months in prison for stealing nearly $17 million from Ohtani to pay off gambling debts. Federal prosecutors asked for a 57-month prison sentence while also asking Mizuhara to pay $16.9 million of restitution to Ohtani and another $1.1 million to the IRS. The Dodgers fired Mizuhara in March 2024. Federal investigators filed a complaint against Mizuhara on April 11. One day later, he turned himself in to law enforcement, the Department of Justice confirmed. Mizuhara pleaded guilty to bank fraud and filing a false tax return in June 2024, admitting that he placed about 19,000 bets with the bookie over a two-year period and accumulated over $40 million in debt. Ohtani publicly addressed the gambling scandal in late March, saying he had never placed a sports bet and that Mizuhara's story about paying off his $4.5 million gambling debt was fabricated. Mizuhara was initially ordered to report to prison in March, but a federal judge granted a delay. No reason for the delay has been disclosed. No-hit loss won't erase the lifetime memories made by Murray State during its improbable run

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The stands at Charles Schwab Field were emptying, and Murray State players wanted to savor their program's first College World Series as long as they could. Never mind the Racers had just been no-hit by Arkansas' Gage Wood in a 3-0 loss that will send them home to southwestern Kentucky on Tuesday. Some of the players filled jars with infield dirt, a keepsake from their improbable journey to the city where every college baseball team wants to be in June. Some milled about with family and friends. 'One of my wife's favorite movies is 'A League of Their Own,' and they said there's no crying in baseball,' an emotional coach Dan Skirka said to open his postgame news conference with 9-year-old son Keegan on his knee. 'Well, throw that out the window. There's no way I'm making it through this right here.' The Racers were the first Missouri Valley Conference team to make the CWS since 2003 and only the fourth No. 4 regional seed to get to Omaha since the NCAA Tournament went to its current format in 1999. They swept conference regular-season and tournament championships, beat No. 10 national seed Mississippi of the SEC twice on its home field and Georgia Tech of the ACC once en route to a regional title. Then the Racers went to Duke of the ACC for super regionals and lost the opener before winning two straight to punch their ticket to Omaha. Murray State overcame early jitters in its CWS opener against UCLA, falling behind 6-0, and lost 6-4. As for their game against Arkansas, the Racers just happened to run into a pitcher who threw one of the greatest games in college baseball history — a no-hitter with 19 strikeouts, a record in a nine-inning CWS game and tied for most by a Division I pitcher this season. 'We never lost faith. Haven't all year. We're not about to start now,' third baseman Carson Garner said. 'About halfway through the game, I think we realized that, 'Hey, this guy's, he's dealing, he's throwing a perfect game.' ' Murray State finished 44-17 to set a program record for wins, ending the season with only its second shutout loss. 'The wins are phenomenal. We had a lot of them,' said Jonathan Hogart, who led the Racers with 22 homers. 'You just can't match the culture we have here. I'm going to miss Coach, I'm going to miss these two (Garner and Dustin Mercer). I'm going to miss every one of these guys. Strap on the cleats to go to war with these guys was such a blessing this year, and I'll never take it for granted.' Skirka, who finished his seventh season at the Racers' coach, put together a roster made up of eight Division I transfers, 14 from junior colleges and 14 high school recruits. Skirka said no one on his team was making money from endorsements or other name, image and likeness opportunities. 'You say at the end of the year only one team's happy,' Skirka said. 'That ain't the case this year. There's definitely more than one because these guys, the run they went on, you're not going to be able to wipe the smile off their face for a really long time. That's what I told them. They're going to share this for ages and people are going to ask them about it for ages, and that's really the cool thing.' ___ AP college sports:

Chelsea's Enzo Maresca speaks out on ‘almost empty' stadium for Club World Cup win over LAFC

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca said the number of empty seats at his side's Club World Cup opening win against LAFC made for a 'strange environment'. The Conference League holders took on the side from MLS in the Mercedes-Benz stadium in Atlanta, a 70,000-capacity NFL stadium that attracted an attendance of 22,197. Advertisement 'It was a good match, a good performance,' Maresca told reporters after the game. 'I think the environment was a bit strange. You know, the stadium was almost empty. Not full.' To Maresca's point, the stadium was nearly empty just one hour before kick-off. Fans who purchased the most affordable tickets in the 300-level of the stadium were greeted with signs outside the ground telling them to move down to the lower bowl. The majority of the fans who did attend were in Chelsea shirts, while a small contingent of LAFC's main supporters group, the 3252, took up a few rows behind one of the goals. LAFC qualified for the Club World Cup after Mexican side Club León were expelled by FIFA in May for violating the competition's multi-ownership regulations. LAFC then defeated Liga MX giants Club América 2-1 in a play-in game on May 31 to qualify for the tournament. Mexican sides routinely sell out U.S. stadiums when they cross the border for friendlies and official tournaments. Had Club América defeated LAFC, the turnout on Monday would've likely been much different. Maresca, whose side defeated LAFC 2-0 on Monday, went on to say that he expects a better environment when Chelsea face Brazilian side Flamengo in Philadelphia. The match will be played at Lincoln Financial Field, another NFL stadium. 'We prepared for this game also thinking that the environment was a bit different,' Maresca said. 'But no doubt that the next one will be a nice one because we know that the Brazilian team, they always bring many, many fans. So we will try to be ready for the next one.' Attendance had been surprisingly positive until Monday's match in Atlanta. PSG and Atletico Madrid drew over 80,000 at the Rose Bowl on Sunday. The opening game between Inter Miami and Al Ahly at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens drew a crowd of over 60,000. Still, FIFA's expectations for the inaugural Club World Cup may have to be tempered until the knockout rounds. 'This competition will have two, three, four million fans coming to the US, but those who stay at home — wherever they are at home and whichever club they support — they will have the opportunity, again for the first time in history, to watch every game of their team or of any other team for free on TV,' said FIFA President Gianni Infantino in December. Advertisement The Athletic reported on Saturday that FIFA staff members based in Miami had urged the organization to play more games in soccer-specific MLS stadiums, which don't typically hold more than 30,000 fans. Senior FIFA officials, led by Infantino, preferred to go as big as possible, thus risking a scenario like the match in Atlanta. (Main image: Shaun Botterill – FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images)
