Mack Hansen a serious doubt for first Lions test after missing training

Irish Examiner15-07-2025
Mack Hansen looks set to miss the British & Irish Lions' first Test against Australia this Saturday after missing training with a foot injury.
Hansen had enhanced his chances of selection on the right wing for the Series opener with the Wallabies after another impressive performance for the tourists last Saturday in Adelaide against an AUSNZ Invitational XV.
Yet he did not emerge unscathed and assistant coach Richard Wigglesworth on Tuesday confirmed the Connacht and Ireland star, along with full-back Blair Kinghorn (knee) were serious doubts for the Suncorp Stadium clash having not trained so far this week.
And with the coach saying players would not be unnecessarily risked with the second and third Tests coming in quick succession, the way appears clear for England wing Tommy Freeman to grab the Lions number 14 jersey at the weekend.
'He hurt his foot in the game, I don't think it is anything serious, but he was managed today," Wigglesworth said. "Hopefully he will be fully integrated pretty quickly.
"It is nothing that we are over concerned about but we need to make sure we have enough numbers at training but it doesn't look too serious.
"A bit like Blair, we will find out tomorrow, he didn't train fully today so we will know a bit more tomorrow.'
Yet when pressed, Wigglesworth, admitted Hansen had to be considered a serious doubt.
"A doubt is anyone who didn't train fully today, but he's definitely not ruled out.
"Every case is different. There are injuries you can play with and get on with. As a rugby player at the highest level, you're constantly doing that at this stage of the season.
You'd be surprised if you ask any of them if they're all, on both teams, feeling 100 per cent. And then there's other injuries that you can't and that would be a risk and we certainly wouldn't be taking risks with players."
The only players definitively ruled out of contention for first Test selection, publicly at least, are centre Garry Ringrose and hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie. Ireland's Ringrose experienced delayed concussion symptoms following last Wednesday's win over the Brumbies in Canberra while Cowan-Dickie, the English front-rower sustained a head injury in last Saturday's game against AUSNZ.
Both players have been stood down for 12 days, making Ringrose available for next Tuesday's final midweek match, against a First Nation & Pasifika XV at Melbourne's Marvel Stadium, while Cowan-Dickie will hope to be cleared to become available for selection for the landmark second Test at the 100,000-capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground.
'There are different stages they have,' Wigglesworth said, 'but from what I understand, there's been no issues. He's (Ringrose) not had to go back any stage from what that looks like.
'Luke was absolutely fine straight away and this is why we have such great medical staff and good procedures, but Luke's acting like Luke. He's there and he's full of beans. They're both coming through well.
'They know they were on the 12 days so there wasn't a 'could I, can't I'? It was pretty black and white.
'What the Lions tour is proving to be and is everything that you hear about, it's a squad game. There's no point you showing any of that natural disappointment that you're going to have, because that's not what we're here to do.
'We're here to create a brilliant environment and help each other, whether you're in or out, whether you're injured or not. And they've certainly done that.'

