Big upset wins for St. Brendan basketball and True North baseball. Plus more region basketball

Miami Herald20-02-2025

True North baseball opened the season by upsetting the nation's sixth-ranked Parkland Stoneman Douglas 1-0 in Parkland.
Misael Uriepero, who walked and stole two bases, scored in the top of the first on an Angel Garcia RBI sac fly.
That's all True North needed.
Three pitchers combined on a 2-hit shutout. Winning pitcher Alan Soler went four innings, allowing no runs, one hit and three walks, while striking out six. Yancarlos Cordova pitched two-plus scoreless innings, walking three, giving up one hit and striking out two.
With no outs and a runner on second (via lead-off hit and then a wild pitch) in the seventh, True North's Matias Fischer entered the game on a 1-0 count and that runner in scoring position. En route to the save, he struck out both batters he faced, the first after falling behind 3-0. On the second strikeout, catcher Garcia threw out the base runner trying to steal third to end it on the Titans' third double play.
In the bottom of the first inning with the bases loaded and one out, Fischer snagged a ground ball to start a 6-4-3 double play. In the bottom of the fifth inning with one out, Douglas tried a squeeze bunt, but first baseman Mikey Cuenca made a diving catch and then threw out the runner trying to return to third base.
For Douglas (1-1), starter Chase Wildrout went three innings, allowing one run, two hits and two walks with three strikeouts. In relief, Daniel Tartaglia pitched four shutout innings, while giving up one hit and one walk and striking out four.
Later in the week, the host True North JV baseball team played Douglas JV twice and beat the Eagles both times in walk-off fashion (6-5 and 2-1).
Region basketball
What a win for St. Brendan boys' basketball in a Region 4-4A semifinal.
St. Brendan was behind 63-52 with five minutes remaining and then went on an 18-6 run to win in come-from-behind fashion 70-69 over host and top-seeded Miami Northwestern.
Trailing 69-68 with 40 seconds to play, St. Brendan made a pivotal play on defense. Senior Javi Jimenez and sophomore Sebastian Martinez applied pressure defense, which forced a pass toward the middle. That's where senior Jonas Duque batted the pass away, which senior Benny Fragela retrieved for a key steal.
Fragela passed to Duque, who dribbled up court, drove the lane and scored what proved to be the winning shot with about 15 seconds remaining.
Down by one, Northwestern still had time and drove the lane, too, but Martinez took a huge charge, which denied an easy basket off an offensive rebound, leading to a St. Brendan win and mid-court celebration. With the upset victory, it marks the first time the Sabres reached a region final in boys' basketball.

St. Thomas' Duque, Western's O'Brien are the Broward Flag Football Coaches of the Year

At Western, James O'Brien has seen the Wildcats become a consistent state title contender in flag football for several years. At St. Thomas Aquinas, Derek Duque has been developing the Raiders into a contender as well in recent years. This season both coaches took their respective squads further than any other in Broward County as each advanced to the regional finals in their respective classifications. O'Brien and Duque are the Broward County Flag Football Co-Coaches of the Year. After a rare season in which his team exited the playoffs in the first round, O'Brien guided Western back to the regional final in Class 4A - now the largest classification with the state expanding its alignment to four classes this season. The Wildcats remained one of the state's top teams, picking up wins against several top programs including Aquinas before losing in the regional championship game to Miami Palmetto. Western once again had one of the most prolific offenses in the state led by seniors Maddison Manragh and Teetee Mortimer as well as junior TT McFadden, who combined to score 38 touchdowns and amass over 2,200 yards. While a trip to the state final four has eluded St. Thomas Aquinas, the Raiders have been on the doorstep for the past three seasons. Aquinas advanced to the regional finals in Class 3A with a 16-2 record - one of their best in school history - before losing a close game to Homestead. Duque has the program on the rise, however, and thriving despite graduating senior quarterback Sherice Newton - the Miami Herald's Player of the Year. Sophomore Aimee Colson and junior Emmi Merhi return next season to try to lead the Raiders in another bid for a state championship.

Northwestern's Tyra Cox is the Miami-Dade Girls' Track and Field Athlete of the Year

Legendary Miami Northwestern girls' track and field coach Carmen Jackson recently called senior sprinter Tyra Cox, 'The Goat.' That's high praise when you consider the extensive list of great athletes Jackson has coached over the years. One thing is for sure, Cox graduates with a firm place among the Bulls' all-time greats after a stellar senior season to cap a stellar career. Cox added two more individual state titles and a relay title to her trophy case in May and is this year's Miami Herald Girls' Track and Field Athlete of the Year for Miami-Dade County. Cox, who competed for Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna her first two years of high school, finished her career with six individual state titles overall. Not counting relay titles, Cox's state championship total ties the most ever for a Northwestern athlete. Cox, a University of Florida commit, is tied with former Northwestern stars Lizzie Harris and Twanisha Terry. Five of her state titles came while running for the Bulls. Cox won her first when she won the 400 meters as a sophomore at Chaminade-Madonna. As a junior, Cox had already won three individual state titles in the same meet, joining a feat once accomplished by another Northwestern great, former Olympian Tiffany Williams. Cox secured state titles this season in the 200 meters with a time of 22.99 seconds and in the 400 meters, where she broke a state meet record with a time of 51.44 seconds. That time is second all-time in Florida history behind only former Olympic gold medalist and Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas standout Sanya Richards-Ross' time of 50.69 seconds. Cox also helped Northwestern's 1,600-meter relay team set a new state meet record in that event with a time of 3:38.91. Cox also had the fastest time in the county at state in the 100 meters, despite finishing third, after running 11.77 seconds. But Cox ran the fastest time all season in the state in the 100 meters when she ran a time of 11.39 seconds at the Bob Hayes Invitational in March. Her performance followed a junior season in which she won all three events at state and earned Florida Dairy Farmers Miss Track and Field honors.