Joe Marler admitted his 'bulls*** behaviour' towards Lions call-ups wasn't right

It requires a substantial character to acknowledge when one has messed up, and former British and Irish Lion Joe Marler isn't above confessing to his blunders. In particular, the ex-England prop feels remorse for his "bulls*** behaviour" towards 'The Geography Six' during the 2017 Lions tour of New Zealand. Andy Farrell's Lions squad will wrap up their summer tour of Australia on Saturday, having already secured a series triumph by establishing a 2-0 lead. It goes without saying that matters have been considerably more peaceful than the New Zealand expedition of eight years past. That summer journey stands out for various reasons, not least because it represented the first drawn Lions series in more than six decades. Nevertheless, head coach Warren Gatland also faced criticism for selecting The Geography Six ahead of other, arguably more suitable, candidates. Scotsmen Allan Dell and Finn Russell plus Welshmen Kristian Dacey, Tomas Francis, Cory Hill and Gareth Davies were summoned to the squad to bolster the group, primarily for non-Test matches. Wales and Scotland were touring in New Zealand and Australia, respectively, meaning some of their players were favoured over other top-quality options situated further afield at the time. Marler, 35, was apparently irritated certain England colleagues, who were touring Argentina, and others were overlooked. The discontented front-rower, who hung up his boots last year, has since admitted he didn't conceal his emotions from those who received the summons. "The murmurs throughout the majority of the squad were like, 'What the f***, guys?' For me, I look back on it and I regret the way I behaved towards the six players for the majority of the time," he told guest Dan Cole on The Joe Marler Show (via Wales Online) in 2021. Marler made the admission to close friend Dan Cole on his podcast in 2021 (Image: Getty Images) "For some reason, I just went full resentment towards them as if it was their fault that they'd been called up. [Or] that when they got the call, they should have said they don't fancy it. "That's how I felt at the time, and looking back on it, I feel like that's f***ing bulls*** from me. Especially the point at which they tried subbing us off and I was like, 'F*** off.'" Marler was so furious that he point-blank refused to be taken off during a midweek win over the Hurricanes in Wellington. The Lions attempted to make their changes, but referee Romain Poite allowed play to continue when Marler declared he wasn't budging from the pitch. It's virtually unprecedented for a rugby player to defy the coaching team's instructions, regardless of whether the fixture was a Test match. Marler's reflection four years later clearly showed he recognised his mistakes. Marler made five appearances on the 2017 tour but didn't earn a Test cap (Image:) The ex-Harlequins star also revealed his thoughts on Gatland and his coaching methods. And despite the New Zealander's legendary status in certain circles, one particular scrummaging session left Marler questioning everything. "I don't think I ever got close enough to blow smoke up his a***," he added. "I found him quite an awkward character, which says a lot really because I tend to surround myself with awkward characters! "I thought he was alright. My experience was that I felt the Test team had already been picked, and it was going to be pretty hard to change a lot about that. That's just my view of it. Then I think I struggled with him when I couldn't work out this scrum drill. I couldn't work out whether he was taking the p*** out of us or whether he was being serious. "If he was taking the p*** then it's like, 'Hang on a minute, you're taking the p*** out of the midweek veg. You're not working on trying to keep the squad together.' But if he wasn't taking the p*** out of us and it was a legit drill, then it's, 'Hang on a minute, you're meant to be one of the best coaches in the world.'"

Lions v Australia live updates: Tourists look for 3-0 series win in Sydney

2 minutes ago Australia have also made changes after their fightback came up short last weekend. Taniela Tupou is back at tighthead to add some power. It will be needed given Rob Valetini, so impressive in Melbourne, is once again injured. Nic White starts at scrumhalf in his last international before retirement. Will Skelton stays in but it remains to be seen how long he'll last given he was called ashore after 47 minutes last time out. TEAM SHEET 🦘 Tune in on — Wallabies (@wallabies) 4 minutes ago Let's start with the teams, because that's all we care about as Lions onlookers, right? How many blokes from my country are involved? With Ireland, the answer is nine in the starting XV. The two changes (from an Irish perspective) are James Ryan starting at secondrow after his impressive bench cameo last week, while James Lowe is replaced on the wing by Blair Kinghorn. An emotional Son said at the start of a press conference: "Before we start the press conference, I just want to share the information that I've decided to leave the club in the summer. "And respectfully, the club is helping me with my decision. "So I just want to share this information before we start the press conference." Fan favourite Son joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in August 2015 in a deal worth £22million. He's loved every minute of his time with the club but beliveves now is the right time for a new challenge. He said: "It was the most difficult decision of my football career. I've been here ten years at a beautiful club with beautiful fans and having such amazing memories "And after all that, it was so hard to make this decision. But as I said, I feel like I need a new environment and to push myself. Most read in Football "And to get more of me, I feel like I need a little bit of change. Ten years is a lot of time when you're thinking about it." So and I came to London as a kid. 23 years old, a very young age [and] a young boy came to London who even didn't speak English. "And [I'm] leaving this club as a grown man. This is a very, very proud moment. "So I just wanna say thank you to all of the Spurs fans that gave me so much love. "I felt like it was my home. But yeah, it was, it was one of the toughest decisions I've ever made." THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY..
